I believe Linda Blair was not chosen because it turned out Pazuzu's voice was dubbed by Mercedes McCambridge (who went through shit to get that rasp), not Blair. They therefore decided the performance was not entirely hers, which probably cost her the Oscar. Tatum was good in Paper Moon though, I guess it's just less well known than The Exorcist!
I believe Linda Blair was not chosen because it turned out Pazuzu's voice was dubbed by Mercedes McCambridge (who went through shit to get that rasp), not Blair. They therefore decided the performance was not entirely hers, which probably cost her the Oscar.
Linda Blair did not win because it leaked to the press that she was doubled in the film, and another actresses voice was used (Mercedes McCambridge). Also, too many people felt that slobbering on a bed was not their idea of dramatic acting.
Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen this clip and I think my heart just broke because Linda should have won! She's totally my inspiration for me wanting to become an actress. She's the best!
Ok... Correct me if I'm wrong... But shouldn't Linda Blair be nomeenated at the best actress category??? Who was she supporting in the movie? The devil himself???
@JulyN78 Lol! I suppose in some respects she was playing a supporting character to Ellen Burstyn's Chris O'Neil and of course Pazuzu (who unfortunately missed out on a nomination).

And as always, "Mother make it stop as I scream MMMMMMeeeerrrrrrrriiinnnnnnn from my bedroom because Burke Denning's gonna die up there all for not helping an old altah boy, Fadduh"

i actually live in the house that Tatum O'Neill did before she became a star. Tour busses sometimes drive by and one time when I was washing my car they asked if I was her son....
Her grandmother made her cut her hair for the awards ceremony. Tatum didn't like for her hair to be that short. She was made to have it cut short again when she was an Oscar presenter at the age of 14.
I was so wary watching Paper Moon knowing she had won an Oscar. I was worried that she didn't really deserve it, but I was very happy. She was incredible and funny. Really, a great performance for anyone of any age.
The old man was her grandfather - Ryan's father. Her father was too jealous of her being nominated to attend (although she gave him the Oscar and it's still in his house) and her mother had lost custody of her years earlier. A life both charmed and terribly tragic.
No. Ryan O'Neal was in Ireland filming 'Barry Lyndon' and Kubrick is a VERY demanding director, and would not let O'Neal leave the set for two days. That is the real reason on why Ryan O'Neal did not attend.
I do not think you can really speak of an child actress. Kids just act naturally. Are what they are. Just kids behavior. It probably comes more natural to them. Kids shouldn't be actors anyway. Look at what happens to the most of them. Misery, wanting to grow up too fast, alchol and drug abuse.
Tatum, when you get so upset about the things your stupid-fuck father has done over the years, you give the man emotional control over you. This is the rule: Don't have resentments because they emotionally enslave you to people who do dumb things.
I think Tatum is now a wonderful person, especially as she has managed to turn her life around after so many battles. She never had a normal childhood and her father was horrendous. Best wishes to you Tatum.
And to think that just a few hours later when she got home and showed Ryan O'Neal her trophy he BELTED her; or so she claims in her autobiography. Considering the nut job we all now know he is ... I tend to believe her. Also, there was no excuse for him not being there to see her accept the award in the first place.
aw he's so handsom and successful for winning such an honorable award at such an early age! I bet Tatum grew up to make a lot of women swoon over him!
Doesn't matter who wins. It's the role and the film that's remembered forever. The Exorcist to this day is still the scariest Oscar worthy film...and Linda Blair was part of it. The Exorcist was her statue.
Paper Moon? A kid whines and acts cranky throughout the film and it's a cute break through, Oscar worthy role? Like we don't see that everyday?
A possessed kid that spits and curses at doctors, now that's acting!
Cute girl. Shame she had a scumbag of a father who helped fuck up her career and life. Turns out letting your kid do dope and having sex with their best friend isn't such a good idea.
I'll admit that I did wonder about the tuxedo, but after reading some of the comments there's no need to ask a stupid question like that. Tatum O'neal was an absolute cutie, and the tux contributed to her look along with the haircut. She stood out compared to the poser girls of today who get updos and in appropiate ballgowns. Plus, she definitely deserved that award. Cheers to the youngest actress to ever receive an Academy Award for supporting actress!
@EmeraldCelebi13 Tatum has said that she was trying to imitate Bianca Jagger's look, and that's why she wore the tuxedo. It was the fashion, and she was a little girl trying to dress like her father's girfriend (Bianca).
@coolcanadiandude They could as well have nominated "White Fang",Silver Cheif","Rin Tin Tin", "Lassie" ot "Big Red".I got to this page through another film, don't own a TV,watch this hype but as an over-opinionated effite snob I reserve the right to blab my glob.
i think she was cute. unique and original. not all little girls have to have long hair and pink dresses. and her performance was superb in 'paper moon'. she deserved it.
linda blair's role scared me so much, i didnt sleep for a month, and i have anxiety and panic attacks all the time. she is the true winner of that oscar.

@djcruzify According to AMPAS, Hollywood rules, best actor/actress is main character {is in most scenes, has most speaking lines, usually is on covers of posters, premieres}. Ellen Burstyn got that nomination because she had more lines, scenes than Linda Blair.

This award should have been handed to Linda Blair. Her role in "The Exorcist" was both frightening and superb!

Sorry, but Kahn deserved it lol
She deserves a posthumous Oscar for her contributions in a time where women were thought to not be funny unless they were being housewives.
She was rather bold in her comedy.
And a good deal of Linda's performance was done by another person (the voice), so I don't think she could qualify, but she still did a fantastic job.
