Although the Western Flute can't achieve the same sound of a Chinese Flute, it can still play very well in Solo contexts, and can also achieve a wide variety of tone colours versus the monotonous tone of the Dizi.
I still agree however, that both Flutes are for two completely different things.
I wondering where can I buy this kind of bamboo flute??? There is an address or a telephone that we can contact with because we wants to buy one of these flute.
@TheStonedSlackerNZ well dun fuck european flutes. it may be expensive but it can reach the extents which chinese flutes cant. try thrilling on a sharp note with a chinese flute n u will find its not possible anyway chinese flute sound is definitely more unique but if many were to be blown at the same time, it cant harmonize; european flutes can blend in much smoother than the chinese flutes.
First, you can't compare a chromatic, tempered instrument with an indigenous, modal instrument. The dizi is a simple flute, like the bansuri and irish flute. You cannot, in any way achieve the sound of bamboo on a silver flute. You don't "harmonize" in traditional chinese music. It's solo melody music. Both flutes are from completely different worlds and are for totally different things. I'm not going to try to play Bach on a dizi. Why would I? Enjoy them both.

@matterofthing40 THAT's my point. nowadays people are trying to play western music using chinese instruments AND even formed their so-called chinese orchestra
The difference is not only western is mechanical, uses buttons to cover the holes, chinese flute (dizi) uses fingers to cover.
the most unique point of dizi is that it have a additional hole which is covered with a membrane; this allows the flute to have a very vibrant and dynamic tone. When the come to lower notes, it creates a powerful vibration effect that have character and resonates close to audiences hearts (find it hard to explain, you need to experience to understand)
What's the tape for?

And you also can't deny that the Western Flute is many times more classier and people playing the Dizi look like hobos. Sorry but it's the truth.
