I'm going to break the long chain of comments about music's life-fullness, with an experience brought on by this song. Is it just me (I know Johnny is dead and lives on through his soul and music.) but when Johnny appears on the video in the black suit towards the end. It felt like he might have recorded this yesterday, or even just an hour ago. Personally I am amazed at that type of beauty in work.
This song reminds me of the neighborhood 'hobo' Stinky Joe. We didn't call him that. Its what he introduced himself as. Now SJ was really good at math.Really REALLY good at math. But instead of following his passion he chose what he called "the simple life." Playing on his old beat up guitar and helping kids with their homework. One day my Daddy went to go give SJ some supper and found him laying there dead with a big smile. RIP Stinky. The whole neighborhood was at your funeral. So was Mr.Cash.

I am seriously starting to get really pissed off seeing these kinds of comments... first, I'll say that music has not died, and never will... yes, nowadays we are surrounded by a lot of horrible musicians that use auto-tune and all that shit... I won't deny that... But music has not died... there are still plenty, a LOT of good bands, musicians, etc...
Hell, maybe it has for YOU, but I guess I think different from everyone else... who knows?
@fcoutts14 you make a valid point and i have to agree that there are a lot of great artists and musicians out there, but it's very hard to find the good ones. all the great artists and famous people have either lost their touch, or gone with the new generation which is downright horrible.
sure, everyone has their own taste and is entitled to have them, but can't we stick to the old times where songs were meant to tell a story or to entertain rather than to get you moving or make you crazy?
Could you help me to come true this fabulous dream? PLEASE, my dream is to be a singer I know that Im not a professional singer but I do my best and if you give me the opportunity I know that I can be that singer that im dreaming please stop by my channel “Anlimema” and check out my acapella. you have no idea how much I appreciate your support, it means the world to me.
Who the fuck cares how old you are? Good for you. You're 5 years old and like the same music that millions of other people around the world like. Congratulations.
I've always felt I was born "before my time" as crazy as that might sound but, I've always had a taste for old music and this is a great example... the story line is a bit crazy but it gives you a sence of "feeling" as in back when music had meaning... Love this song. :)
@edsonayala1 god, im 13 and feel the same way. Much rather be living in 1960's or 50's than friggin 2011 with "the bieb" god..... According to my grandmother(shes 94) times are so bad (gang related stuff) its too easy. It might not make much sense but i think it means people look for a job where they can kick there feet up and rest.
As much as I love Johnny Cash, I am still partial to Guy Clark's version, the man that wrote the song and makes a cameo in this video (he is seen sweeping the floor).
Johhny Cash once honnored Guy Clark saying: "If I could only write a song like Guy Clark..."
@edsonayala1 ...What? That doesn't mean /anything/. Music is beautiful. And every person is spoken to differently by music. It is lovely that you enjoy Johnny Cash- but to discount the music of today as being 'feelingless' simply means you aren't listening hard enough. I could name a number of bands with amazing music who are still creating as I write this. I /hate/ this type of post. (And also the ones with 'I'm this age and I like this.) Its going in the right direction, but its still silly.
I love Guy's version of this song. Johnny does a great job, but I keep wishing it was Guy's voice singing it. Sometimes I think it's the first version of a song you hear that you prefer. Since I heard Guy do this first, everyone else's version has to live up to his.
I grew up with oldies right now because i can not stand the new stuff we need to get country back to its roots because bieber is not music johnny is music conway is music willie is music hank is music wayling is music
A truely great song, I loved it when I heard it 25 years ago, but to me the real surprise was the appearance of Waylon alongside with Jonnie Cash. Lord, let them feel good in Heaven, they did so much good down here on Earth!
Why cant we grow up with music like this today? When in utah at rubys in it made me feel at home no justin bieber was playing no lady gaga johnny cash. it was amazing.
This cover is amazing !!! And Johnny's personal "touch" .... words cannot describe it !!! I am not an American, but I am trully happy that America had such a great man !!! Hang on to such real values ....

Guy Clark gives you a complete short story in less than 4 minutes in this country classic. Incidentally, Guy Clark appears at about the 2:50 mark as the fellow smoking a cigarette and sweeping the floor as Johnny Cash is going through the personal effects of the deceased. Of course the song's hard luck loser is played by Waylon Jennings.

1900 music got a good kick-start
1930 music got a soul
1950 music couldn't GET any better
1972 music tastes changed, but still pretty good
1981 music got strange and ill
1994 music got weirder and sicker.
2007 music died
2011 music is ever rotting in his grave.
a few good artists, however are timeless.
Johny Cash ascends even those artists.
AnonymousVoid 8 months ago 35
