  • I still remember him having us look at the newspaper comics while he read them to us. Loved the guy!

  • I grew up watching Sherriff John... TWO THUMBS UP!

  • Sheriff John wished me a happy birthday, boy was I happy....then...now...not so much.

  • It was a great time to be a kid, thanks in part to what still remained of a better, more positive societal mindset. The Sheriff John Show was certainly one reflection of it. Thanks so much, Mr. Rovick, for the fun show, for being a fine role model and for the good, guiding lessons. God bless you, Sheriff John!

  • oh my god!!!! hello my name is David, and i know Mr. John Rovick, in fact i see him everyday at work , he has such a wonderful spirit and you can always here him singing, where ever he goes:D:D, it is so amazing for me to watch this video of him, and i enjoyed it very much, thank you

  • @eggers00; it's ironic that such a kind and pleasant man as Sherriff John had come from the experience of being a gunner on the famed B25, let alone having to have ditched it in the blackness of night. I built this Revell model when I was a kid because my B17 needed company. It is obviously apparent that Sherriff John has been truly blessed by God as evident by his caring nature.

  • @Bigstooler0, thanks for your response!, I stayed home from school frequently, being born a sick child, consequently watching alot of television.I might add that Sherriff John advertised the Maggio name using wooden alphabet blocks with the long green stems attached to the carrots.

  • My little brother and I spent our early childhood in the Los Angeles area watching Sheriff John... I couldn't believe it but I remember every single word of the "Happy Birthday" song! Good memories.

  • Omigod! Love you Sheriff John!! Today in my college Conversational Spanish class the assignment was to recall a fond memory of a t.v. show. Being one of the elder statesmen in the group, your show was my sweetest recollection and I shared this with the class. Even though I was not included in the birthday list, I was touched by your remembering kids and I imagined you were singing to me on the outside of the television. Muy bien!

  • The "Sheriff John Show" was my favorite show! Skipper Frank, Engineer Bill, and

Captain Kangaroo were all great shows. But I looked up to Sheriff John. He seemed like such a great teacher, he seemed like family.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHERIFF JOHN!!

  • Loved watching the "Lunch Brigade" before heading off to Kindergarten in the afternoon. I also would like to thank Engineer Bill Stulla, Skipper Frank, and Tom Hatten from the Popeye show which I was a part of. Growing up in East L.A. (no offense Cheech!) I also remember Pacific Ocean Park, The Nu-Pike amusement park in Long Beach and cruisin Whittier Blvd! Gone are the "Good Ole Days"

  • Happy 92nd Birthday, Sheriff John!!

  • As a blossoming gay boy, I always had the hots for SHERIFF JOHN...was it his UNIFORM??? Rovick was HOT regardless.

  • wow...I used too see and sit down for lunch with him (on TV or course) love this program..brings back many great times..simple times..dinner with the family, indoors by 6pm, in bed by 9pm..thank you..

  • Thank you for bringing back such happy memories.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! Today is my 56th birthday and I went looking for the birthday song to post on FB. I wanted to post something about Sheriff John so my non SoCal friends would know what it was all about. Watching this video brought tears to my eyes, he was a bright spot in the day for a lonely child with a difficult life.

  • This was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. Always listened to the birthday names as the highlight of the show. Sheriff John singing the birthday song is like hearing an old friend!

  • Thank you so much for this! Tomorrow is my 60th birthday and I would sure like to have Sheriff John mention my name! God bless that dear man. I saw him at a supermarket opening in person and I was stunned by what a great guy he was!

  • I watched the reruns in the mid 70's.

  • I remember that he plugged Maggio carrots.

  • @mistressofaminer I have mentioned that to a dozen "Lunch Brigaders" and none of them registered the reference.....I never had a Maggio carrot only because they weren't available in Riverside. I ate a carrot with my lunch as I watched the show and always envied those who could have the Maggio's while I had a placebo...

  • I also grew up watching Sheriff John. When it was lunch time my mom would sit me down in front of the TV to watch the Sheriff John Show. It still brings back fond memories. Trying showing this to your kids or grandkids they just don't get it. Thanks Sheriff John for all that you stood for.

  • put another candle on your birthday cake Sherrif John!

  • Sheriff John, I will always have fond memories of this gentleman and the wonderful childrens show he had. He taught me valuable lessons that have stuck with me my whole life, and made me a better person. Too bad there isnt programs like this anymore. L.A. in the 60s what a great time to be a kid. Heres a blast from the past, I remember P.O.P. and Wolfman Jack broadcasting on XERB.

  • @56kanaka I'll give a big AMEN to that ! it was a different time to grow up. I have so many wonderful memories of being a kid and Sheriff John is a just one of them I cherish to this day !

  • I remember watching Sherif John in the 60s!! its a far cry!!

  • Loved watching him every morning ! growing up

  • Happy 91st Birthday, Sheriff John!

  • Beautiful. What a lovingly produced trip down memory lane!

  • So how you forgot to mention those creepy "CLUTCH CARGO" cartoons where they had human lips moving through their sketched cartoon animations. Wonderful show. I still know all the words to all the songs & I am 55 years old. Thanks so much for this wonderful tribute!

  • Thank you for making this wonderful video of Sheriff John. I watched the Lunch Brigade in the early 50's from Huntington Park with my PBJ and Milk - What a great time. My favorites were the sketches from the doodles and Birthday wishes.

  • I woke up this morning with "Laugh & Be Happy" in my head, so I YouTubed Sheriff John, and found this and some others. What a difference from Saturday morning cartoons today! Ihave not had a TV in 15 or 20 years because poor programing. No doubt it was a kinder, gentler time, at least in So. Cal.

  • Dear Eggers00 - thank you so much for posting this video clip as it brought back many wonderful memories of growing up in L.A. in the 1960s. Sheriff John was absolutely magical and I remember sitting in front of the TV at noon every day and watching the show until the day I was finally forced to go to grammar school. What a great man! I will send him a birthday card this year for his 91st birthday! Bill

  • WOW!! Talk about bringing back some memories. I was lucky enough to have him say Happy Birthday to me...and hundreds of other kids

  • My mom sent my sister's name in for her 21'st birthday and Sheriff John read her name. Needless to say my sister wasn't any too happy.

  • Happy Birthday Sheriff John!

Never forgot those songs. I still think of them on every birthday. I live in NYC now and no one has heard them here. Thanks to utube I can show them and re-live the wonderful memories you made for so many of us growing up in Southern California. You meant so much to us. Still do.

  • If you're reading this, Sheriff John, or it's being read to you, Happy Birthday! And thanks for sharing lunchtime with me everyday. I'll never forget you and your wonderful show. Know that you meant so much to all of us and the impact you had on our lives continues to this day. God Bless You.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHERIFF JOHN!!

I grew up in Burbank, California, watching Sheriff John and Crusader Rabbit and LOVED that show!

    Thanks for the vid.

  • Thank you, Gene, for putting this video together and posting it. I lived about 10 minutes from my grammar school in Redondo Beach and would go home for lunch most days and watch the Sheriff. Youtube is in many ways our personal time machine. Without the Morlocks, of course.

  • Hey Sheriff John ..a belated Happy Birthday !

  • Happy Birthday "Sheriff John"Rovick..And God Bless You

    Dear Sir!

  • John you touched lots of us kids in a helpful way. I'm glad you were there. I hope you know how much love goes your way whenever we recall you on TV.

  • Glad to hear that you made it through all that, seriously.

  • I had a terrible childhood due to a very cruel, abusive father, but I was in heaven when I would race home from kindergarten to see Sheriff John. His lunch tray had a bowl of something on it and I'd never heard of anyone having soup with lunch, so I ate a bowl of cereal because I thought that's what he was having. My father wasn't home from work yet, so I felt completely safe with Sheriff John. I thought he was putting on the show just for me, and was secretly encouraging me to hang in there.

  • This show wasn't just entertainment for me; it was my lifeline to a brighter day.

  • @TVWriterGuy It was one of my lifelines too!

  • Never saw Sheriff John, til the miracle of this YouTube, and now i am a fan! Thank you for keeping the memory alive!

  • I spoke with John Rovick when I worked at kttv channel 11 1976-79

  • Happy Birthday John! We're neighbors now! Look for a comment in the Statesman "letters to the editor" section. we'll find Hobo Kelly and go out for lunch!

    God bless!

  • John D. Rovick was born in Dayton, Ohio (Oct. 2, 1919). During World War II in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and accepted into the Army Air Corp. As a Second Lieutenant, he was trained as a radio operator and gunner on a B25 Bomber. On one dangerous mission, his crew had to ditch at night off the coast of Italy. Rovick survived 50 combat missions. Discharged in 1945, he got into public radio and then television in Los Angeles (CA) developing the concept format of the Sheriff John show.

  • I remember eating my lunch as Sheriff John ate his. And he would always say his prayers.

  • Saying ones prayers....saying the Pledge of Alliegence, good manners ....they have all receded into the mist of history with Sheriff John. Sad. I loved that show and all that it stood for.

  • How could I ever forget Sheriff John ? He was an

example of the clean programing enjoyed by the children of Southern California back the 1960's......

I arrived in Los Angeles from Cuba in 1963, and

this program was a great help for me to learn

    English.....God bless Sheriff John........

    CM González, Age 56 ( 10 in 1963 )

  • This is great fun. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TO YOU, YOU'RE ANOTHER YEAR OLD TODAY!. I was just singing this to a friend who has a birthday tomorrow. Blessings. Think of you and SMILE. Glad you are still with us. Love You, Sheriff John.

  • FYI: A fellow YOUTUBE viewer recently sent me this mailing address of KTTV station where Sheriff John fans are sending birthday cards and letters to:

    "Sheriff John" Rovick

    C/O KTTV FOX 11

1999 South Bundy Drive Los Angeles CA 90025 .

  • @eggers00 Oh I wish I knew about this last year and now another year has gone by. I grew up here in Los Angeles watching the Sheriff John show. I will definately send him a card to KTTV next year. HAPPY BELATED 91st BIRTHDAY SHERIFF JOHN! WITH LOVE.

  • WOO-HOO!!!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHERIFF JOHN!!!

"Put Another Candle" has been the birthday song my family has used all my life.

Thanks, eggers00, for the wonderful walk down Memory Lane!
