I imagine bought versions of the movie on DVD still have it in, but versions aired on television probably do cut it because kids don't want it... It's usually aired at kids peak time, after all
@FowlManor Muppets Christmas Carol had some dodgy music in it (hit and miss, really), but this song wasn't one of those. I feel like we molly coddle kids these days and we don't want them to see anything sad. Bloody nonsense. I'm going to assume everyone on this video remembers Bambi - we all survived, didn't we? We haven't all got clinical depression from watching kids movies with serious moments in them.
Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my fav movies ever and I've been looking for it for ages and I finally bought it today, but mine doesn't have this song in it. Why was it cut out?
Yeah, just watched the "Anniversary Edition" today, and it didn't have this song on it either :L Considering it's a great song, the song is repeated (but a little changed) at the end, and it's part of the main theme for the film, it's really odd they cut it out...
I've watched this film every Christmas eve for 17 years and this is the first time I've seen this song! My parents were cheapskates and recorded it off the telly, then we got the dvd version. It was only tonight when I thought 'that was an odd cut...'
My VHS copy has this in it but just watched downloaded version and it was missing. Its one of the most important parts for scrooge's character, thought it was just a bad rip but surrised to here disney cut it from later verions.
I remember watching this film when i was about 4 and i used to sing this song over and over and over, its now ten years on and i now find this song so beautiful and i know what it means x
Why is this song edited out on the tv version of the film? When i was a kid I loved this song, now after watching it on tv its not in the film. Nor is it in the version I have on DVD....annoying!
@witdrwnbutalive I looked up this video because I just watched it on TV and thought there was a song missing. You mean to say it's not in the DVD either?!
@Ollievarium I have owned three versions of this, a video I bought in '95, then a dvd a few years back, and I've just purchased a Disney 50th anniversary edition and this song is now missing...I noticed it was missing in the televised version, but am very sad to see it missing from the dvd too!
@sistabliss0609 I looked it up on wikipedia. It describes why it was cut, and also which releases it was cut from. I think it said that it is included in the laser disk version. I think that means Blu ray.
@Ollievarium Thanks, I'll look that up...I shall have to buy the Blu Ray in order to appreciate it fully! I've watched it with my children every Christmas Eve since 1995, a small tradition we've never missed since my first son's first Christmas!
@Ollievarium Yeah Im afraid so, well its not on my dvd version. I have no idea why. Too sad for kids? it cant be copyright issues cos its on the end credits.
@witdrwnbutalive That happened to me to...I have the dvd and it does not have this song, which I think is really weird since in the general television here they showed it complete, with this song...and I saw it has a kid and I really loved this song... :S so...I don't see the problem...the scene on Lion King where Mufassa dies or on Tarzan where Katchkuk dies are much sadder to me, even now...and I saw them as a kid... :S so...I don't see the point of taking this from the dvd...
Ya now that the Muppet r booming the copy with this part mite be easier to find hers to hoping I thought I was going crazy watched like 4 copies and nothing lmfao
@annmark98 Disney studios cut it because they didn't feel it would appeal to a child audience.I completely disagree. When I was a child this was my favorite scene =\
silly question but on my screen settings i have wide, smart, 4/3, 14/9 and zoom. its a panasonic dvd player, which one do i put it at to get the song??? aaaah why did they cut it out silly people!!!!!
It's very ennoyin cos I used to have this film on vid wen I was little and it had that song on but now I've got it on DVD they leave it out and u would like to kno why? Is it too sad or just tryin to shorten the film and to save time too on the DVD well If I get it proper on DVD it better have that song on it cos I've got copy of the film u see so I want a proper DVD of it
@Crazyjane84 If you get the DVD that says "Kermit's 50th Anniversary" it has both versions of the film on it. The fullscreen version which includes this song, and the widescreen version which does not.
I'll admit it--when Michael Caine starts singing, the tears start coming. The Book is even sadder because the spirit takes Scrooge to see Belle married so that Scooge is forces to glimpse the life he could have had.
I spose because I've never seen this bit before (after at least 17 watches) it seems a bit forced, even though it leads into the Love We've Known song - and the "carry with us so we're never quite alone"
I think it worked better without much said - and nothing sung - because then you fill in the gaps :( but maybe that's just me.
Always udes to fast-forward this scene as a child.. Now I regard it as one of the sweetest, sadest songs in cinema.. It has an undoubted magical quality, chilling.
CamErinJohnston is right its in the full screen version! I just bought the Anniversary Edition DVD at Best Buy yesterday and watched it last night and was like, where the hell did this scene go! I switched to Full Screen and there it was :0)
For those of you wondering where this scene went on the DVD version, you need to watch it in full screen. When you watch the wide screen version, this scene is left out (it's the theatrical version which did not include the song). I did wonder why when ever they played this film at Christmas that it was missing . Just sort of thought they took it out because kids just didn't like it. But I think this sene has to be a part of the film. Because you feel a low at this point and when the ghost of Christmas present come in that hole sene is on a high that its the best part in the film and were you wanna rewide the song back and back LOL
Quite right, wastedyuthe, I checked and it was an editing thing, not copyright.
They thought the song slowed down the story, which is nuts because Scrooge rejecting the love of his life is so important to the story. Another case where the audience is underestimated.
@enjoyitbro True - but it is his indifference that drove her to reject him. Older Scrooge is staring in disbelief at his younger selfs uncaring attitude as the best thing that ever happened to him slips away. That's what I meant about regret at what he let go in his youth.
@gillianinoz Yeah, it's definitely a weird choice that they chose to delete the song. I watched the DVD version the other night...and it's so jarring not to have the song play during that scene. It's so short and feels like something is missing. And it's such a turning point in Scrooge's life. It explains why he became such a cynical and bitter old man.
@pokupokupoku Well, it is a turning point. He was already greedy and loved money more than Belle. Really, this is a symptom of his problems, not the cause.
I understand it is a copuright issue that kept this song from later releases. A real shame, it's a beautiful song with a huge emotional impact. You really see what he foolishly gave up in his youth and how he regrets it in his old age.
@gillianinoz How can it be a Copyright issue when the song is played again in the end credits? Watch all the credits at the end, and you'll hear it sung by someone else.
Love is gone alright, right out of the new DVD release! How stupid is that, just fast forward the part if you don't like it, but leave it for the people who do!
My favourite song of the movie, I was GUTTED when they cut it out of the DVD (by the way I cannot find the full version :/ or am I just being silly?). One downside is that I don't like her voice much, but the song is so beautiful that I can ignore that :)
I watch this movie every Christmas without fail, along with my father. Christmas would not be Christmas without this!
We taped this off the Disney Channel or Pay Per View or something when I was a kid, so I wasn't aware the song was ever cut (it was in our recording.)
My favorite part is when present-Scrooge walks up behind her and starts singing, because he remembers ever single, heartbreaking word.
I feel so random, all week I'm like singing this song then today I'm like 'what is that from!?!' and I remembered oh thank God for Youtube and nostalgic movie junkies like me. I'm 21 and I remember watching this movie every Christmas. Oh, and that ghost of Christmas Past flying chick used to give me the creeps ^_^
So which versions of the DVD includes the song? From what I understand the song was cut in the theatrical release (although I could have sworn it was there when I saw it as a kid) and it's absent in ONLY the widescreen versions. I can only assume it will be the full movie if it's released on Blu-Ray, but who knows at this point.
the fact that you left the intro and the scene following it with the line about these being the shadows of what have been makes you one of the most brilliant people on youtube.
@immortalwombat10 Haha, thanks! I'm a cinephile, film student/film maker, so I realize the importance of a good edit. When I posted this there weren't any other versions on YouTube, so I figured I had better do it proper.
Meredith Braun who plays Belle in Muppet Christmas Carol has just launched her official website / youtube channel and is working on her debut album! For more details follow us on twitter @stagedoorlondon
@WhiteTiger950 What is her logic? I mean just because he wants to save enough money before they are to be married, thus he wants to be financially stable to support her that means he no longer loves her? If anything it means he truly does love her. She is clearly singing about how she no longer loves him, and that in her eyes he wasn't worth the wait.
@enjoyitbro No, he is actually financially secure enough, but he loves money so much he will never be satisfied with what he has and judges it as too little to get married with. She sees he is starting to lust for money so much, he will soon love it more than her.
@enjoyitbro That may be what this abbreviated version shows. But she knows that if Scrooge really did love her, he would have kept his word, and wouldn't need to wait to be financially independent before marrying her. That's just his excuse to keep from committing to her, and to devote more attention to money. She does leave him in deed, but he left her in spirit long before. She realizes this, and decisively ends their relationship.
EVERYTHING BEFORE 2007 WAS GOOD! 90S HAD GREAT THINGS LIKE THIS MOVIE! I REALLY WANT TO GO BACK TO THE GOOD PAST AND AVOID THE BAD PRESENT AND THE BAD FUTURE.
Yeah, "The Song is Gone" is what it should be renamed, since they took it out of the dvd version. Stupid editors---most meaningful part of the movie. What were they thinking? A couple years ago, my son bought the dvd mainly to get this song, and has never watched the movie again because this scene was cut.
@Pamhamlet The dvd I have has the movie in both fullscreen and widescreen versions. The widescreen version is missing this scene but the fullscreen version DOES include it.
@SteveJ2008 So what you're saying is that your DVD has both versions on the disc? If you choose to watch it with widescreen it just won't play the song, correct?
I apologize for asking since your comment is almost a year old. I planned on picking up the movie on DVD (only have the VHS version) to watch with some friends at Christmas and would rather have the full film.
I remember watching this movie all the time as a child. I hid the VHS box under all my other movies because I was afraid the ghosts would come out and get me. I forgot that this song came from this movie. I would sing parts of it as a teenager and young adult whenever relationships were heading south, but I couldn't remember the whole thing. This song made an impact on me even when I was a child, it wasn't until I was older that I truly understood it.
@Anexilli really? thats my favorite ghost..........i still cant decide if its male or female............i think it's one of those things cant be determined right?
The audience, mostly parents with little kids, found the scene restless that's why they cut it from the movie. I always thought that it deserved to e kept in the movie.
Oh my god I love this scene SO much I am so glad I sitll have my vhs and watch it with my dad or my friends every year!! This song is goregous and the actress did a great job. I wonder what happened to her?
PS: When he is standing behind her and crying, I want to cry too. Michael Caine is amazing!
I bought my Mum this on DVD as she was so in love with her VHS copy it was wearing out, and she was so upset that this song was cut! I really miss it. I know all the words still, due to my mother singing it to me whenever it used to come on. Such a sad song.
It was cut because it wasn't in the original theatrical release: '"When Love is Gone" was cut out of the original 1992 theatrical release as producers thought it would slow the film down a bit, but put it back in for the video release and TV airings. This song was once again cut from the 10th Anniversary Edition of the film released on DVD (widescreen only, the fullscreen version has the song).' -- Wikipedia
Hey, if you get the newest DVD this song is still on the FULL SCREEN version. There are 2 on the DVD. Widescreen had this cut, FULL SCREEN has it. I watch the movie in widescreen until he visits his old job than i go back and switch it till after this song.
@meekakitty i know what you mean! i love this movie, bought it on dvd. but when i first watched it i was sure that there had been a song here and it was gone! now seeing it again i cant understand why it was cut. it is so important in understanding why he hates christmas. this seen and its sense of loss is easily the biggest influence on scrooge in shaping his life but they left it out.
@bloodypimpernel yeah i was sat watching it about 2 bdays ago and when it went to the next scene i was like "Err what do u think your playing at? get that song back in the film" to the tv haha
I had the film on VHS and it had this scene, what a shame they decided to cut it from the DVD.
I loved the song when I was little but I remember her face being annoying. Just watched the video, and it still is haha. I think its the way she sings :/
Just beautiful! I love this piece. I have the movie on vhs and its in but the dvd hasn't! Utterly terrible to cut such a beautiful track!

I dont remember this scene at all? is it in all of the movie versions? (I've watched the swedish when I was a kid) ?? anyone know??
MimmlishxXx 4 months ago
We taped this off the Disney Channel or Pay Per View or something when I was a kid, so I wasn't aware the song was ever cut (it was in our recording.)
My favorite part is when present-Scrooge walks up behind her and starts singing, because he remembers ever single, heartbreaking word.
TheCleverArachnid 4 months ago
I feel so random, all week I'm like singing this song then today I'm like 'what is that from!?!' and I remembered oh thank God for Youtube and nostalgic movie junkies like me. I'm 21 and I remember watching this movie every Christmas. Oh, and that ghost of Christmas Past flying chick used to give me the creeps ^_^

When I was a kid, I'd always fast forward past this scene. S:

noescapes08 1 month ago
So which versions of the DVD includes the song? From what I understand the song was cut in the theatrical release (although I could have sworn it was there when I saw it as a kid) and it's absent in ONLY the widescreen versions. I can only assume it will be the full movie if it's released on Blu-Ray, but who knows at this point.
FreakinSweet1987 4 months ago
the fact that you left the intro and the scene following it with the line about these being the shadows of what have been makes you one of the most brilliant people on youtube.
immortalwombat10 5 months ago 23
@immortalwombat10 Haha, thanks! I'm a cinephile, film student/film maker, so I realize the importance of a good edit. When I posted this there weren't any other versions on YouTube, so I figured I had better do it proper.

To sing a song about how you no longer love your fiance on christmas eve seems pretty cold dont you think?
enjoyitbro 7 months ago
@enjoyitbro Actually I think she's singing that he no longer truly loves her
WhiteTiger950 7 months ago
@WhiteTiger950 What is her logic? I mean just because he wants to save enough money before they are to be married, thus he wants to be financially stable to support her that means he no longer loves her? If anything it means he truly does love her. She is clearly singing about how she no longer loves him, and that in her eyes he wasn't worth the wait.
enjoyitbro 2 months ago
@enjoyitbro No, he is actually financially secure enough, but he loves money so much he will never be satisfied with what he has and judges it as too little to get married with. She sees he is starting to lust for money so much, he will soon love it more than her.
fortheepicwinful 2 months ago
@enjoyitbro That may be what this abbreviated version shows. But she knows that if Scrooge really did love her, he would have kept his word, and wouldn't need to wait to be financially independent before marrying her. That's just his excuse to keep from committing to her, and to devote more attention to money. She does leave him in deed, but he left her in spirit long before. She realizes this, and decisively ends their relationship.

Maybe it's the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, but I just cannot see this film in anything but a positive light.

I knew that Belle did a song! Watched it on dvd AND on UK tv recently and it was cut from both versions. I thought I had imagined this song
JJB18 1 year ago
Yeah, "The Song is Gone" is what it should be renamed, since they took it out of the dvd version. Stupid editors---most meaningful part of the movie. What were they thinking? A couple years ago, my son bought the dvd mainly to get this song, and has never watched the movie again because this scene was cut.
Pamhamlet 1 year ago
@Pamhamlet The dvd I have has the movie in both fullscreen and widescreen versions. The widescreen version is missing this scene but the fullscreen version DOES include it.
SteveJ2008 1 year ago 19
@SteveJ2008 So what you're saying is that your DVD has both versions on the disc? If you choose to watch it with widescreen it just won't play the song, correct?
I apologize for asking since your comment is almost a year old. I planned on picking up the movie on DVD (only have the VHS version) to watch with some friends at Christmas and would rather have the full film.
FreakinSweet1987 4 months ago
@SteveJ2008 So they do include it on one of the versions then?
Bless you!! You just made my night. :) I was depressed they'd cut this scene and that (with my VCR now broken) I'd have to buy the dvd.

The audience, mostly parents with little kids, found the scene restless that's why they cut it from the movie. I always thought that it deserved to e kept in the movie.

I bought my Mum this on DVD as she was so in love with her VHS copy it was wearing out, and she was so upset that this song was cut! I really miss it. I know all the words still, due to my mother singing it to me whenever it used to come on. Such a sad song.
shambles07 1 year ago

OsskaSchindla 1 year ago 3
outrage. I can't believe they cut this song out, it seems so important in realizing why he is the way he is.
meekakitty 1 year ago 4
@meekakitty i know what you mean! i love this movie, bought it on dvd. but when i first watched it i was sure that there had been a song here and it was gone! now seeing it again i cant understand why it was cut. it is so important in understanding why he hates christmas. this seen and its sense of loss is easily the biggest influence on scrooge in shaping his life but they left it out.
