@RFKFANTS67 It's a Courtesy Ensign; when you're in a country not your own, you fly their flag on a spreader or something, as a gesture. If you check out 1:16 you can see the American Ensign on the stern, where the flag of your home country flies. A lot of ships with Flags of Convenience fly their country of Registry on the stern (as you must), and the country they are owned by, or want to represent, someplace forward. One of the few great laws that mandate being cool to each other.
@cactipus There should be more such laws! Peope would get along better..I always found the stars and stripes a very attractive flag, we should fly more of them around or on official buildings then what they do like schools ect..side by side..:}
My grandfather was a wheelsman on the Raymond H. Reiss, It was on the flagship of the cleveland cliffs fleet. I remember running arount the engine room of the reiss when I was a child, ore runs deep in my veins. My grandfather used to call ore (taconite) "minnesota realestate" does anybody remember that term?
Since i was very young i remember my dad took me to see this bout i think 1973. I thought it was the ocean or something. The Ship was Gigantic Like something from 20.000 leagues beneath the sea . When The song came out a few years later I treasured it not understanding the gravity of these occurrences at the time. Yet I felt it somehow befitting to have such a Noble song dedicated to Those souls who lost their lives in what must have been a truly terrifying ordeal. Thank you for sharing this
my mom was listening to the marine radio when they started calling for help till the radio went silent, she says she will never forget that. its a sad thing
@macdaddy8595 It was a freighter and they were hauling Iron Ore. There is a really good video w/footage under "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" posted by Josephutton. It has a video and the music is by Gordon Lightfoot (his tribute to the men who died on this ship). That song pretty much explains exactly what happened.

@jstottlemyer Nor do I have a problem with it, for all I know? it could be common practice for both sides to fly each others flags.
