Oreste Kirkop - The Voice Of The Vagabonds

does anyone know if Oreste married and had children? I am doing my family tree and he is my 2nd cousin, however I live in Australia and am finding it hard to get info on him.

Kirkop shouts his words too much. He doesn't seem to realize that this song needs to be sung, not yelled. And that's not his real speaking voice. If you notice, his accent is thicker when he sings than when he speaks.

The Vagabond King was a box office disaster. Lanza wasn't pulled from the film, he was considered for it but that's all, nothing more. Oreste Kirkop was a half-average tenor, nothing more. I'd have liked to have seen Lanza in a big budget film of the musical, sure it would have been a success

oreste kirkop at the height of his peak in opera singing and even hollywood could'nt resist his incredible voice which seemed to be a challenge to the italys mario lanza.so he managed to make one movie 'the vagabond king which is a remake of the early one.it has remained a treasure to the maltese as it's unique.his voice has made the maltese proud and a praise for malta too.years back malta post in oreste's honour had made issued out a tribute stamp towards the maltese tenor..viva oreste kirkop!

i still believe that if lanzahad to do it, ...he wouldn't have done it as good. lanza is raw power, but no matter how much of a lanza fan you are, like i am, you have to admit he lacks technique

Mario Lanza is often criticized for singing in an over emphatic manner. He was known for adding extra punch to the lyric line on occasion.

But good God! Kirkop can't sing three notes without adding extraneous emphasis. He has no line at all. Its as if he underlines every word.

He makes Lanza sound like the soul of restraint.

This movie's not too bad doubling up as an operetta and a swashbuckler. Oreste is bad but one can only imagine how much better it could have been with a Nelson Eddy or a Gordon McRae in the lead. Love this number though. The non musical with Ronald coleman was also very good.

Just bought this film to compare it with the Jeanette MacDonald version. Although I don't like Kathryn Graysons voice as much as Jeanette's...Oreste is 100% better than Dennis King in looks, voice and acting ability. Thanks for a very rousing clip.
