If you put top notch hardware in there, you could....own every single game ever made, ever..... every single song ever made, ever.....and several hundred dicillion photos ever taken, ever..... and unlimited emails!
@waseem1173 After looking at my ever-increasing number of external 2tb hard drives that have no fault tolerance at all, this is starting to look good to me
@revcletis wow really. what are you storing on them lol
You can install at least six or more 3 1/2 inch drives in a ATX case, soon we will have 4TB hard drives in that form factor. wont 6 of those suffice your need ? And you can get a PCIe RAID card for your RAID setup.
i am assuming your'e not budget constrained being that you are willing to invest in a server grade solution as a alternate.
@waseem1173 well I do a lot of real-time graphics rendering and some HPC stuff; as any cg-fx designer will tell you a rendered movie will take up a lot of space. I am
now at the point where speed is an issue and USB 2.0 just won't cut it. This norco box solves my access and space problem at a decent price :) Now if we can just get cheaper drives out of Thailand :(
In a NAS environment, trust me, you don't want to do software RAID, you would be looking at a speed about 1.1GB taking 50 seconds. When your filling up 24 2TB drives, that is extremely slow. Just showed this to a customer yesterday who was wanting speed from a software raid.
This case - 24 Sandforce SSD in Raid 0, that 2 cpu board from evga, 2 of intels fastest CPU's.. if theres one beyond the 980X, full awesome RAM and like.. 3 way GTX 580's. :P
Free energy is finaly here! But a few ppl make too many billions from our energy needs to let this technology be known,Find this technology at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Free yourself!
Sweet....I'm defiantly gonna check out NCIX in Markham, Ontario. I haven't even been in the store yet. $400.00 is not too bad. I have recently decided to R.I.P...lol, rip all my DVD's onto drives and this is the solution for a movie server. I'm gonna use 2 by 4 to build a rack for it and sound proof it in the closet. I have bought 3 Western Digital HD Network Media players for the family and we have too many DVDs all around the house & the dog likes to chew on the cases and ruins the dvds.
That RAID card is way overkill for a case with only one SFF-8087 connector :D. I use a 3ware 9690SA-4I (one SFF-8087 connector) with my Supermicro SC846E case, like this Norco it has 24 drives on a SAS backplane.
@JustinR19 Im plenty sure there is no RAID controller in the market right now capable of handling such bandwidth. Look at the video called samsung awesomeness here in youtube, they try to raid 0 24 ssd´s and the areca controller wanst able to handle it, they found a limit for the controller.
SSDs in a server doesn't really make much sense. I build servers for 3PAR, a company that has an option for an 50GB x 16 array; just let me say this, it's not the most efficient use of space. Sure it runs fast, but 800GB of storage isn't exactly cost effective vs. 15K RPM drives from Seagate.
@myuusmeow Yes. High end RAID cards use actual ram for their cache. So even if you have crappy slow drives connected this will beat the piss out of even high end SSDs when working with cached data.
I love your videos but I'm getting pretty sick of how you treat the poor camera guy. You're a geek doing unboxing videos on Youtube for other geeks (myself included) not directing a multi-million dollar motion picture....chill out.
This is what I like about your videos, Linus, apart from the regular stuff, you even try and explain the lesser known but important facts. In this case 4U, which I am pretty sure not many people know.
Hey Linus, the 4U refers to the the number of U's it takes up. A single U is 1.75 inches i height, So a 4U would be 7" in height. And if you look at the specs of it, it matches up. Also all rack equipment is 19" wide, that number doesnt change, just Us
@Hester708 i think he has answered this before, if memory serves me right he dose get to keep some stuff and others he has to send back, but i might be thinking of another youtuber.
What is your obsession with file storage Linus? I mean really, I get by just fine with 10000+ songs and 100+ movies with a little over 1TB of storage! How much stuff could you possibly have to save?!?!
LOL! Congrats Norco! you just made another fail case! Not only does this case (plus RAID card/expander) cost MORE than Supermicro, assuming Linus is correct about redundant power on the backplane, there's only one PSU hole. That means to have redundant power you're looking at another $500. Here's a bit of math: $410 Case + $400 RAID + $500 Expander = SC846E1. And you're still missing redundant PSUs and a proper backplane.
Just because the case LOOKS cheap doesn't mean it is after factoring.
@xuemike That depends on the output data speed you need. With software raid you are using your cpu to do the math and never will achieve such performance. Using port multiplier you are limited by the maximum transfer rate of a single sata cable conected to 4 o 5 sata drives. Obviously there is a bottleneck. Software raid is cheap and very usefull if you need huge storage space with a standard speed. For example storing videos or music in you home NAS. But if you need 900 mb/s read speeds dont.
LOL you should recharge those batteries everytime you are filming an unboxing. Or do you always say that as an excuse to "pause" the video and fix stuff lol
for me the fans should be the exact opposite they are. cus i think the 4 fans intake will suck hot air from the hdd and not push cool air to cool them. they air flow should be in the opposite action. or there is another choice. put fans in the side of the hard drives. one sides suck air from outside through the hdd and the other side push it out! anyway nice product and good review. can't wait for the build!!!! ;)
wow! nice to unbox something a bit special. Thanks for using mirror sunglasses too, we could get a glace of the cameraman for once :P

I've always called the the second generation of SATA "SATA 300" because the data rate was 300 MByte/s and the third generation was 600 MByte/s.
This is just as confusing as the Rambo movies.
There's "First Blood" (Most People just call it "Rambo"), "Rambo: First Blood Part II" (most people just call it "Rambo II") and then came "Rambo III" and after that the fourth movie was just called "Rambo".
24 drives. I don't need that many, but it would be nice to know that I could. :)
