Botti CAN play ... does have technique ... Can he improvise (without some focused rehearsal - including where he's going to stand on stage and who he's going to smile at at the end of bar 16 - I don't think so. That's the ability we are hearing now Harrell ... Chet and a score of other greats who were 'into' creating the music instantaneously. Well, for me that is the true jazz ... but those big concerts and big name features Botti offers are also great - in their way.
Tom Harrell blows the modern-day poopers away: Chris Botti and Rick Braun, and yes even Herb Alpert...3 pretty boys with no ideas and no playing chops...
@DancingSpiderman Well, you are absolutely wrong about Chris Botti. He is not an artist at the level of Tom Harrell, no question, but he can really play the trumpet.
@chetbaker9 mehhh... OK... IF you like Botti THAT much, well...still meh
At least Chris Botti looks a whole lot prettier pooping out notes that the typical trumpeter. And Botti doesn't have the goofy "depressed Cousin It" behavior onstage that Harrell has. To see Tom Harrel in action during his golden years, watch the YouTube video "Chuck Bumgione". It's a short historical in perspective...
@DancingSpiderman I don't really like Chris Botti, I'm just pointing out that your post about him having "no playing chops" is absolutely, empirically wrong.
@chetbaker9 OK Chet, maybe I sorta kinda you know was incorrect on Crhis Botti's ability. Feel free to reply on any other posts I might have been incorrect on.
Chetbaker #1 definitely had the chops as well as the artistry. RIP Chet. I hope you have peace of mind now.
@chetbaker9 I hope you can count on an amicable, if not amiable, discussion MOST of the time with me. Yes, would be great to have less hostility on the YourTube. Good day, budd.
@DancingSpiderman You're a dick. You'd be "depressed" too if you were schizophrenic. Anyone who has shit to talk about Tom Harrell can go choke on a fat one. "golden days".. that's a fucking laugh. He's still fantastic... If you'd seen him live in the last 3 years, you'd know he's been writing plenty, and still plays like a gypsy. Oh yeah, and Chris Botti is the Kenny G of trumpet... know nothing ass.
great musician

botti is a good player when he wants to be but he makes to much money playing commercial smooth jazz, which has its place (sell out)

@KrummyBear you are in error. I am not talking shit about Tom Harrell. I respect him and his ability.
You are merely being a sissy Reverse CowGirl.

Playing smooth and fast on a vintage Couesnon is difficult. Tom Harrell is an absolute master.. Thanks for posting this great clip.

Still one of my all-time favorite trumpet players, and for good reason. Thanks for posting this enjoyable performance.
