  • has anyone heard glen campbell's version?

if youdo hear it, try and post it on youtube.

    PLEASE!

  • Thank you for this!

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! This may be a demo, but Art Garfinkle later covered this song on one of his 70's solo albums ("Angel Clare"). My favorite folk song of all time. THANKS so much for posting this delightful "blast from the past" !!!

  • So nice version!

  • Dudes. It IS the Everly Brothers!

  • Comment removed

  • is this the most covered traditional English folk song ever ????/

  • @fredtosspot69 - DEAR FRED: Is barbara allen an english song or a scottish one?

whichever, it IS beautiful. simon and garunkel sing it well but have you heard art garfunkel's solo version from h is ANGEL CARE album? it is nicer!

    FEB-17-2012.

  • I have loved this song for years sooooo glad you posed it thank you!!! <3

  • I was named for this song Barbara Ellen

  • They sound kinda like Mr. Bob Dylan kinda. Love Paul and Art.

  • This is a very exact rendition of the Everly Brothers version. This recording really outlines the depth to which S&G were Everly acolytes. Beautiful tune, perfect for their harmonies.

  • @monkeypoks They do sound exactly like the Everlys here. That's a compliment!

  • get stuffed, the lot of you!!! you cannot dissect a good song, no matter who performs it.

  • I can hear these two sing all day!

  • Absolute copy of the Everly Brothers Version on "Songs our Daddy Taught Us" - word for word, harmony for harmony - well i guess a total copy is a tribute.

  • Art Garfunkel's solo version of this is much much better by far!!!!

  • What a beautiful version of this song. The Everly Brothers had a similar version which I haven't heard in years...wish I could find that one again/

  • it's cool. i love this song.

    P.S.

    i hate people. people suck.

  • i like it. i like old versions becuase re-mixs suck

  • That was beautiful, sophisticated and not at all unfinished, we just got lucky they made the demo. thanks for posting this

  • @jimjoyce25 he is a sexy man actually XD

  • x) didn't simon write bridge over troubled waters! Man S&G sure are great :)

  • Simon and Garfunkel slaughtered this song as did Bob Dylan...they are both talented performers as well as topnotch songwriters but they should not attempt such songs as Barbara Allen

  • Nobody should try to do anything because they could never live up to your standards. Hey benkit49, you cynical dumbass, they didn't intend of this being on a studio release and neither did dylan.

  • Can't see a problem with taking an older song (especially a traditional one) and stylising/updating to become something new. It's been done many times before (probably in a lot of cases most people don't realise) and it doesn't mean you can't still enjoy or appreciate the original version. Have a look at 'Toll the Bell Easy' which was one of many versions on the same theme that eventually became Bob Dylan' s'In My Time of Dyin'..both great songs. And lets not forget Scarborough Fair/Canticle....

  • i agree...its the point that Hendrix and Led Zeppelin proved many times.

but lately a lot of modern bands (Jonas Brothers and MCR) have taken classic songs of the Beatles and Bob Dylan and completely lost what i think the original writers wanted to convey....

  • I think it can be very valuable if people interpret songs very different then their writers, this can lead to very different versions, and potentially brilliant ones. Songs are, imho, to evolve, not to be repeated forever in similar ways. (Although I completely agree on the jonas brothers, though i doubt they did it themselves)

  • They created the best band ever...

  • Maybe you should re read my comment. I said "As well as they sang Bridge Over Troubled Waters" If you don't understand that, let me add that 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' is a beautiful song and in my opinion, the best song Simon and Garfunkel ever did.

  • This is the best version I've heard until now

  • This is a real musical treasure. KUDOS & ***** to you - Happy New Year!

  • Thank you for posting this, I had never heard it before. I think it is wonderful, but then I would get a thrill from hearing Simon and Garfunkel singing the telephone directory in their wonderful harmony.

  • c'est la version la plus "irish", simple et véridique.

merci, Paul Simon, troubadour depuis toujours et merci à Art ................

  • This song makes me sleepy

  • Me too in a glorious way...

  • If you people will read a well written article on Barbara Allen (the Song) in Wikipedia, you will see that most of you are wrong.

.........and for what's it's worth, I think these two gentlemen (as well as they sang Bridge Over Troubled Waters) massacred this song.

  • I must agree. This does this great traditional song an injustice. I feel that Art Garfunkel's solo version is by far a more accutrate portrayal. And beautifully sung as well.

  • Thank you for your comment. I wasn't aware of Garfunkel's solo before you mentioned it.

And I agree with you. It is much better.

Your term "accurate portrayal" is key here.

  • Quite welcome, my friend. I don't mind a song being upgraded with a better voice, better musical instrumentation, etc. But to "stylize" a song by totally changing the sound of it just makes it a new song, but with the same lyrics. Leave the traditional songs alone. They are traditional because their original versions were what people loved. If you want to make your mark on music then write your own song and sing it.

  • Not that Simon and Garfunkel haven't made their mark on music. They did. But not by stylizing this song. They did it with their own original compositions.

  • Bisolda is right. It's Paul Simon song. I know 'cause i'm inerested about it and I was reading book about Simon&Garfunkel and on my Cd is wririting that is song by Paul Simon.

  • I love this version and Dylan's, but I can't stand Garfunkel singing it alone.

Oh I nearly forgot to add a huge SORRY for all the people, who are not accepting other people's opinion.

  • Actually, this is being sung by the Everly Brothers. This is not Simon and Garfunkel.

  • I'm sorry, but you are wrong, it is Simon & Garfunkel. It's a demo that was included as an extra in the box set of their studio albums. This one was included in the "Sounds of Silence" album.

  • My god, its simon and garfunkel!!! search your facts first .

  • Pull yourself together, hunni. ( And what has god got to do with it. ) If you will read my reply to Blisolda from 5 days ago you will see that I already acknowledged my mistake. Maybe instead of claiming god as yours you should search your fa........er.....read a little more.

  • This is just a demo version that dident make it on the sound of silence album. If it waqs offcial it would be made much better. They just wanted to try it out. Which is why it sounds abit slopy.

  • How odd. I heard a version of Barbara Allen done solo by Art Garfunkel and it was the most beautiful version I have ever heard. But when he gets with Paul Simon, it seems he completely forgot the tune. This version had the words, but that was anything but " Barbara Allen ".

  • That's because it's a different version of the song, with a completely different melody line... Andreas Scholl, the German countertenor, has a version of that same song, the version that Garfunkel sings, with slightly different lyrics.

  • Ah. Then please accept my apology for my mistake. But it is truly uncanny how much this sounds like the Everly Brothers version of this song. ( That was not a veiled hint, just a statement ).

  • Well my name is Barbara Allen, so the song is familiar to me, but I enjoyed hearing all the versions. Thanks

  • This is a great song.

  • The traditional songs name "Barbara Allen" (sp)

  • Is that song traditional?

  • Barbara allen yes :) as far as I know, the lyrics are the same.

  • written in england circa mid 18th century no one knows who wrote it,simon and garfunkel are doing the exact copy of the everly bros version here. but in my opinion the everly's did it a whole lot better.but that's just my oppinion.

  • It is a southern folk song with other roots that are much older. See the movie Songcatcher and the song catcher soundtrack for a more traditional version (or other southern folk artists) this version is good for a new twist though. :)

  • It was originally an old Scottish song, then adapted as an English one. It became very popular in America, too, but the tune is slightly different in America.

  • this song was written in england, people who went to america in those days just took it over with them

  • Another beautiful song from S&G. Love this one.

  • Who does the first popular recording of this song?

  • The song is traditional, so don't know who recorded it first, but Garfunkel does the definitive version on his "Angel Clare" album.

  • Thanks, I never heard this version before, nice.

  • This is a great version!
