I'm from Turkey and yes İstanbul (Constantinople) was Byzantine Empire yes Greeks have history there but we too (Turks) have history there after 1453 and all history our because we are world the not turks not greeks not americans not italians... we are the world THIS HISTORY OUR OWN HISTORY!! ALL CITIES OUR LEAVE THAT F..KING RACISM WE ARE BROTHERS AND SISTERS THIS WORLD FOR ALL PEOPLE NOT JUST FOR A FEW...
and LISBON ? lisbon was the 1st city that was a capital of a global empire the 1st european city to suffer a earthquake that destroyed the city and the 1st modern city after the quake
uppsssss first St.Petersburg is a quite new city which was made as a model of Paris in Russia. And how can Istanbul in 9th place. There are 2 most important cities in the world Istanbul and Rome.Because both of them ruled the world for many centuries and all nations wanted to have them.and about Athens if we talked about the classical ages yes it can be first but in 2th century it can find a places maybe in top 10 but exactly not the first place
If you are just going for old, most of the cities on the list fit pretty well, but if you want the most volume of historical events, London belongs on the list. From pre Roman times to present, constant site of important historical events.
I'm American, I visited Istanbul in summer of 2009. It needs to be in the top 3. Anyone who has even dabbled in History knows of the great Constantinople.
@5kjkj Emm do you know what world war 2 is. The Russians nearly destroyed berlin in world war 2 and their are many historical world war 2 buildings in berlin like the Reichstag. and Dublin has loads of old buildings in parts of the city and bullet ridden buildings from the War of Independence.
Berlin, Edinburgh, DUBLIN? PRAGUE? None of those can possibly be in the top 10 historical cities on earth. Off the top of my head (just in europe) here we go: Rome, Athens, Paris, London, Venice, Constantinople/Istanbul, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Vienna, Madrid.
whilst No Rome -> No Europe and no idea of UNITED Europe. Go study history, my friend: Greece has invented an IMPERFECT democracy, Rome has perfectioned it, inventing the current form of govern.
@ranucciman1 you got to be joking me right now!! OK I admit tha Italy has a great history but nothing compares to Ancient Greece, Athens in particular!! Tha city of democracy, education, philosophy and more and more... Am I wrong?
and wtf athens number 1 ?? heheheh noob greek who put this video
you people dont even know something about history. number 1 is istanbul no doubt about it . 2 is jerusalem and 3 rome. athens maybe number 4.. but absolutely not 1
@ysmzysmz and why not number 1 for Athens. Just to remind you tha Instanbul is in fact a stolen city! INSTANBUL WAS GREEK!! And then, some ''clever'' guys with no civilization at all broke in and destroyed everything. Sooo, as you understand you do not have to be proud of Hagia Sofia because it is also Greek but you just put a pair of columns and called it a mosque! Well Done Then..
@tzortzini123 wtf are you talking about? who says I am proud of the hagia sophia. If you know anything of the city you would know that the hagia sophia is not the only building there.
have you forgotten about iran? the oldest country in the world with over 3000 years of civilisation? and why is cairo behind st petersburg? no sense...
@Ma010S I agree, this is a video about the oldes cities. but i must say Turkey is an older country than iran, and was older populated than iran. the hittite empire were before the persian empire. But i understand if most of the people who are reading this dont know anything named ''hittite empire'', thats cause its older, and empires dont got that big at that time :). And its hard to say if athens came before than istanbul, cause on official history websites it says they both are at least 3000BC
I agree with Athens, Jerusalem and Rome taking the top spots... I've visited all three and they are truly breathtaking (and so are the other 7 that are listed here of course). I still feel that that Edinburgh is a little undermined... it's rank should be moved a little upwards, I mean, the entire city is built on two levels and there are castles everywhere. Also, where are London and Paris? If I were to bring up cities from East/South Asia as well, that would perhaps entail another debate...
Dublin? Edinburgh? Berlin? I'm sorry but I think you're wrong. What about Florence, Venice, Naples, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Pekin, Granada, Seville, Siena, Paris, London and much more historical cities?
@Trigoth the netherlands have never been bigger than occupaing some very little islands, indonesia, suriname and south africa. you call that big? don't vompare your little country with a country like great britian. look at the ottoman empire or hunnic empire. then you'll see what is big. if amsterdam were a trade capital, how about istanbul then?
By the way, If you were going to upload a video including the cities that have "the most history about them" you had to add Damascus: the oldest city of the word; Naples (3000 years old), and so on, but I don't think Jerusalem to be better than Rome, I was there and I was amazed!
I would do something like this: 1. Rome, Italy 2. Athens, Greece 3. Constantinople, Thrace, Turkey 4. London, United Kingdoms 5. Alexandria and Nile Delta 6. Damascus, Syria 7. St. Petersburg, Russia 8. Venice, Italy 9. Sevilla, Spain 10. Paris, France
@GrandeurFrancaise I can't agree at all. Rome had about 1 milon people in ancient times (Abstrat of The population of ancient Rome. by Glenn R. Storey. HighBeam Research. Written 1997-12-1. Retrieved 2007-4-22.), and Athens hadn't only 1000 peopla (it's rediculous), Athens had about 300.000 - 700.000 people (Encyclopedia Of Ancient Greece (ed. by Nigel Guy Wilson). Routledge (UK), 2006. ISBN 0-415-97334-1. Pages 214, 215.)
Turkey is not nice and ive been there. i agree with Scotland . In this video ive been in Berlin, Istanbul, St. Petersberg, Rome, Jerusalem and Athens. and (i don't care whoever don't believes it.
-where china syria india and iraq these are some of the oldest civilizations not europe china invented paper compass and europe was still trying to figure out how to make meat cooked without burning themselves
I was wondering as I saw Berlin, because I think that gaerman has got more historical cities than that, like Aachen (Aux la Chapelle), Nuremberg, Cologne...
@GrandeurFrancaise The capital of Treviri was Trier, and the name has celtic origins. Treviri was not a city but a tribe. The people claimed germanic descent. Also, is has nothing to do with Cologne, I can't understand why you have mentioned it (Cologne).
@spartandescendant If the video was named "Ancient historical cities" it should contain more cities from greece, the roman empire, egypt, china persia... The thing is that the video is called "Historical" in general. Of course the medieval is a historical period, but in my opinion not as historical as the ancient. I miss Efesos, Pella and Sparta :) And Istanbul should called Constantinople in this video 'cause that was the name of the city until 1930. Cya
@ichalkias13 Further, I think that the uploader would name his video "Top 10 Largest In Present Historical Cities Of The World" because that's exactly what we see. Best regards :)
Haha, i dont agree... because, have you ever thought about Copenhagen DenmarK? Thats one of the most historical city/country in the world! And i wonna bet. Seriously...
I agree with these cities being historical, but you forgot cities like Paris, London, Barcelona, which were the capital of the three largest empires... also Beijing and Mexico City (before known as Tenochtitlan). but apart from that good video!

When people put their title as "top 10 cities" or top 20 this and that...it doesn't help when they don't a brief explanation by what criteria are they based on. "Top" or "best" are so arbitrary, dubious, ambiguous without further explanation. By historical, if you mean by how ancient the place is and how intact it still is(as some have modernised their ancient cities), then there are many places more deserving than most of those you put here. And there seems a certain bias for european cities.
@rolo12347 hehe thanks very much, you will love Puerto Rico, the same to you, I see you are from UK and some I will visit it too one day , great country =)
well europe also had towns 6000 years ago. The neolitic towns. It is known that the first civilization (urban towns with laws, organized structure, etc) was Mesopotamia, located in what is now Iraq.
Where are Baghdad, Samarkand, Bokhara, Makkah, Madina, Dehli, Multan, Demuscus, Hebrun and so and so......and why Dublin, Scot etc......I do not agree with you dear, any how thanks a lot.
