USSR and Mao killed mostly 30 millions of their own people and many Europeans who lived in Eastern Europe tried to go over the Berlin Wall so it doesn't look like the USSR are that great so we cannot let it dominate the world. Just look at North Korea for examples, very poor compare to South Korea.
@wishmolly I'm not trying to justify US interventions. The US government was very abusive during the Cold war and we did deal with a lot of stupid characters that are against the USSR. That's why America isn't perfect but world can't just sit back and let the USSR do what it wants. It was a case of picking the lesser of two evils. It's call Containment for a reason.

It got to the point of counting the minutes until I left. That's not to say I didn't make quite a few wonderful friends of which I'm friends with to this day.

@wishmolly I see what you mean but if US has not pay attention to what the USSR is doing then we would live under a communist world. I agree with you that both sides shared the blame for supporting dictators reardlgess of leader's brutality or not for their interest but communism in general would not work and it just don't. Time changes after the Cold War where we started to focus on the bad guys instead of just installing their own puppet. Look at NK for example compare to SK.

@wishmolly Indeed the USSR invented a lot of great things like the great space race but overall their aggressive policies are not that great. USSR and Mao killed mostly 30 millions of their own people and many Europeans who lived in Eastern Europe tried to go over the Berlin Wall so it doesn't look like the USSR are that great so we cannot let it dominate the world. Just look at North Korea for examples, very poor compare to South Korea.

@wishmolly I'm not trying to justify US interventions. The US government was very abusive during the Cold war and we did deal with a lot of stupid characters that are against the USSR. That's why America isn't perfect but world can't just sit back and let the USSR do what it wants. It was a case of picking the lesser of two evils. It's call Containment for a reason.
Communism is pretty limited in today's world with a prevented the spread of communist and the influence of the USSR.

@wishmolly Well you do need to understand the Cold War though that both USSR and US intervention to impose their beliefs on other countries. During most of the US administration, being anti-communist is more important that anti-socialist working democracy meaning we dealt some stupid pro-US dictators. As bad as they were, the communist alternative is the worse. the US make big mistakes along the way but if we sit back and let the USSR do what it wants in the CW, we would not be typing here.

@AndyMKordo I'm an American who lived five years in Europe in the 80's serving in the Army and this is quite accurate in my view. I faced quite a bit of it, especially in Germany and Italy. It got to the point of counting the minutes until I left. That's not to say I didn't make quite a few wonderful friends of which I'm friends with to this day.
