Hauntingly beautiful song done perfectly by Tom Jones. Unfortunately it is a the sad lament of a death row inmate facing imminent execution. His last wish? To be laid 'neath the green, green grass of home. And in the end, isn't that really what we all?
I remember this from my childhood....a wonderful adaptation of a good country song. I dare present day singers to sing anything like this! Thanks for posting this and thank you Tom for keeping balanced through my hippy days, the Army, my country period...and endless changes.
Now this version has the sad part in it---you understand what is going to happen, and it adds irony and tragedy to the song--this last part is needed for a true understanding of the lyrics.
Listening to this song reminds me of my childhood days when I was learning my first few words of English in primary school. Didn't understand the meaning of the song then but I just enjoyed listening to it, even today. A beautiful sad song.
@mavericktom18 i'm happy 4 you your parents family & friends that you came back a life from afgan the soldier in this song also go back home but not a life i'm happy 4 you even i don't know you i started 2 cry when i was typing this :') the only sad thing i can link this song with was that i was in psychiatry 4 3 weeks but it was like a prison in there but when i came home again it allso feels great but 2 tuch the wooden floor of my room & tuch my x box 360 controller so i wish you the best luck
Reminds me of my old homeland of Wales (living in Germany now for 4 months). No matter where you live in the world, you'll never forget where you come from.

this is a bad idea of a joke given the mood of this song, but i just gotta mention......
Then I awake and look around me,
at the four grey walls that surround me
and I realize,
yes,
i can see those
i can feel those
i can see those
oh oh
