  • 24 drives. I don't need that many, but it would be nice to know that I could. :)

  • If you put top notch hardware in there, you could....own every single game ever made, ever..... every single song ever made, ever.....and several hundred dicillion photos ever taken, ever..... and unlimited emails!

  • what that dimm on raid card?

  • @andruha7200 The card has 512MB of RAM integrated. Probably for a cache to send to all the drives.

  • 2:32 there is nothing little about that server haha nice vid tho!

  • It's been funny if he dropped it in the water

  • I would like to meet the "Home User" who needs this product :p .

  • @waseem1173 After looking at my ever-increasing number of external 2tb hard drives that have no fault tolerance at all, this is starting to look good to me

    as a raid solution. :)

  • @revcletis wow really. what are you storing on them lol

You can install at least six or more 3 1/2 inch drives in a ATX case, soon we will have 4TB hard drives in that form factor. wont 6 of those suffice your need ? And you can get a PCIe RAID card for your RAID setup.

i am assuming your'e not budget constrained being that you are willing to invest in a server grade solution as a alternate.

  • @waseem1173 well I do a lot of real-time graphics rendering and some HPC stuff; as any cg-fx designer will tell you a rendered movie will take up a lot of space. I am

now at the point where speed is an issue and USB 2.0 just won't cut it. This norco box solves my access and space problem at a decent price :) Now if we can just get cheaper drives out of Thailand :(

  • @revcletis Well you're more than a average home user then lol

And i hope so too bro the prices have gone crazy high, might be a while till production catches up with demand :|

  • Do you even lift?

  • anybody else look at this and instantly want to slap a HUUGE rad in there?

  • i miss you cameraman

  • you just made my day hahahahaha

  • For $2,000 you can have the case and the RAID controller, for another $6,000 you can fill it with drives ;)

  • why is he outside?

  • @00101110o you don't watch linus alot do you?

  • they look like delta fans

  • The RPC-4224 is a 24 Bay 4U Storage File Server, 10 Points?

  • @ThatAdelaideGuy Too late

  • Hey it looks like you are over by 4620 Viking Way, Richmond, BC??

  • I wouldn't be surprised if cameraman was like a 45 year old with a squeaky weird voice. now THAT'S comedy.

  • Thought Linus and the case was going in the pond 1:50 !

  • why are you doing this outside

  • The card's only $1500...

  • In a NAS environment, trust me, you don't want to do software RAID, you would be looking at a speed about 1.1GB taking 50 seconds. When your filling up 24 2TB drives, that is extremely slow. Just showed this to a customer yesterday who was wanting speed from a software raid.

  • hey..just pause that video..(@@)

  • How about 24 Western Digital 2.5 TB Hard Disk Drives in RAID1= HOLY CRAP ITS A NUKE!!

  • @ComputerProducts how about 24 G-Tech G-SPEED eS 4 TB Hot-swap hard drive running at 7200 rpm

  • raid 0 = lol! did i hear an explosion?

  • raid 0 = lol!

  • Why outside ?

  • Great brown BOX!!!

  • why the shit are you doing this outside?

  • This case - 24 Sandforce SSD in Raid 0, that 2 cpu board from evga, 2 of intels fastest CPU's.. if theres one beyond the 980X, full awesome RAM and like.. 3 way GTX 580's. :P

  • That case is called what google uses or needs

  • Везет тебе солнце у нас уже снег на улице !

  • I have a 48U server in my basement running 24 SCSI drives. It was my biggest mistake ever

  • @UltimateArco 48U you say? What planet are you living in?

  • @NoRogeR Earth, but with a temp. comparable to the sun.

  • @UltimateArco Why?

  • @UltimateArco Why? Sounds like fun

  • You'd think with a name like linus he would be suggesting LINUX or something rather then windows home server..

  • 24 HDDs = 240W or so, piss all heat TBH.

  • Hey linus, Chassis is pronounced Shasee, not Chasee

  • @untuned92 depends on where you are in England i say it as Chasee, he is from Canada so the dialect is different.

  • This guy is such a douche to his cameraman. Seriously cameraman, just smash that camera on his face

  • @electrichoneyhornet it's a joke dude

  • i saw cameraman's shadow... he's a male with short hair and a camera in his hand...

  • 1500$ raid card, that is kick ass !

  • Waiting for that build <l:D

  • Sweet....I'm defiantly gonna check out NCIX in Markham, Ontario. I haven't even been in the store yet. $400.00 is not too bad. I have recently decided to R.I.P...lol, rip all my DVD's onto drives and this is the solution for a movie server. I'm gonna use 2 by 4 to build a rack for it and sound proof it in the closet. I have bought 3 Western Digital HD Network Media players for the family and we have too many DVDs all around the house & the dog likes to chew on the cases and ruins the dvds.

  • Comment removed

  • lol 24 drive raid awesome raid controller Linus..

  • @vinicius401 hahahaha

  • WHEN WILL THE BUILD BE DONE? OMGOM GOMGOMGOMGO I WANNA SEE OMGOMGOMG

  • RPC= Republic People of China !! xD

  • 5:57 what language was that Linus?

  • That RAID card is way overkill for a case with only one SFF-8087 connector :D. I use a 3ware 9690SA-4I (one SFF-8087 connector) with my Supermicro SC846E case, like this Norco it has 24 drives on a SAS backplane.

  • 24 Sandforce-based SSD's in RAID0. DO IT!

  • @JustinR19 I hope lot's of ppl back u up man just for the sake of it. hahahaha... I really wanna see that. All on raid 0 that 'd be insane! hahha

  • @JustinR19 its been done before. its somewhere on youtube

  • @JustinR19 Im plenty sure there is no RAID controller in the market right now capable of handling such bandwidth. Look at the video called samsung awesomeness here in youtube, they try to raid 0 24 ssd´s and the areca controller wanst able to handle it, they found a limit for the controller.

  • @JustinR19

SSDs in a server doesn't really make much sense. I build servers for 3PAR, a company that has an option for an 50GB x 16 array; just let me say this, it's not the most efficient use of space. Sure it runs fast, but 800GB of storage isn't exactly cost effective vs. 15K RPM drives from Seagate.

  • the cameraman has a nice hair

  • 24 SSD on Raid 0.

    Write speed of 1tbps?

  • please build a system with this, make a huge server

  • Best job in the world.,,

  • 24 SSD in raid 0! Go GO GO!!!

  • what's Linus's pc specs?

  • do i get 10 points? you sorta have it on the video name lol

  • 10 points for reading the title ;)

  • i learn something!! haha, great vid ;]

  • $1,500 RAID CARD???? DAMN!!!!

  • That bench has seen more PC parts than I will in my entire life.

  • norco bikes r shweet! i got a norco shore

  • thumbs up for knowing about norco bikes! i own a norco DH bike ^^

  • Perfect for a SR-2 MOBO

  • Can some1 explain for me what Raid 0,6,5 or whatever means? And how to you get things like that? Ty!

  • is that a stick of ram on that raid card?

  • @myuusmeow Yes. High end RAID cards use actual ram for their cache. So even if you have crappy slow drives connected this will beat the piss out of even high end SSDs when working with cached data.

  • I love your videos but I'm getting pretty sick of how you treat the poor camera guy. You're a geek doing unboxing videos on Youtube for other geeks (myself included) not directing a multi-million dollar motion picture....chill out.

  • lol get 24 OCZ ssds in there in raid 0 XD

  • This is what I like about your videos, Linus, apart from the regular stuff, you even try and explain the lesser known but important facts. In this case 4U, which I am pretty sure not many people know.

    Thank you !

  • case looks bad, and no 1 would load like 24 hdd or ssd's

  • 24 SSDs is a great way to spend 10k dollars

  • what size PSU do you need for this beast?

  • @EZbakeROFLcakes Hard drives don't use much power, about 8-15w

  • I wonder what kind of power supply you would need for filling that up with hard drives lol

  • Comment removed

  • fill it up with 1.5 tb wait a couple of weeks and poof tons and tons of porn

  • battery run out? yeah right :P

you just needed 20 minutes to pop the back plate back in :P!

    great review :D

  • Was waiting for wheels for a case

  • Dude your batterys and memorycard fail allmost every video, replacement lol?

  • i know what's inside! it's a Norco RPC-4224 24 Bay 4U Storage File Server Case!!! XD

  • Hey Linus, the 4U refers to the the number of U's it takes up. A single U is 1.75 inches i height, So a 4U would be 7" in height. And if you look at the specs of it, it matches up. Also all rack equipment is 19" wide, that number doesnt change, just Us

  • RAID 60!

  • Keep the outdoor unboxing, I like it.

  • When you unbox all theses products do you get to keep them? So your house is like computer heaven?

  • @Hester708 i think he has answered this before, if memory serves me right he dose get to keep some stuff and others he has to send back, but i might be thinking of another youtuber.

  • @Zomgwtfbbq1228 You're thinking of someone else.

  • @Hester708 the unboxing he does are probablly for the NCIX shop. or they are just there for a few days before they are sent back.

  • OMG linus has almost met his unboxing match.

  • LINUS NEEDS TO GO TO THE GYM ! LOL

  • linus is fighting with the boxes.

  • What is your obsession with file storage Linus? I mean really, I get by just fine with 10000+ songs and 100+ movies with a little over 1TB of storage! How much stuff could you possibly have to save?!?!

  • @AllKidsOutNow Apparently I can't post URLs. Long story short, search for "The 100TB project"

  • 24 small ssd drives in 0 pls :)

  • LOL! Congrats Norco! you just made another fail case! Not only does this case (plus RAID card/expander) cost MORE than Supermicro, assuming Linus is correct about redundant power on the backplane, there's only one PSU hole. That means to have redundant power you're looking at another $500. Here's a bit of math: $410 Case + $400 RAID + $500 Expander = SC846E1. And you're still missing redundant PSUs and a proper backplane.

Just because the case LOOKS cheap doesn't mean it is after factoring.

  • @DoctorJerkberg

Who said you need $400 RAID and $500 Expander?

just use pcie multiplier and software raid. Not everyone is using this for enterprise solutions. Eg. unraid, or even ZFS are NOT to be used with RAID

  • @xuemike That depends on the output data speed you need. With software raid you are using your cpu to do the math and never will achieve such performance. Using port multiplier you are limited by the maximum transfer rate of a single sata cable conected to 4 o 5 sata drives. Obviously there is a bottleneck. Software raid is cheap and very usefull if you need huge storage space with a standard speed. For example storing videos or music in you home NAS. But if you need 900 mb/s read speeds dont.

  • Holy that RAID card looks BEAST.

  • Be nice to the cameraman.

  • Linus should unbox the cameraman! :-)

  • ITS GREAT FOR HOME USERS?! ITS LIKE OH MY GOD

  • 24 drives in raid 0 = mind blown speeds?

  • @Eagle1337 24 drives in RAID also = x 24 likelihood of failure!

  • @Locut0s

Only if you RAID0. I have 24 drives in RAID6 and I can survive 2 drives failing.

  • @DoctorJerkberg Yeah oh course. But TheNiceguy specifically mentioned RAID 0 so that's what I was replying to.

  • Norco bikes are the best!

  • damn linus is mean to the camera man.

  • @Magliter Its an inside joke between them afaik =)

  • 24 hard drives, wow that can store a whole lot of porn!

  • Oh man why would you use Windows for a file server?

  • Linus! Be good to the camera man, Im the viewer and I think he was doing good on all his angles. Chill out my man.

  • To quote the Linus in an older episode, "I can unbox anything"

  • LOL you should recharge those batteries everytime you are filming an unboxing. Or do you always say that as an excuse to "pause" the video and fix stuff lol

  • can you put a motherboard in there a use it as a super computer?

  • Wow, a card that takes RAM sticks. :O

  • I has a Norco... bike... RAWR! xD

  • how much does it weigh

  • you need to get some new Batteries Linus

  • who the hell uses so much boxes

  • @0:32 its a norco 4224 LOL title FTW

  • that is friggin insane where the hell would you put it lol i wouldnt go for something like that unless im in a buisness or somthing

  • Giveaway?

  • Comment removed

  • @KodessR and the raid card equals 2 g's

  • Tip: If anyone is going to buy this and looking for eco green hard drive wait for the Samsung EG 2TB F4.

  • tht makes bicycles?? WTF??

  • Unboxing champ having trouble unboxing

  • You alway have your batter running out. =p You sure you just didnt know how to put the board back in and paused the video.

  • @EmG007007 haha i was thinkin the same, LINUS WERE ALL LEARNING ITS OK TO MAKE MISTAKES =D

  • doing it outside makes it boring to YAY!

  • shit...

  • NIce. do something crazy. like 24 ssd raid 0 and see how fast you can go lol. win 7 install in like 5 seconds.

  • 8:21 Look to Linus glasses and you'll see cameraman!!!

  • Ill buy one of these. Perfect for my usage. Thanks for unboxing this case.

  • 1500$ raid card ouch!!1

  • double boxed... how do they work?

  • for me the fans should be the exact opposite they are. cus i think the 4 fans intake will suck hot air from the hdd and not push cool air to cool them. they air flow should be in the opposite action. or there is another choice. put fans in the side of the hard drives. one sides suck air from outside through the hdd and the other side push it out! anyway nice product and good review. can't wait for the build!!!! ;)

  • i know what it is cus i saw the description before the video started to play! :P LOL

  • classical battery excuse

  • now rebox it and take it bake inside your office xD

  • Every time I see stuff like this I, for a short time, strongly consider getting one... then I realize my 2.7TB I have currently is still overkill...

  • Is it possible to get SSD cards in that case?

  • @Esymad Yes.

  • @pedro380085 haha okey ! :D

  • wow! nice to unbox something a bit special. Thanks for using mirror sunglasses too, we could get a glace of the cameraman for once :P

I wonder what kind of power supply would indeed be required to run such a system, maybe not that much because you are probably not going to throw a gtx480 into a system like this one.

I love your outdoors unboxing! nice to change locations but maybe this one wasn't really adequate to unbox such a monster. Take care :D

  • Battery Ran Out... AGAIN!

  • Here's a tech-tip for you Linus.

Maybe you shouldn't unbox stuff outside in awkward environments without a proper table to unbox upon.

  • that is hardcore lol

  • How convenient your battery would run out when you're having trouble putting something back together :P

  • Do I smell giveaway! lol

  • stop with the outdoor unboxings

  • @vacklinge Why?

  • $392.33 for that RPC-4224 at the ncix website

  • Does your battery or memory run out on like every video or what.

  • Damnit! I really wanted those 10 POINTS!

  • So if you installed 24 3.5in drives into this case, what kind of a power supply would you need, including all of the other hardware, assuming that its all high end?

  • I hate how he calls the second generation of SATA "SATA II" and the third generation "SATA III".

I've always called the the second generation of SATA "SATA 300" because the data rate was 300 MByte/s and the third generation was 600 MByte/s.

This is just as confusing as the Rambo movies.

There's "First Blood" (Most People just call it "Rambo"), "Rambo: First Blood Part II" (most people just call it "Rambo II") and then came "Rambo III" and after that the fourth movie was just called "Rambo".

  • @commodore256 It's 300 Mbit/s and 600 Mbit/s.
