I feel you on this. My whole family and friends call me white, but I'm Mexican. It does get very aggravating, because I feel like I'm not american enough for the americans and I'm not Mexican enough for the Mexicans. I completely agree with everything you said. I have always attended a predominately white school. Black girls in particular would always ask me "why do you act and/or talk white?" Just because I speak with a larger vocabulary and pronounce my words correctly. I have even had family members ask the same questions. What exactly is acting black or white? Just because I don't fit the stereotype for a black person it doesn't mean I'm acting and it doesn't make me any less black than the next person.

A lot of people think that a person's ethnicity should define who they are as a person when this couldn't be further from the truth. A lot of people think that a person's ethnicity should define who they are as a person when this couldn't be further from the truth. It's the environment that you grow up in that determines how you act when you're older. Me, for example. I'm a Puerto Rican girl raised by a white family from Brooklyn. I went though the same thing as you except it was other Spanish People telling me that I "wasn't Spanish enough".

I'm black and I NEVER EVER seen the movie..."Boys in the Hood" NEVER. BUT I have seen about every Tyler Perry movie and play that was ever made. Why do many blacks feel the need to define their "blackness" off of these silly things? I been told I wasn't black enough because I don't watch what I guess a normal black person would watch, I don't talk with slang or Ebonics, I don't perm my hair, etc, etc...But I don't care. They are thoroughly and completely discredited by mainstream science. That's not to say that there aren't problems with mainstream science. It's just that all of these people you mentioned are wrong. I understand what u mean about not feeling "black enough" b/c I went to an all black grade school & predominately white high school & all my black friends say I talked "too white". Speaking intelligently should be a white or black thing, it should just be an intelligence thing. Both of my black children, especially my son, has the same problems and is constantly harrassed b/c of the way he talks & acts. He's highly intelligent & has a charismatic, thoughtful way of expressing himself. its sad
