  • I remember this!! ~*MEMORIES*~

  • This is not a gospel . This is the choral arrangment. Every black college who can really sing . We( Alabama A&M ) did it with a full organ and the last verse acalella and slow. Black music is more than gospel

  • Marty!!!

  • I wish that the entire song was on here. Marvelous job! Brings back so many memories

  • GREAT!!! I luv it

  • Who's the composer of this song? I love it!

  • James Weldon Johnson wrote the words and his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, set it to music in about 1900.

  • More specifically, this arrangement is by Roland M. Carter. He dedicated it to the Hampton Institute (now University) Choirs of which he was the conductor.

  • Thanks for the correction and the interesting tidbit. I did not know that Carter dedicated this arrangement to the Hampton Choirs.

I've ALWAYS loved what he did to this piece.

  • really great. great energy!

  • That Gurl Vikki is amazing

  • Melba Moore Her 1990 recording of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was instrumental in having that song entered into the Congressional Record as the official African-American National Anthem
