Hey i got a question .. im driving Ubuntu on a virtual disk.. So i was wondering when the start screen was comming where there stands .. try now or install now.. Can i install it on the virtual without affecting my computer? ;)
@technoexpert112 i tink so. i am from holand and downloaded it on the dutch ubuntu site. when i ran it on VM ware player it just installed and done. something you have to do if you are still not sure
I love this OS. I install it into my Laptop and remove windows. Now windows is another virtual machine. It's a very stable OS...much better than windows.
Ubuntu is a piece of shit, tried it and the gni (graphical nerd interface) feels utterly shocking.
The forums are just a userbase of Mac hating nerds, and that's all they do, create thread after post bashing Macs, yet in the next breath they try and make Ubuntu look like OSX. Enjoy your 1% nerd status as it's something I would never be a part of, rather have no OS than have Ubuntu.
Oh please, did you really expect a "love thy mac" discussion on a forum for linux? If you had no OS then that abstraction from the Hardware would be gone, and there goes usability. The interface can be hard at first, but that's why we learn. Mac's do it all for you, linux is more of a "Here's the wilderness, now EXPLORE!" kind of OS. If you don't like it fine, and don't generalize the users, we are not all apart of that elitist prick group.
@goihe If you're new I'd recommend LinuxMint as it's totally oriented to a friendly user interface and taking all the complications away from user's hands. I use it and I personally like it a lot
I just installed this OS and I get to the login screen, type in the password and then nothing. I get the little login jingle but the screen remains blank/has the background but nothing else apart from the mouse pointer. The mouse pointer really lags, HD activity is null.
hey, i downloaded linux 11.04 on a cd and whenever i start it up, instead of running what you have here, it basically runs a command prompt but thats all i can do as far as i know. did i do something wrong?
@MrFallout396 Thank you for your concern, but I have to disagree. GNOME is an acronym for the GNU Network Object Model Environment, not the actual word "gnome". However, it has become commonplace and very acceptable to pronounce it "nome".
I didn't like Ubuntu because of TERMINAL. I hate it, i dont know anything about programing so i realised that if i want free and good userfrendly os the best solution is to download Windows XP from thepirtebayDOTcom or some other site
tried it.. some issues with the hotkeys i.e. super+... accidently bringing up launcher
also dont like having to double-click in the desktop switcher.
not so bad though. I like the screencorners activating the desktop switcher on the mac, also the mousewheel desktop switcher on some other linux distros.
@herewegoall I've used 11.04's final version and even released a video on Thursday showing the Alpha version of 11.10 that will be coming out in October.
@iApple2luv1 About 70% of the world's websites run Linux because it is free, secure, and completely scalable. Trust me, you use Linux even if you don't interface with it directly.
And since you seem to love Apple, consider this. Pixar uses LINUX for its rendering farms. The software they used was sold to other companies (Dreamworks and others), so they use Linux too.
@webmastertool Given that many people wouldn't need anything more than email, word processor, browser, and media player, I'd wager that one of the easy distributions like Ubuntu or Mint would be just fine with them. Heck, Ubuntu's got an awesome centralized software system that can update all its packages from one single click. I wouldn't call it finished yet, but then again the only finished project is a dead project.
@iApple2luv1 Then go eat your hardrive now. Waste your money on everything you can get for free.
Also, most of the webservers run on Linux. Most likely Debian, Fedora or Red Hat.
Heh, do you think a multi-company can make better software than a large community of THE USERS themselves? No way. Be assured it's not a scam either. You can read the sources of everything if you don't believe. Absolutely clear. It won't die either. The OpenSource community is yet growing bigger.
@MrYamahaRaptor700 totally a matter of opinion and necessity. if you're a die-hard Windows gamer, and the games you want to play aren't available for Linux, no, it's not better for you. If you use some open source software, or you aren't tied to specific pieces of software that may not be available for Linux yet (like Adobe products), it's definitely worth a shot.
In my experience, I prefer Linux to Windows 7 and Mac OSX, but that's just me.
@thisweekinlinux This was a very good answer. Too many people have gone on an OS-bashing tirade (myself included at times). In reality, all three major OSs have things that they are good at. For whatever reason, content-makers that like DRM tend to gravitate toward Windows from what I've seen. That means things like the new HDHomeRun Prime, with CableCARD support, is only designed for Windows environments. Pretty much the same for Blu Ray programs. Even though I'm a PC, I still love Linux.
@LNMagic I'm not an OS zealot, more of a realist. The computer is a tool to accomplish your goals, and one OS is not perfect for everyone and everyone's needs. :)
@thisweekinlinux I realize your point and agree with you. Windows suits my needs fairly well, but it certainly has its limitations - file permissions and fragmented files for starters. At any rate, I'll need to increase my Linux skills to work in IT.
ok, im EXTREMELY new to linux, installed it on 2 laptops, a friends old laptop - 9.10 and mine (old ish) 11.04. 9.10 installed fine, and had a bit of a play around with it. after installing 11.04 ive encountered nothing but problem after problem. compiz wont install, WINE keeps fucking up, its driving me fucking insane. its put me RIGHT OFF linux altogether. should i down grade to 10.10 or something? coz this OS is a fucking useless piece of fucking garbage :@
@kuzeth Make sure you have your graphics drivers installed by going to the "Additional Drivers" application. If you're seeing the Unity interface (big bar on the left side with launchers on it) they should be working, at least somewhat. However, if Compiz isn't working, I'll assume you have no video drivers. System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers to get started.
As far as Wine, that one's difficult. Probably best to add the PPA from the Winehq website to make sure you're up to date.
@thisweekinlinux hey thanks for the speedy reply and not taking my ignorant rant too seriously lol. ive got 10.10 working well on my friends toshiba but have no use of my mouse on my dell inspirion mini .. thanks for the advice, ill give it a go n see how it goes. as long as it works on the toshiba ill be happy because its pretty much the only thing thats going to make it useable seeing as its so old. compiz n everything seems to be working alright in macbuntu on it, only problem is its so slow
@kuzeth the os is smoother then windows... and more advanced. The only thing is that it sux cause if the driver is NOT open source, it DOES NOT automaticly install it, cause ubuntu wants everything to be non copyrighted
i've never been an eye candy focused person, but i must admit that Unity is sexy. one has to do a bit digging around in order to get to a terminal in the default DE, however, and is a sign of Ubuntu's attempts to appeal to the point-and-click majority.
no real problem with that, though it does seem as if Ubuntu is becoming a bit more Mac-ish.
Right now im using aMSN and Emesene, i dont really like them, but is there any other chat things like that? cause i dont like the ones i have now :S ??
i keep w7 on my hd and usd a full install on usb, to get some ubuntu goodness. ubuntu has a nice pre vista feel with its gif playing picture view and its layout is so logical and clean- i nearly shit my pants when i did a usb for 11 and thought i wiped w7 of my hd instead, because frankly 11 is horrible- it makes your serious cpu look like an over blown i-phone. like blender 2.5, this is like forcing you to put up with a less friendly interface to use new features. turn back while you can
@Wiz4Rd7 make sure you have your graphics drivers installed. Go into System -> Administration -> Additional drivers (I assume you're running 11.04 and seeing the "Classic" interface).
by upgrading last night I've lost my weather indicator, cpu monitoring for energy saving and there seem to be no way to drag things back on the upon desktop bar. I can't even find the administration panel.. My cube is gone !
I thought I hated windows 7 but you know what.. feels great compared to this new ****.
downloading 10.10 back again....
Everything I enjoyed about ubuntu is not gone with this update. FU
@bicnarok There are. it's just a matter of doing a little research before buying to make sure it's compatible. Anything with an intel chip will almost certainly work. Broadcom cards are getting better. Realtek is decent, usually. Atheros has a good history.
I bought a $10-15 USB Rosewill 802.11n stick on Newegg a year ago and it works beautifully in Linux.
@thisweekinlinux thanks for the info, had problems finding any at all to be honest. Loved Ubuntu to bits, until certain hardware wouldn´t work due to lack of drivers
I've always liked linux, but the default setup with 2 wasted strips at the top and bottom of the screen (along with menubar and titlebar) is wrong - it was like they had that layout just to make it look different to win/mac.
The wastage is exacerbated on the popular Widescreen displays.
The unity interface is a smart design, a big step forward.
Defaulting the "dock" to the side of the screen is a smart move.
@walter0bz The configuration table for the launcher dock is rather restricted, I've yet to successfully change the theme to match the reflexive titlebar in an integrated scheme the desktop switcher is less facilitant than its antecedent.
I don't mean to play the Luddite: I think a lot of the changes are for the better, and I've been discovering pleasant features regularly. The problem is that a lot of the execution falls short of the ideal; it seems like it's the bleeding edge.
@daftrhetoric - the distro's which just have one taskbar and no top are a good compromise. Been using a mac lately, reminded me: global menu is good on medium size screens, but with very large or multiply screens its not perfect. Perhaps I should get some more apps for GnuStep with its' NeXT style menus...
@walter0bz As you've noted the more efficient use of space is greatly appreciated, but whenever learning something new there's a tendency to get caught on the every sacrifice against prior intuition made in changing, I find that a lot of this interface is less than intuitive.
Every now and again I am unable to ratiocinate navigation of my ui and am consequently inclined to boot vms and just use their interfaces. I'm sure in time its design will polish, but at present it's not to my taste.
Ubuntu 11 popped my Linux cherry, and in general - I'm pretty satisfied.
However I'm experiencing a few problems. Most notably, the desktop has some weird issues. Sometimes the bar on the top of the screen will disappear. Same goes for the top bar in different windows. Other times the background will go black, but will reappear if i highlight the entire screen.
Automatic login via the Login Screen piece of software has always been there, if I recall correctly. I'm using 10.04 LTS and it's in the Preference submenu inside the System menu.
Thanks for the review. Plenty of useful information.
mmm i used to had a netbook with this i never understood it.... i opened so many of the same program because i never figure where they went only a arrow apper. also the arrow only appere on the favorite programs (i recomend linux mint)
mmm i used to had a netbook with this i never understood it.... i opened so many of the same program because i never figure where they went only a arrow apper. also the arrow only appere on the favorite programs
Didn't like the Unity interface. I changed it back to the previous one. To be honest, if you're on 10 I don't see a need to upgrade. 10.10 worked great for me. Now I get random crashes and a stupid popping sound from the speaker on 11.
Hi I need some of your help on using ubuntu. I have a windows and I downloaded it so I could use both and after I install it I restart my computer and choose ubuntu to complete installation. What happens is that it says that it couldn't find the .iso file. I've done chkdsk /r and I know the .iso is there. What can I do now? I really want ubuntu,
If you want the old Gnome interface you can select it if you Logout and choose Ubuntu clasic over ubuntu at the log in screen. it work for me don't panic at the firs sing of blood
I don't longer use windows. I use Ubuntu 11.04 is a free OPERATION SYSTEM. is better then windows 7. I don't get virus malware trojan worm root killer all the shit the makes windows sick as a dog. it's ease to install and use you can run it from a jump drive (flash drive ). MY wife and I been using it from also 3 years.
@9322002898 hello dude. you can install ubuntu within Xp just like any other program. Yes your computer will work fine. just go to ubuntu.com and download the latest version or ubuntu 10.04.
This upgrade screwed up my MAME. The games run really choppy now. I use GMAMEUI with it. It was running really nice on the last version. Have you heard anything about people having trouble with this?
@jamo387 what sort of graphics card are you running? I've heard of some people having issues with Unity performance with ATI cards, and if you install compizconfig-settings-manager, you can disable the opengl components, which might help.
Hey man i have a problem i installed Ubuntu 11.04 and installed the drivers for my Ati card but when i download compiz and try to enable the effects like the 3D cube the the screen just freezes and i have to restart the PC i had no trouble enableing the effects on 10.10.So can you help me with that maybe it's a bug or something ?
@NikolaGB you might try installing compizconfig-settings-manager, open the "OpenGL" options inside of it, and uncheck "Sync to Vblank" and change the "Texture Filter" to "Fast". Might help.
I been working on a flavour of Linux that is Ubuntu and Debian based with a taste of Linux Mint in there as well, Gnome3 pisses me off and Unity is OK but lacking..
@kristijanadrian a lot of touch screen functionality depends on kernel modules, and those are supposed to be improved/updated with this version. Ubuntu has implemented a new feature (as of 10.10, if I remember correctly) called uTouch that is a whole multitouch language. Just have to get the devices supported, which will hopefully work now. :)
@kristijanadrian Implementing Windows programs/games depends on one of two things: Wine (which is a completely different project), or Microsoft providing the specs for basically everything they do, which isn't going to happen. As far as CAD/video/audio software, those things are definitely in the works. I've been editing video and audio on Linux for almost a year and a half now with decent success.
@eddyelking I don't believe so, not for now. Shuttleworth said something about the decision to keep it on the left only, but it would be possible to run Avant Window Navigator or something else to have a bottom dock.
Now I use ubuntu 11.04 :D

by upgrading last night I've lost my weather indicator, cpu monitoring for energy saving and there seem to be no way to drag things back on the upon desktop bar. I can't even find the administration panel.. My cube is gone !
I thought I hated windows 7 but you know what.. feels great compared to this new ****.
downloading 10.10 back again....
Everything I enjoyed about ubuntu is not gone with this update. FU

Are there any WIFi USB sticks which work with Ubuntu? I deleted it because it wouldn´t go online due to lack of drivers.
bicnarok 10 months ago
@bicnarok There are. it's just a matter of doing a little research before buying to make sure it's compatible. Anything with an intel chip will almost certainly work. Broadcom cards are getting better. Realtek is decent, usually. Atheros has a good history.
I bought a $10-15 USB Rosewill 802.11n stick on Newegg a year ago and it works beautifully in Linux.
thisweekinlinux 10 months ago
@thisweekinlinux thanks for the info, had problems finding any at all to be honest. Loved Ubuntu to bits, until certain hardware wouldn´t work due to lack of drivers
bicnarok 10 months ago
@bicnarok : I was using Ubuntu 10.10 and got the same issue, no wifi usb sticks were working.
Then I upgraded my system to Ubuntu 11.04 with wifi USB(Belkin Basic) plugged and it worked automatically after upgrade without any changes.

@amarnyadav thanks for the info, might try it if I can find out what belkin basic is:)

I strongly dislike the unity interface.
daftrhetoric 10 months ago
@daftrhetoric -
global menu = WIN
I've always liked linux, but the default setup with 2 wasted strips at the top and bottom of the screen (along with menubar and titlebar) is wrong - it was like they had that layout just to make it look different to win/mac.
The wastage is exacerbated on the popular Widescreen displays.
The unity interface is a smart design, a big step forward.
Defaulting the "dock" to the side of the screen is a smart move.
walter0bz 10 months ago
@walter0bz The configuration table for the launcher dock is rather restricted, I've yet to successfully change the theme to match the reflexive titlebar in an integrated scheme the desktop switcher is less facilitant than its antecedent.
I don't mean to play the Luddite: I think a lot of the changes are for the better, and I've been discovering pleasant features regularly. The problem is that a lot of the execution falls short of the ideal; it seems like it's the bleeding edge.
daftrhetoric 9 months ago
@daftrhetoric - the distro's which just have one taskbar and no top are a good compromise. Been using a mac lately, reminded me: global menu is good on medium size screens, but with very large or multiply screens its not perfect. Perhaps I should get some more apps for GnuStep with its' NeXT style menus...
walter0bz 9 months ago
@walter0bz As you've noted the more efficient use of space is greatly appreciated, but whenever learning something new there's a tendency to get caught on the every sacrifice against prior intuition made in changing, I find that a lot of this interface is less than intuitive.
Every now and again I am unable to ratiocinate navigation of my ui and am consequently inclined to boot vms and just use their interfaces. I'm sure in time its design will polish, but at present it's not to my taste.
daftrhetoric 9 months ago
I have noticed problems with changing the time in this version.
desertman147 10 months ago
Ubuntu 11 popped my Linux cherry, and in general - I'm pretty satisfied.
However I'm experiencing a few problems. Most notably, the desktop has some weird issues. Sometimes the bar on the top of the screen will disappear. Same goes for the top bar in different windows. Other times the background will go black, but will reappear if i highlight the entire screen.
Any newbie tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Automatic login via the Login Screen piece of software has always been there, if I recall correctly. I'm using 10.04 LTS and it's in the Preference submenu inside the System menu.
Thanks for the review. Plenty of useful information.

Compiz, and all gnome programs wont work, because unity does not use GNU its something different, i switched back to 10.10.
SuperRaginazn 10 months ago
Didn't like the Unity interface. I changed it back to the previous one. To be honest, if you're on 10 I don't see a need to upgrade. 10.10 worked great for me. Now I get random crashes and a stupid popping sound from the speaker on 11.
Ubuntu is still brilliant for all that.

This upgrade screwed up my MAME. The games run really choppy now. I use GMAMEUI with it. It was running really nice on the last version. Have you heard anything about people having trouble with this?
jamo387 10 months ago
@jamo387 what sort of graphics card are you running? I've heard of some people having issues with Unity performance with ATI cards, and if you install compizconfig-settings-manager, you can disable the opengl components, which might help.
thisweekinlinux 10 months ago
Hey man i have a problem i installed Ubuntu 11.04 and installed the drivers for my Ati card but when i download compiz and try to enable the effects like the 3D cube the the screen just freezes and i have to restart the PC i had no trouble enableing the effects on 10.10.So can you help me with that maybe it's a bug or something ?
NikolaGB 10 months ago
@NikolaGB you might try installing compizconfig-settings-manager, open the "OpenGL" options inside of it, and uncheck "Sync to Vblank" and change the "Texture Filter" to "Fast". Might help.

How in the holy Lord's name do you record whilst you are on your computer?
Skopuningurin 10 months ago
@kristijanadrian a lot of touch screen functionality depends on kernel modules, and those are supposed to be improved/updated with this version. Ubuntu has implemented a new feature (as of 10.10, if I remember correctly) called uTouch that is a whole multitouch language. Just have to get the devices supported, which will hopefully work now. :)
thisweekinlinux 10 months ago
@kristijanadrian Implementing Windows programs/games depends on one of two things: Wine (which is a completely different project), or Microsoft providing the specs for basically everything they do, which isn't going to happen. As far as CAD/video/audio software, those things are definitely in the works. I've been editing video and audio on Linux for almost a year and a half now with decent success.
