@MrCool621 It was drafting behind the airstream of the first car. When it pulled out to pass he left the airstream, so the air that would have been going over his car creating downforce, went under his car, and he didn't have enough downforce to keep the car level, so it took off.
You know that one in the olden days in black and white? The car crashed and flew into the bleachers? MY GRANDPA JUST MADE IT OUT ALIVE! He and his pilots friends had really good reflexes and ducked HE EVEN GOT A BURN! That shows how bad the crash was. And if you look in a book called 501 disasters if you look up 24 le mans he is right beside the crash with the fire!
@ThePureracing and qualifying. This actually happened 3 times in one race weekend with the same team. Qualifying, Practice, and the race. Mark Webber was the driver at the wheel in the qualy and practice wrecks.
No it was the Mercedes-Benz CLR. It was the prototype/LMP successor to the CLK-GTR. They look almost similar, but the CLR is much lower and sleeker than the CLK-GTR.
No it wasnt... why do people vote you thumbs up when you're wrong - the Mercedes raced for 1999 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans was a CLR !!! The CLK GTR was raced the previous year - 1998.
The main problem here is not aerodynamics, but the suspension setup. Mercedes had a problem with this the whole weekend in 1999. Absolutely unresponsibly to start with this problem...after Webbers crash in WarmUp they had to retire their cars from the race. Glad nothing bad happend to the drivers...
Not enough front down force, while moving within the slip-stream, the flow of air resistance isn't much (well, that's why he's in the slip stream in the first place, to gain speed), but when he moved out of it, the speed that he gain from being in the slip stream is being countered by massive amount of air pressure, and because of lack of front downforce, the wind lifting him up, and backward. Nice clear vid!
no, the mercs aero setup that year created a pocket of air under the car. So when he came out of the slipstream, his car was hit by a ton of air, which pretty much made a giant air pocket quickly, blasting his car upwards
Look this observation : At 0:09, is a Toyota GT-One and the crash car (Mercedes CLR-GT1). These cars are available in Gran Turismo (Ps1, Ps2, Ps3 game- Gran Turismo 1 and 2(Ps1), Gran Turismo 3 and 4(Ps2), Gran Turismo 5(Ps3).
I don't get it how did fly up
