I heard an FM DJ in the '70s report this song had become an anthem among NYC junkies back then, as they viewed "Mrs. Jones" as a metaphor for junk.

I doubt the songwriter or Billy Paul had such an interpretation in mind, however.

But people, including addicts, like to place their own personal meanings onto songs. Of course, Lou Reed was direct & unambiguous when he wrote: "Heroin, it's my wife & it's my life!"
