That's a nice sound! And quite an expensive guitar me thinks...
For those who are confused about the tuning, there are actually two versions Fahey recorded; this one, done in Open D on "Fahey, Kottke, Lang" (1974) and one in Open C on "Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes" (1963 &1967). The "Death Chants"-version seems to be the more definitive one.
I knew it. This was a closing song in a movie (only saw the last two minutes), you could tell right away it was a really good song too. Had me guessing this was the tuning which was a cool feeling.
I just saw Jack Rose live and you two remind my of Fahey's rhythm. Also the 'metalic' (I'm ot a musician so I dont really know how to describe it) sound you have is the closest I've heard to the Fahey recordings I know.
Thank you for the comment. As for the metallic sound, part of it is reverb from the amp, and I think I was also playing it through a chorus pedal, which puts a little waver in the sound.
hey man this is absolutely amazing. I'm trying to play this myself and I'm new to this style of playing, any tips on how to get that rhythmic thumb down? it seems impossible to me but you seem to do it beautifully. Thanks in advance and great playing, i thoroughly enjoyed listening to you
Thanks for listening. As for the thumb, just practice doing an alternating bass alone, then add the high strings after you've done the bass pattern a couple hundred times or so.
Fahey played it in C tuning. The string buzz is minor and if you think it's too much then slide your right hand back and it will give a tighter feel to the sound of the strings, thus ending your "buzz."
he's playin in open Db

Superb effort Stonewart. John Fahey would be proud. Love the sound you've produced. What make is the guitar?

@MP60 Thanks for the comment. The guitar is a Taylor, model 815c I believe.

Nice! But yes, Fahey plays it a step lower. CGCGCE, second position for those interested. Cheers.

Has a strong Jimmy Page feel to it.

It was in the movie "Dogfight" with River Phoenix and Lilli Taylor. It played during the credits at the end.

Nice.
Most Fahey covers sound like the player is on Prozac. You have an ear and a hand.
Congratulations.
Thanks for posting.
By the way, have you hear the album "Volumn 4"
I noticed on wikipedia it's not listed. I have it have the cover framed. The album is safe.

Fantastic technique and a very good acoustic tone. A big fan of Fahey, I've been learning a bit of his stuff. You are quite good.

Great song! where did you find the tab at?

Just Google John Fahey tabs and click on the first link. YouTube doesn't allow URLs in comments, as far as I can tell.

I Saw Fahey in 1975 - he was ill, but tried like hell to get through the show - a real pro.
