Not the strangest costuming of Midsummer I've ever seen; that would be the one with Puck in red leather and a mohawk. But it's up there. Incidentally Green's getup here would have fit right in with the Rustics from that production
To anyone lucky enough to make it to the tiny Scritti shows in London this week... it was so wonderful to hear these Cupid & Psyche era tracks played again absolutely brilliantly. Green's genius is unique: it was a privilege to shake his hand after 25+ years loving this record.
Beautiful song, but jesus green what the hell are you wearing, a shell suit tucked in boots, the only thing you've ever done wrong. love the voice though, sounds like a draft under the door, but works lovely.
Nah,it was'nt filmed at the Scala....thats wrong Kitty,it was in Mile End....Sarah Gregory did the make-up (Glenn Gregory's Mrs,Heaven 17 etc),took 2 days to make this cack video but we got paid for it as we all worked @ The Fridge in Brixton, then were taken on as "extras" for loads of films afterwards when we got signed up with UglyAgency.....
This was actually filmed at the New Half Moon in Mile End. Check the fake poster on the intro.
A great day with a fine dj, the door whores from London's coolest clubs, and a bunch of the best street dancers in town. Shout to Jai and the Kryptic Crew for all the networking and ligging that came out of this.
Aldabra were a smart production company who got it bang on with this one.
Green is so cute in this vid - reminds me back to when I first loved Green & Scritti in the early eighties..... "where the words are Vodka clear".....
Nice to see all those club freak faces again, and door whores galore!.
It's kinda weird seeing us dancing to electropop, when most of us were into deeper US dance music.. That said, they were a very cool band, and Green was no stranger to the world of weird..
And yeah, I'm in it, but modesty forbids. This shoot saved everyone a lot of queueing and paying for a long time after..
This was filmed at The Scala in Kings Cross in 1984. We were all invited to a 'party' which turned out to be this video shoot...that's me twirling around at 1:33. Good times!
Classic time capsule of mid-80's fashion! Check out the guy in the rest room wearing the Body Map vest! I used to wear that stuff! Omgosh! Thank you for posting this video! I loved this song then & still do now! :-)
Ohhh....where have the times gone.. I remember vividly turning the volume WAY up while I was working in the supermarket's storage room in late 1984, taking an illegal break just to enjoy listening to this song. It was orgasmic, I loved it. One of those precious memories.....
Brings back great memories of June 1984, it was a glorious summer, and I was studying for my A Levels back then.
I remember using 1980's styled nylon shell-suits as pyjamas, and they were sooo very nice when worn in bed - the soft nylon lining next to the skin made me sleep very well!!!
@insomb ... it is, in a way, isn't it? That's one reason I like it. That "Absolute" that they're dropping into their eyes... kinda sinister on one hand, and symbolic, of course, on the other, as per the lyrics. I love it! Great imagery!
You just don't know - I LOVE THIS SONG! When I brought the 12" for Wood Beez, this was on the other side. I freaked! Ever since then, I've been hooked on Green and the fellas. I cut my chops as a DJ playing these records. Thanks! :-)
@Scottoftl I just looked at my comment, and I just realized that I called Kate Bush's album "House Of Love", and not the actual title "Hounds Of Love", LMAO!!!
Also, I should have included two other favorites of mine from 1985- Phil Collins' "No Jacket Required" and Paul Young's "The Secret Of Association". That's what old age does to you...makes you real forgetful, LOL!!!
@MyJunior1975 Feeling old doesn't begin to describe it. God, this album I played the cassette tape until it broke, then played the CD until it cracked. They just don't make music like this anymore!
@Scottoftl Actually, they do still make music like this. The problem is that it gets no support from the people- the very same people that demand it, ironically. More than likely, you'll find people that make music like this in the world of indie rock.
@kcaj789 Feel the same about the jogging outftit!!! BUT...LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! Especially that original SP vids are rare. Most of the Scritti songs we have here have a still image of an album cover for a ''video''.
A funny part: Maher & Gamson's typical white men dance moves.
Yeah, they have instruments that pretend keep them busy (which is a relief for our poor eyes), cos it'd be worst if they didn't and dance throughout the whole song. hahaha
@daypeshmodd ... Gamson is in the video, but he's not dancing. He's at the keyboard stage left. The guy in the blue cap (dancing) is not Gamson. And Maher isn't in the video at all.
When I say dancing,I mean little dance moves while playing to really dancing. U have no close-up of the band, except drummer & guitarist & there r a lot of look-alikes.Maher was drummer in the band, should be him at the drums, but the guitarist is his spitting image,so I thought''why not?''
Gamson is w black t-shirt sitting behind keyboard: 100% sure. Here I made mistake cos I recognized him but later in the vid confused him with mixer wearing jean coat.
@daypeshmodd ... Yeah, David Gamson definitely made distinctive moves behind the keyboards! lol.... He does this in "Perfect Way" and "The Word Girl" as well. He really feels the music, you can tell.
@Tre404 Had to cut out things I wanted to say. Have the vinyls from the time & lots magazines too.Know what Maher & Gamson looked like. The guy at the guitar looks so much like Maher, it's uncanny. Maybe he did play guitar:would have to look it up & even if I find nothing about it,I think it's still him in vid , besides everyone pretends to play. Agreed doesn't make much sense he's not at the drums.Gamson was never tall & skinny like other keyboard player. Which left do you mean? Ours? theirs?
@daypeshmodd: Stage left" is a theatrical term, and it's "our" right. It's left, to them, as they face the audience.
No, Maher didn't mime guitar in any Scritti productions. This is definitely not him (I don't even think the resemblance is close, myself; just my opinion)
I've most of the vinyl as well, from "Skank Bloc" on up. They're my favourite 'white' band, and what a vast palette of musical sounds throughout the years! I think "Perfect Way" is among the top 5 best pop songs of all time.
@Tre404 Sorry to reply for the 3rd time. But just did a search on Maher (don't just go on wiki, check the links & the links to the links). Maher does lots of things aside from being drummer, namely guitarist, programmer (what I called mixer earlier), producer, etc...
@daypeshmodd ... No sorries necessary! :) Sharing info is always cool. I do know about Maher's other activities (among my favourites is his production work for Kevin Paige!!) .... ANYONE involved in Scritti's works is awesome!
@Tre404 All is cool! Didn't follow their respective work after SP. Also have SBBologna(song only),but after that, have everything from SP except that despite all the many 12 '' I have, surely don't have them all.
Perfect Way IS a gem! Gamson: already told u I made a mistake,he doesn't move at all. Maher: we have to agree to disagree, can't help but think it's him on guitar. Is the comment fave ''white band'' litteral? If it's an expression don't know it.
Perfect pop song. Perfect vid. How did Green manage to mix it with the black Americans armed only with a shell suit that a scouser would baulk at? But mix it he did!
When did you upload this? I uploaded it a couple of years ago and tried since and Iw as denied. Maybe the clip is now officially allowed on You Tube. i HOPE it stays up this time around!!!!!
I am curious, however, as to what Green is wearing here. It says on the door at the beginning "A Midsummer Nights Dream". Is it going to happen in space, Green? Did David Bowie lend you unused costumes from "A Space Odyssey"?
@brianab31 ... it's a reference to a Shakespeare play, as is the donkey get-up at the end. And Green is wearing a Nike track suit, all the rage that year among black folks in the burgeoning international hip-hop community.
This is absolutely a classic! When I listen this song first time, I was so surprised the variety of the synth sounds and different echoes he puts into one short sequence.
me too have all his records on vinyl then just bought his cd with the hits on this is one of my faves he had such a distinctive voice, does anyone recommend his recent stuff?
