I always remember this performance and Pete Shelley's bum wiggling on TOTP when he turns round, very sexy man, whether he is bi-sexual or not, I wouldn't like to hazzard a guess.
@Feisty1967 for god's sake, pete shelley made a small FORTUNE being uncomfortably northern and 'gay' in the period 76-86...every song he wrote makes hints about his sexuality (what do i get?) and his devotion to early bowie and lou reed. it culminated with 'homosapian'...if he isn't gay (and he wasn't blessed with physical beauty, let's face it) - then he certainly made a reasonable living pretending to be. i doubt he got any offers, though, in the narcissistic world of 80s club culture.
Geez, its claimed Teenage Kicks is the best song but i love listening to this more. Although I think Teenage Kicks is probably the better song, I think this is much better to listen to - go figure and help???
I'm pretty sure Pete is bi ... I suspect when Howard and he were living together in the early days of the Buzzcocks ( Boredom era ) that they were LIVING together, though neither has ever confessed to the arrangement. If you look at very early interviews with Howard from Magazine days, he is camp as a row of tents. Not that it matters, just my 2c from being a Magazine/Buzzcocks fan from day 1.
Actually, Pete Shelley is married to a girlfriend of mine from highschool. Whether or not he's bi, I don't know. But he's not gay. Ran into them yesterday. And they're very happy :)
@Docas633 Great 1980s band from Minneapolis. If you dig the Buzzcocks you'd probably like Hüsker Dü. Check YouTube for "Hüsker Dü - Makes No Sense At All". Great stuff. Three man band, two of whom also happened to be gay. didn't make the music any less great.
@callipposhots You obviously weren't around back then :) It was NOT about making a masterpiece in composition. We had grown up listening to the Sweet, Suzy Quatro, T. Rex and the like, were bloody fed up with elder brothers telling us you had to be AT LEAST Robert Fripp to pick up a guitar and your band should be called something like "Metaphysics in jeopardy", first LP called "Variations on subliminal prose"... and here comes a band of smurfs YOUR age, they play what everyone can play...
I agree with you but simple fact is it's not as good a song as it seemed when I saw it on Top of the Pops aged 9.
the point I was trying to make that in about fifty years, somebody will play the Beatles She Loves You and then this, and it won't sound that much different. Follow up She Loves You with Holidays in the Sun or God Save the Queen or Anarchy in the UK, and it will.
@callipposhots no, I saw "Venus" by the Shocking Blue when I was 9, and it looked magic. BECAUSE HECK I WAS IN A MAGIC AGE :))) Now it looks for what it really was: bubble gum. Obviously it really depends on what you compare things with. Most punk bands have no melodic roots, they are either derivations of the Stooges or (even more often) of the Slade. And if you take a couple of steps back you can repeat the process with the Stooges and the Slade. So yes, different roots, but roots anyway

music is not bad but not great - future generations are just going to think they're a poor copy of the Beatles. So much for the punk 'revolution'.
the Sex Pistols, on the other hand, you would never think were a copy of the Beatles.
