I first heard this while looking at the west emerald mountains of Maui from a small house half way up the crater. It was an old LP and headset. I was helping out a friend. Wow. What a tune.
Gabby can also be heard on one side of the amazing Chicken Skin Music lp/cd with Ry Cooder. The equally amazing Tex/Mex accordion player Flaco Jimenez is on th other side. Great collection of songs also. To my ear best heard on LP.
Ohhhhhh....love this! Back in the day we were lucky to be blessed with music like this and the amazing talents of so very many musician's like Gabby. Miss this kine music. Hawaii still is the birthplace for an abundance of talent and music, yet, we hold onto this music that just flows with the soul of the islands.. Mahalo GrandMasterGuess!
My mom lived and worked at the Hotel Hana Ranch on Maui in the 60s and 70s, before I was born. This was one of her favorite albums and this one of her favorite songs. She's gone now, but every time I hear this song I think of her.
My parents used to play this on vinyl when my brother and I were babies. I guess we were two if it came out in 75. Must have heard it a thousand times growing up! I loved this song and always remembered the lyrics. Now 35 years later, I actually found an import cd, and gave it to my Mom as a Mothers Day present. Should have seen her face!
after my visit to oahu my son gave me a gift of iz CD and an assortment of other hawaiian musicians and i discovered this song (a big favorite of mine). After listening to iz on you tube for months, i am also finding many different artists here now. thanks for posting from your personal videos and collections. bless you and long live hawaiian culture!
I had the great joy of being at Peter Moon's house with Pops and Bla when this song was released. It was a memory I will always hold close to my heart.
mann...the music, the lyrics, the videos brings me back home to the good days. i'm born and raised in Kailua Oahu, and hung out in the country side "windward" right?
Wow this song reminds me of back home Hon HI!Now I'm so home sick it's not even funny!I hope to move this year is year is my year! It's been time for this Pretty Wahine to go home!
Hawaii no ka oi. I miss the islands so much, how good to listen to the old guys, bringing up da kine, the vibes, making you feel you were there...mahalo nui uncle Gabby...
Bla did an awesome version of this on one of his solo albums, I seem to recall it was a live album. He told some funny stories about his younger days when he played with Gabby.
High, My friends wrote this song. Don't get me wrong, I will name them. Carlos Andrade, Pat Cockett and Boogie Kalama. These are Kauai people. If Gabbie if/was still alive he would agree. So don't mess with the truth. If you choose to, then go through Vinny O'Obrien that's O.K.! Hey, aloha! Bra........
Magic times for me - in Navy - submarines at Pearl Harbor. Got to meet Gabby once - such a nice man. Also his sons , who I met through Peter Moon Band - saw them MANY times. Like I said "Magic" times.
I've got an old lp of Gabi and the boys doing this song and a number of other songs and chants with Ry Cooder from back in the late 70's or early 80's...bought it in the PX at Pearl, man I miss the islands...we have a song here called "My Island Home", its about the islands north of Darwin, but it reminds me of Hawaii, I'm homesick for Makaha Beach and the Fog Cutter
I lived on Maui from 1980-1984 and Oahu from 1984-1992..then on to the mainland...this was my favorite song from the show Hawaiian Sunset....I have been checking utube for years hoping to find this song by Gaby...mahalo nui loa....
Bla Pahinui has one of the most unique voices and guitar styles. This is a most excellent song, and always makes me think of Bla. As you can tell from this album all of Gabby's keiki have choke talent. Its in the koko.

Choice! We're in Cairns. We have Uncle Seaman Dan, and the Mills Sisters up here.
Was talking to a Fijian lad the other day, have this old LP of Sonia and Skee- Skee can sing! More on the line of Stevie Wonder tho.
