ChemistInJapan, thanks. I am Japanese and watched lots of video on Japanese racism and feel sorry for some foreigners who got bad treatments.
But I have a question why lots of foreigners excluding ChemistInJapan have the idea that Japanese racism is very bad? My Impression from those videos is that it’s not worse than others, maybe average or less, maybe different.
Then why so many videos on Japanese racism? Isn’t it a stereotype made by perhaps media bias toward Japan?
If you were a person and he were a pig, I would choose to be a pig, because he is much more intelligent, caring and thoughtful and has found a purpose of life. Very humane.
Sorry this is not convincing at all, is Japan the only place where foreigners not speaking the language want to rent a house. NOPE!!!! In my country if you refuse to rent to a foreigner because he's foreigner the government is going to give a huge fine. That's called discrimination, you can rationalize it all you want because it prolly makes you feel better about your living condition, but that's not gonna fly with anyone having a working brain. Bullshit, my friend , well spoken bullshit.
I'm a Japanese, but I cannot rent an apartment in Japan alone because I am a freelancer with an unstable income, but if I bring a guarantor, I can rent an apartment. The same applies to foreigners.
In your country, apartment owners always lease their apartment to any foreigner even if he/she has not secure job?
Japanese culture despite all it's magnificience IS a racist culture, I guess it's because despite their cultural greatness they're all too aware of their lack of beauty. I mean look at an ugly asian and there is a good chance that he is japanese. Heck even their women are the plainest in the area.
@shoshenkis now that my friend is racist, and generalizing have you not heard of the yellow fever? there are whites literally running at asian girls because they find them attractive.
Racism in Japan and especialy tokyo, many of my friends and present teachers in Tokyo have related it to me may times. You just can not deny it. It realy goes against your credibility. And we are not talking about apartments.
I think the Japanese in a way have a right to this. They are allowed to do this even though we are against it. We can't stop racism. Japan is a wonderful place and we can't discriminate all Japanese for this. If they want to reject us then the lose out on our money. I live in the US and I want to live in Japan and I hope I can. I have met a Japanese guy before and he was cool. I want to touch on this a little because not all Japanese are racist. We can be racist so can everyone else not just th
I've personally been said no buy an individual for an apartment, even though I spoke japanese and had lived here for a while. It did surprise me, because I'd heard of it but it hadn't happened to me. Then I offered to have my japanese girlfriends parents as guarantors, which was the magic word. spent succesfull 6months in that aparment and left a happy apartment owner behind :)
@howiseethings also please tell me reasons why Japan is racist.. NOT the "foreigners are not aloud" here and there because I already know exactly why they are not aloud there. thanks

@howiseethings totally false... how come when I was in USA I hear people talking nasty things about asians and other races? most people already know america is the most racist country in the world... not everyone but most. Japan may be racist like any other country but at least we welcome foreigners with respect. We enjoy new culture. In USA there are many races already living there so technically no one cares if there is another chinese or Japanese foreigner there. thats why

japan has a problem with racism. The difference between racism in japan vs. Western countries is that japan prefers to ignore the issue or divert attention away from themselves.
@howiseethings america does too.. even though I look american many people are still racist. yet they dont tell everyone the correct news on the media.. but of course this is my opinion.. your opinion is yours.
@howiseethings In addition to the communication problem that Mr. ChemistInJapan explains on this video, there have been unlucky cases in which foreign tenants took off without paying the rent. How do the apartment owners in your country protect themselves from the situation of unpaid rent especially when they leased their property to foreigners? We'd to learn from the examples from other countries.
@wakarai09 Hmm, wow. That was really lame. You pathetically tried to divert attention away from racism in japan. The problem is that many japanese have a problem with racism in japan toward non-japanese. This issue is about racism in japan. Stay on topic.
@howiseethings I'm not diverting attention, but trying to eliminate the problem by learning from the experience of other countries.
I presume that the property owners of your country must be free from fear that their tenants coming from foreign countries may take off without paying the rent. So, please tell us how the property owners in your country are protected from unpaid rent? Japan should try your method if it is applicable to Japan.
@howiseethings Did you really watch this video? Play it from around 1:35, "One of the things that you mentioned was foreigners being rejected for leasing the apartments and houses. And many, many people use this as an example of racism in Japan, and I just wanna give, ... I wanna counter that. I feel like I need to counter that somehow and give a different point of view of that. ..."
"Foreign diplomats and embassy staff in Britain have escaped prosecution on 21 serious criminal offences by claiming diplomatic immunity.
They have also run up debts of £1.5 million in unpaid rent and parking fines, and the offending nations include France and the United States." (by MATT NIXSON, Mail on Sunday)
@howiseethings if you niggers don't like it, then why the fuck are you here? Would you like some muslims to go into your country and force it to adopt sharia law? niggers like you bitch and complaint, let me guess japan has no free welfare, chicken, or watermelon system? OMG they're racist. Dumb niggers need to get back to your ghettos and die
Japan has welfare and about the same problem as yours too.
"Under Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare rules, foreign residents with valid visas are eligible for welfare assistance. The 48 Chinese nationals visited the application window for welfare protection an average of eight days after receiving their visas. Some things reportedly struck city employees as odd, such as the visiting applicants being accompanied by the same particular real-estate agent. "
@heythia Hmm, too bad for you I am not a "nigger". All people who live in japan who are not japanese experience racism. Clearly you condone such actions.
Maybe you should live in japan where you can be overtly racist just like your racist heroes. Oh wait a minute that wouldn't work cuz then you would be a victim of racism in japan. Strange how racism works eh, heythia.
@howiseethings so you're a nigger lover. Let me guess you like lynching asians in your country but become horrid when it's asians treating you the same way. Ok nigger I get it, you want rights and to be treated fairly but you're never going to do the same. Just like a nigger
I know not all, but some black people in the U.S.A play the racist card very easily.
Korean people are very much like that. They don't want to stay in their own country. So, they move to Japan, U.S.A., and other western nations and start playing their racist card if they can't get a preferential treatment for being so rude.
If Japan's problem with racism were so serious, I wonder why Koreans wouldn't return to their own country.
Great video. A breath of fresh air on YouTube thats for sure. Ive only been here 8 months, but Im really sick of all the negativity from foreigners. Its hard to find a good group of friends who don't constantly bash Japan. I cant say every day has been awesome, but my experience so far has been nothing short of amazing.
I think the attitude of japanese landlords is perfectly normal. My farther owns a ton of real estate in Germany. We don't rent to people wo don't speak german too. For the same reasons.
As restrained and internal as the Japanese are generally imagine whats going on in their heads. They even break social taboos to snap at foreigners. A lot of Japanese are constantly boiling with rage at the mere sight of a foreigner lol.
(Nothing to do with the video, just like to share)
When I went to go visit my family in Taiwan, I obviously look like a foreigner, even though I am full Taiwanese. The way I speak, the way I walk, the way I dress is different than everyone else. So, they would think that I couldn't speak Mandarin (which I'm not fluent in) so they would speak slower with hand gestures. I guess it would be courteous to let the other person understand, but they should really assume I speak Chinese.
@boxEEbby Please try to stay on topic. But under Chattle Slaver whites raped, lynched, sodomized (we are now called) African Americans and robbed them of Liberty, Equality and Justice and basic Human Rights. Sad to say some have learned how to steal and worse from those evil doers who did all the things listed above, but to ban a whole race of people for the action of some is racism. Think about it!
Nihon no kokoro and Joge Kankei is the way I would try to tell someone what Japan is. One heart (groupism) your group vs my group/ the in-group and the out-group but if you are Japanese then you belong to the bigger collective(kyodo). Joge Kankei is how one acts within their group to someone Sr. or Jr or at the same level. As a gaikokujin(gaijin) you are not of the greater collective so race does play a role but culture plays a larger one, so I humbly think.
Regardless of race, Japan is so strict on leasing apartments.Even we,Japanese need to come up with a guarantor and get a regular job before we rent an apartment.
@boxEEbby Wow! Speaking of being black… did you know that there’s only two kinds of people in this world?? “First are AFRICANS… and the rest are descendants of AFRICANS! People, like yourself.
Now when you get tired of playing around on the computer… go over to You Tube… and watch “Journey of Man!”
The ChemistinJapan guy was justifying Japanese people banning foreigners because "foreigners break rules".
I was being sarcastic using the same situation with blacks. Blacks make less of the population but have more crime rate, so using his logic, this guy shouldn't be angry if white people all of a sudden banned blacks from coming to their stores.
@boxEEbby Wow! Speaking of population : Global White Population to Plummet to Single Digit—Black Population to Double The 21st Century is shaping up to be the status reversal of whites and blacks and the Indian baby boom As a percentage of world inhabitants, the white population will plummet to a single digit (9.76%) by 2060 from a high-water mark of 27.98% in 1950.
This video is BS. My girlfirend works for a real estate office. I don' t feel the racism because I make over 100,000 dollars a year.....we don't have racism. The racism exist among middle class or lowers class residents. I really hope you can understand that. I have been on both sides of the fence. My2 cents.
An educated, thoughtful response to someones video and a very balanced, intelligent view on the subject of racism in japan.. I agreed with everything you said. I believe the vast majority do have the wrong idea of what exactly racism is and just tend to jump to this conclusion when someone is not nice to them. too many people just pull out the racism card way too often and eventually they really do run into a racist who hates them and that just confirms there sad beliefs and outlook on life.
@Firestormify Have you ever been to Japan and Japanese people treated you badly? No, right? Don't worry, Japanese people would treat you as good as you guys did in Greece.
make a video about Japanese wannabee in Japan. We'd like to see that. And stop being fat. Damn it. It's irritating just looking at your face. How do you expect people to watch your video?
nah, i'm not buyin this because if they have never met the foreign person s/he can't assume that they cannot speak japanese and a lot of times that is the case. and for every foreigner that acts stupid in japan there can be 10 videos that show japanese act even stupider. but if a foreigner is at century 21 talking japanese to a broker for an hour then calls up the building owner then gets told that they wont rent to foreigners..no excuse!
The idea that the actions of some non-japanese allows the Japanese to label an entire class of people with the same attributes of that one person is outright stereotyping if not racism. "You cant do anything about it" - I suppose the government could create anti-racism/discrimination laws that were enforced? Its obvious that they don't care about it or maybe this is their way of a look-the-other-way approval of whats going on..
you also need to look at it thru the perspective that, say a foreigner signs a lease for a year or 6 months and then they decide that japan is not for them and they up and leave, which is the case quite often, leaving the landlord in the hole for the remainder of the lease, damages and removal of any items left. i can completely understand reluctance to rent to foreigners.
Well what if your a foreigner who speaks japanese fluently meaning you can read and speak and write the language can you make a stand and say I prove to you I can live here just as good as any japanese person I sure would. Soo desu ka.
There is also foreigner liability...I can just pack up and gtfo whenever I want and not pay the rent. That's also a possible fear a landlord can have when dealing with foreigners.
chemistinjapan- BAAAAAAAADDDDDD video. Uncle Tom comes to mind. The renting of an apartment example is PATHETIC at best. I know some people in Toronto who continually rent to immigrants who can barely speak English. Sure there are problems but nothing that patience, reasoning and gentle care can't cure. Something that the japanese SEVERELY lack. People like you shouldn't be making excuses for japanese racism.
Chemist, you explain the reality of Japan, as well as clear Flip's name all in one video. That's noble and mature of you, great job! Welcome to my subscriptions. You have lots of knowledge about the society apparently, and I hope to learn more from you later on. Take care.
You say "there is also racism in America" as if to somehow diminish, or justify Japanese racism. There is also sexual slavery in America too, although not to the same extent. Would you aythat sexual slavery is ok in Japan because it happens everywhere? Why are you so agressively trying to defend Japanese racism?
Being originally an imigrant in USA and now living in Japan, I have a different view on things.
My personal feelings about Japan is that there is racism here but there`s also racism in USA - the way it is expressed, though, is a bit different.
At the same time and as you said, there are good points about Japan.
For me personally right now I might not be 100% happy with life here, but I have a decent paying job - which is something that for now would be difficult to find in USA.
If foreingers are so bad, as you and the Japanese media try to portray us, why is it that the homeless weave through crowds of Japanese, to ask me for money? Why doesn't he ask the very kind, very not-trouble making Japanese?
You sound just like the house slave of the plantation who use to say "don't cry about it, just deal with it, pick your cotton, and shut up"
4. Japanese cause trouble in Japan too. And there are a hell of a lot more instances of it per capita, than foreign-caused trouble. Just read the newspaper.
3. I lived in Japan for 6 years, and did not have to "communicate" with me more than 3 times. So, I cannot imagine that it should be
Would Japanese people feel surprised, hurt, or offended if they were refused an apartment in France, the US, Canada, or Germany for the reasons that you gave? Would they accept those reasons as the truth?
2. We foreigners, um, already know how ot "live". We actually have practice "living". It is very slightly different in Japan but we are capable of learning the differences. Just as the Japanese are capable of learning the differences when they move to another country.
You tell some of the common lies that Japanese, and their foreign lap-dogs tell.
1. My friend Shota, went to my country and did not speak ANY English. He did not even finish high school. He went to a small town in the middle of the US. There were not many foreigners iving in that area. He searched for many apartments. I asked him how many times he was refused for an apartment. He answer was "zero".
So is Japan. The current Mongolians, Koreans, and Chinese who now call themselves Japanese immigrated to Japan and stole it from the Ainu, the caucasians who were here before.
@ChemistInJapan ok u have right but i have seen some shops that they have signs not allowed foreigners but i have seen them in google and youtube so i want to know where to go USA or JAPAN. you look like a wise by the way that you spoke so i want to know your opinion if you dont mind
I think that if foreigners just took the effort to learn the language most of these issues would not be. If you can just communicate and rationalize, have friendly real conversations, the Japanese wouldn't feel intimidated and barriers would be lowered. And even if that fails, it's really no big deal because I can't blame them for feeling that way due to others who ruined it. I know I wouldn't like foreigners if they didn't respect my country.
@ChemistInJapan i have the sense that japanese are being more discriminated against than dishing it out. it's quite sad to see, even though im not japanese myself, how they are being traited and insulted by westeners even in their own country. cos i know no immigrant in the west who critise the society without feeling an underdog at the same time. Its like we from the west in japan are allowed to get so comfortable that we slams their way of acting just out of boredom, spoilness,or superiority
@CadaverousWound (I can speak conversational Japanese... I've experienced this myself in Japan) The barriers really fall once you show them you can speak Japanese. If you can act Japanese too, then you'll advance to a new level of popularity beyond that, but in short the only Japanese people who are actually "racist" are usually not worth your time because they tend to behave in a way that other Japanese people may not necessarily enjoy their company with either... just food for thought.
I really like this video. You didn't attack the original video that was made, you simply made your rebuttal and supported it with factual evidence, and quite logical evidence at that. You are perfectly right, and you seem like a very nice person. ^^ I really like your video.
Thanks. This is almost a non-response in the fact that I knew going in I had no chance to change the person's mind, so why try? Hopefully this put a little different spin on an all too often cited case for injustice.
My question is how you solve this problem. If an landlord has someone who doesnt speak a word of English and cannot reject, there will be a lot of problems.
@RantsofOtaku He hasn't given ANY factual evidence nor logical evidence -- which are the same thing, you small-minded bigot. I feel the need to say this. If you think the use of big words or simple punctuation makes you anything more than a mindless burk; it does not.
Besides that, very nice video. Very interesting. Very thorough.
I totally agree with you. It's not so much racism, it's more the lack of communication that the Japanese want to avoid. I made this point on another video where they were showing signs on bars that did not want Foreign visitors without a Japanese escort. Perhaps these signs could have been worded better but that is what I got from my time there. My time in Japan was wonderful.
its there country if you hate it so much and the racism there then dont go living there move to the US and do what you like most.Read some history about them and why are they are racist. towards foriegners..Remember thats there country not yours to begin with.Dont force yourself to make them see. That is impossible.
as much as i agree and understand what you say in your video, i also disagree, because foreigners who do speak japanese and understand (or want to try to understand) the rules, probably also get rejected. not just appartments, but pubs etc. as well. if they can prove that they understand japanese there should be no reason to refuse them at all.
At least they are discriminating. They reject all foreigners equally. I have a real hard time justifying the denial of the right of refusal to private business.
When it comes down to it, what is the problem? Is it, man that's an awesome apartment and I really want to rent/own it? Is it, he wronged me and now I must have revenge?
In my mind, if someone were to deny me for an apartment, so what? On to the next. I wouldn't want to live where I wasn't wanted to begin with. Pick your battles
well, you can move on to the next if you like, but i would like to make a big deal out of it. because if i spoke proper japanese and understood the rules, i would feel very insulted if i were refused entry.
Why would you feel insulted? That's the question that I just asked you didn't answer. What's the problem? It's just an apartment. Why do people make such a big deal out of not being able to live where they weren't wanted to all?
You feel insulted? So what? Get over it. Life moves on.
Pick your battles carefully for the war is long. Don't sweat the small stuff. I'm sure there are other cliches I could put here.
There is no logic behind your argument. Just irrelevant feelings.
i actually did answer it. i said that i would feel insulted because i could speak japanese and would stick to the rules, which is exactly why they would refuse foreigners in the first place, because they 'assume' that foreigners don't speak japanese and only cause trouble. but if they do speak japanese and won't cause trouble, it's insulting to refuse them. now i'm not just talking about places to live, but about that type of attitude towards foreigners in general. not all foreigners are bad
You feel insulted? That's the result, not the reason. You make a false assumption that Japanese ability equals commons sense. I got a bucket full of examples where that ain't true.
You're right. All foreigners are not bad, however, the number that are is a lot bigger than those that aren't.
You still didn't answer my point about living where you aren't wanted. Why do people want to do that? It boggles the mind.
Mole hills should not become mountains. That's just personal choice.
the reason i would feel insulted is because...(fill in what i've said earlier), ok?
i just gave you the reason why.
i think it would be wrong to label most foreigners as bad. don't forget that one black sheep makes all the other sheep look bad, which is a pitty.
my point is not so much about wanting to live somehwere where you'll get refused, but the attitude that they can't make a distinction between good and bad people.
The Japanese media exaggerates foreign crime because it sells. They play upon the stereotypes that the bigotted Japanese already have. One woman is raped by a Marine in Okinawa and it is an international incident, with 10,000 people surrounding the base.
Moer than 100 women were raped by Japan's best and brightest young lads, in their Superfree rape cult, and the incident was forgotten about before the newspaper hit the coffee table.
(con't) Besides the apartment though, I don't feel I encountered negative racism in Japan. The vast majority of Japanese people were incredibly kind, helpful, and friendly, often going way out of their way to help me when I needed it. Sure, some kids stared and pointed, but I just waved and smiled, it didn't bother me. And I didn't see people shy away from me on the train... it was so crowded many times, there was nowhere to get away to. My time in Japan was very positive, overall.
(con't) If I had an apartment complex in the US, and couldn't say "I won't rent to non-Americans because I just assume that I can't speak to them, and because they don't know how to live in a civilized country like the US... why, they're liable to start a cooking fire in the middle of the living room!" That would be considered discrimination, and quite probably racism. I agree with you about being flexible and taking things in stride. That's what I did, I stayed in that apartment for 2 yrs
(con't) Anyway, I only met the manager of that apartment complex once in my 2 years there. Rent was automatically deducted at the bank, and if I had any problems with the apartment, I was told that I'd have to deal with it myself (luckily, I never had anything major happen, as I had no phone number or way to contact him if it did... he didn't live in the apartment.) While I can understand the reluctance to communicate in English, such an excuse simply wouldn't be acceptable in many countries.
(con't) The entire building shook and the doors rattled whenever a train went by, about every 30 minutes from 5 AM till midnight. It was apparently one of the only places in the town that would rent to foreigners, mostly because if it weren't for us, he'd have few if any tenants at all. I wanted to move, and my supervisor tried calling several places that had giant "Apartments available" banners up, but they all refused to rent to a foreigner, even with my school vouching for me.
I wanted to reply to your host father's comments about foreign renters in Japan being denied an apartment not out of hatred but an unwillingness or inability to "deal with" foreigners or talk to them. I experienced this same problem when I was living in Japan for 2 years as a JET. I was in a small city (50,000) in the Kansai area. As a JET, I inherited the apartment of my predecessor, but it was very small, dirty, overpriced, and right next to the train tracks to Osaka
Good for you man. People who look for racism see it everywhere, and in everything. My favorite gaijin racism complex is the "Japanese won't sit next to me on the train" one. That one kills me.
I agree with a lot of points that you made. When you are in Rome, do as the Romans do, so to speak. :) You just have to do your best to adjust to life and make the best of every situation. I've even come to believe in this in everyday life. You just have to make the most of what you have. If someone has a preconception about you, prove it wrong. Show them how great of a person you are. That's fully what I intend to do. :)
I agree with all the things you've said! Being in a different culture and different country is all about give and take. So many folks don't realize that things are indeed different here. people think differently and act differently. If someone from the States or Canada wants everyone to act like they are from the States or Canada...they should stay there!!
I like your input on this, I'm sure it will help some people. Its definitely easy for people to jump to bigoted hasty generalizations that reinforce their own ignorant views by self-righteously claiming that their subjective experiences and perspectives are virtuous and somehow held to a higher standard. In this case, its racism against foreigners In Japan. I agree language barriers are a huge hurdle to overcome and can cause a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty for both parties involved.

@howiseethings In addition to the communication problem that Mr. ChemistInJapan explains on this video, there have been unlucky cases in which foreign tenants took off without paying the rent. How do the apartment owners in your country protect themselves from the situation of unpaid rent especially when they leased their property to foreigners? We'd to learn from the examples from other countries.
wakarai09 2 months ago
@wakarai09 Hmm, wow. That was really lame. You pathetically tried to divert attention away from racism in japan. The problem is that many japanese have a problem with racism in japan toward non-japanese. This issue is about racism in japan. Stay on topic.
howiseethings 2 months ago
@howiseethings I'm not diverting attention, but trying to eliminate the problem by learning from the experience of other countries.
I presume that the property owners of your country must be free from fear that their tenants coming from foreign countries may take off without paying the rent. So, please tell us how the property owners in your country are protected from unpaid rent? Japan should try your method if it is applicable to Japan.
wakarai09 2 months ago
@howiseethings Did you really watch this video? Play it from around 1:35, "One of the things that you mentioned was foreigners being rejected for leasing the apartments and houses. And many, many people use this as an example of racism in Japan, and I just wanna give, ... I wanna counter that. I feel like I need to counter that somehow and give a different point of view of that. ..."
So, I'm staying on topic of this video.

Must be pretty common.
"Foreign diplomats and embassy staff in Britain have escaped prosecution on 21 serious criminal offences by claiming diplomatic immunity.
They have also run up debts of £1.5 million in unpaid rent and parking fines, and the offending nations include France and the United States." (by MATT NIXSON, Mail on Sunday)
wakarai09 2 months ago
@howiseethings if you niggers don't like it, then why the fuck are you here? Would you like some muslims to go into your country and force it to adopt sharia law? niggers like you bitch and complaint, let me guess japan has no free welfare, chicken, or watermelon system? OMG they're racist. Dumb niggers need to get back to your ghettos and die
heythia 2 months ago
@heythia
wakarai09 2 months ago
@heythia Hmm, too bad for you I am not a "nigger". All people who live in japan who are not japanese experience racism. Clearly you condone such actions.
Maybe you should live in japan where you can be overtly racist just like your racist heroes. Oh wait a minute that wouldn't work cuz then you would be a victim of racism in japan. Strange how racism works eh, heythia.

heythia 2 months ago
@heythia
I'm not really sure of what you wanted to mean by "nigger," but if you mean a black person, howiseethings doesn't seem like one to me.
Most of the black people from America staying in Japan are U.S. military personnel and they have no need to exploit the Japanese welfare system.
If howiseethings won't answer my question about his ethnicity, then, he is most likely to be a Korean.
wakarai09 2 months ago
I know not all, but some black people in the U.S.A play the racist card very easily.
Korean people are very much like that. They don't want to stay in their own country. So, they move to Japan, U.S.A., and other western nations and start playing their racist card if they can't get a preferential treatment for being so rude.
If Japan's problem with racism were so serious, I wonder why Koreans wouldn't return to their own country.

1. My friend Shota, went to my country and did not speak ANY English. He did not even finish high school. He went to a small town in the middle of the US.

MrJuancarlosferrero 6 months ago
@CadaverousWound (I can speak conversational Japanese... I've experienced this myself in Japan) The barriers really fall once you show them you can speak Japanese. If you can act Japanese too, then you'll advance to a new level of popularity beyond that, but in short the only Japanese people who are actually "racist" are usually not worth your time because they tend to behave in a way that other Japanese people may not necessarily enjoy their company with either... just food for thought.

steba2006 2 years ago
as much as i agree and understand what you say in your video, i also disagree, because foreigners who do speak japanese and understand (or want to try to understand) the rules, probably also get rejected. not just appartments, but pubs etc. as well. if they can prove that they understand japanese there should be no reason to refuse them at all.
lullemans72 2 years ago
At least they are discriminating. They reject all foreigners equally. I have a real hard time justifying the denial of the right of refusal to private business.
When it comes down to it, what is the problem? Is it, man that's an awesome apartment and I really want to rent/own it? Is it, he wronged me and now I must have revenge?
In my mind, if someone were to deny me for an apartment, so what? On to the next. I wouldn't want to live where I wasn't wanted to begin with. Pick your battles
ChemistInJapan 2 years ago
well, you can move on to the next if you like, but i would like to make a big deal out of it. because if i spoke proper japanese and understood the rules, i would feel very insulted if i were refused entry.
lullemans72 2 years ago
Why would you feel insulted? That's the question that I just asked you didn't answer. What's the problem? It's just an apartment. Why do people make such a big deal out of not being able to live where they weren't wanted to all?
You feel insulted? So what? Get over it. Life moves on.
Pick your battles carefully for the war is long. Don't sweat the small stuff. I'm sure there are other cliches I could put here.
There is no logic behind your argument. Just irrelevant feelings.
ChemistInJapan 2 years ago
i actually did answer it. i said that i would feel insulted because i could speak japanese and would stick to the rules, which is exactly why they would refuse foreigners in the first place, because they 'assume' that foreigners don't speak japanese and only cause trouble. but if they do speak japanese and won't cause trouble, it's insulting to refuse them. now i'm not just talking about places to live, but about that type of attitude towards foreigners in general. not all foreigners are bad

I do believe that the people who complain about racism in Japan, cannot even imagine what its like here in America. Racism is EVERYWHERE
sk8tertater 2 years ago 3
Good for you man. People who look for racism see it everywhere, and in everything. My favorite gaijin racism complex is the "Japanese won't sit next to me on the train" one. That one kills me.

Yeah, I hate that one too. I thought about taking it on, but I thought this would be enough.

Oh no man, do it. That would be great!! Its a classic
