I have been visualizing this type of steering, but now I see that it already exists and that it has a name:"Whipstaff." Very nice arrangement! My idea, originally, was to plant it forward in the cockpit to allow for steering while sitting underneath a hard dodger.
For your upper seating position, have you thought about rigging some type of canvas chair for better comfort?
