Ερυθρός in antiquity is indescriminately applied to light-brown mid-brown hair as it is also seen being applied to other things that were clearly brown. The word for colour "brown" was often replaced by Greeks as the word red.

Ερυθρός in antiquity is indescriminately applied to light-brown mid-brown hair as it is also seen being applied to other things that were clearly brown. The word for colour "brown" was often replaced by Greeks as the word red.

No, this was done in Middle East were Greeks went as conquerors. And there was no come back of course, these Greeks remained there and were integrated in the long run in the local societies (and Middle Eastern did not become any blonder due to mixing with Greeks!!!!)... perhaps you want to call Greeks mixed with Turks? @notgodsemigod Apparently not. Well the reality is that Greeks mixed largely with their Thraecian neighbours who were people anyway very close to Greeks (spoke para-Greek languages, eg. Phrygians, Moesians...). And from there on with Latins and Franks and Goths and Slavs who are all blonder... if antyhing modern Greeks should have by any chance become slightly blonder than ancient ones.
But Greeks remain Mediterranean people with South Italians (area around Napoli) as their closest relatives.

Mediterraneans are people of so-called white skin but who get tanned easily without getting so much red as northern Europeans. Their colours are mostly black and dark brown hair and dark eyes. There exist Mediterranean blond which is of course light brown hair. Nordic blond and red hair are extremely rare and often sign of non-local ancestry.

I remember only Achilles and Oddyseus having blond hair BUT Oddyseus in Oddysey appears with black hair! Spain is a big land and there lived many tribes, among them Celtics who were more fair skinned. Iberians were NOT Celtics, they were a local stock (just like Basques), Mediterranean. Celtics were known to have come later either in late 2nd or early 1st millenia B.C. Spanish today who are coming from the ancient Celtic lands are STILL blonder than the rest.

The statues you mention don't prove anything and certainly aren't axioms, and often depict people who written roman sources describe as light featured and fair haired, Augustus Caesar amongst them. The mosaic of Alexander is based on one by Apelles which Plutarch criticises for browning and darkening Alexander's features, who he says was 'fair and of a light colour'.

Slaves came from all over the empire, and as citizenship was extended the slave owners came from all over the empire. The Romans were most interested in Gauls and Germanic people as soldiers, hence Augustus' Germanic bodyguard, and Caesar as described by Suetonius brought Gauls into the senate, and the high status of the Batavians.

After describing the Greeks as a race of people with big brown-black eyes, black to brown hair with big heads and big noses (we have other things big too by the way...) and defining it as the race that exemplifies human intellect he contrasts it with the northern blond/red hair races....

Aristotle was indeed a racist, he thought all non-greek peoples were barbarians, no special mention of a mediterrean race in his works, or a Greco-Roman race, and certainly no appreciation that things such as writing developed in the Middle East.

Of course it is a fantasy race, Calabrians and Sicilians have much in common with the Greeks but the Romans were more distant and Northern italians still more, its a fantasy of bigoted convenience, that ignores all Europeans are very closely related and much of the time national and ethnic distinctions are rather arbitary.
