20 years ago (I was a university student), I saw "Brazil".
I must have seen this movie a gazillion times since.
Anyway - this very day, I decided "I want to be like De Niro in this movie: I want to be a technical guy, someone that makes things works", I want to be... an engineer.
20 years later, I am an engineer "making things just works".
Sometimes, I fix the aircon, and sometimes, I connect shit pipes to some guys.
After watching Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, hearing him talk with an english accent feels weird. I guess he pulled off the gruff New Yorker really well.
Robert De Niro wanted to be in this movie from the beginning since he first found out about it from the producer, who also worked on Once Upon a time in a America previously (also with De Niro). the producer wanted a big name actor in a small supporting role for Brazil, and found out De Niro was a Monty Python fan which gave him more incentive to join the film. In a way, Brazil helped De Niro. At the time, he was looking for work that would prevent him from staying typecast in mobster roles
@desotowrong The suits exploded as soon as the sewage reached the top of their heads. They wouldn't have 'drowned' in it, they would have simply stunk of it afterwards.
"This is an H2206, authorizing the compulsory, temporary requisitioning of this flat for unnecessary repairs!" "Don't forget your receipt!" Those Moonsuits look really warm and fashionable except with the sewage going into them. The form 27B~6 is hilarious also. You should also see the part where, when the totalitarian government takes her husband away to his death, they say to the widow "Here is your receipt, and here is my receipt for your receipt!" or something like that.
This bit's really funny and the funniest part was when Terry Gilliam's daughter says "Put it on big boy. I won't look at your willy!" Does anyone know how he got her to say that? ROFL!!!!
Yeah and they wouldn't get away with it today. Gilliam said in an interview that it took a lot of coaxing by Mrs Gilliam and many takes/bribes to get the little girl say it. Would probably be called child exploitation now.
You've got to feel sorry for her. She was saying something she didn't understand and she was with strange people (the crew) and in a strange place. I heard she hated it and had tantrums and stuff to get out of filming.
But like you say the end result was brilliant and always gets a shocked response from anyone (myself included) seeing that scene for the first time. I was like "Did she just say what I think she did?". And Jonathon Pryce's horrified expression (filmed separately) was just priceless.
This is a "guarded" video. =p

@jbmaillet This was my first DeNiro movie and I thought he was the coolest, most heroic guy ever. Then I saw Taxi Driver.

So I guess Tuttle never existed, and the main character did all those things?
hankaaron1961 1 year ago
@hankaaron1961 Tuttle did exist, but in the end he imagined him in the last sequence he was in.
