'Dir' is 'you' or 'yourself' in German, not 'all' or anything else. From what I know, 'en' is 'and' in Dutch. And everyone know what 'grey' means. So, it could be 'You/Yourself and Grey'...

But, like they said, the name just might not mean anything...

Dir = coin, (German) en = particle (comparable to "of"), (French) grey = grey, (also spelt "gray")(English) Their name loosely means "Greyish Coin" I've also heard it translated as "two sides of a coin" but I've got no idea where that came from. I'm sure someone could do a better job translating the words than I, but w/e. Ask them.

well according to the band, the name isnt really suppose to mean anything. it has even less meaning to them now then it did when they first started the band.

"Dir" actually means you in German not coin. "En" means "in" in French. So it means You in Grey but as stefyend says it wasn't supposed to mean anything. They just liked the sound of it.

Dir could also mean 'All' in german. So it could also mean 'All in grey'. Only once did they say it would mean 'greyish silver coin' and I think it was Die. and if you read the rest of that interview, I'm pretty sure he was drunk. It was really ridiculous. But, point is. It means nothing, It's just a name that Kaoru thought up.

Actually the meaning of Dir en grey(contrary to the members stating in interviews that it has no meaning) is All in grey, meaning that there is no black and white in this world, nobody is 100% good or 100% bad.

True..but that is not their message their belief is to say that the bad experiences (black) in this world leave a deeper mark then the good experiences (white), and from there the lyricist kyo trys to create lyrics that  accentuate the various emotions coming from those "black" experiences. Kyo has said he has no interest in expressing the "White" howerver and never has,so I don't know why he'd agree to a band name with a more or less pleasant view on the world.
