  • Yeah, it's a wonderful car, alright, as long as there's no chance you'll get hit by anything bigger than a Siamese cat! No one in that car would survive a rear end collision with a snowflake! How can any sane human being pay $19,000.00 for anything that little?

  • gaycar is bay

  • put some oil in the oil filter before replacing

  • No, the FC is in the front, if you owned one, you would have known that....

  • when you were replacing the filter did you have to remove the "flux capaciter" pretty complex stuff if so?...hehehe

  • NO mitsubishi engine but MERCEDES BENZ engine :-)

  • @iPedle actually it is Mitsubishi :) the 451's have a strange combo... the engine is Mitsubishi and the trans. is Mercedes... i had to replace my engine on my smart :( now the i heard a rumor that MB is planning on putting their engines back into the 451's

  • smart oil choise

  • @zudoan - Bad oil choice. It's not rated for that car.

  • Why u didn't add any oil in the new filter..Can u say dry start???

  • The dirt that gets past the air filter, past the rings and the valve guides and into the crank case.

  • @amoswt - A lower performing air filter doesn't filter as well as a superior performing one of course. Any air ingested dirt that gets into the engine is filtered out by the oil filter.

  • @HiTechOilCo You have to change your oil every 3-4 thousand miles to get things clean. If it turns black its dirty.

  • @amoswt-In 25 + years of being in the synthetic oil business, I have seen scads of oil used oil analysis laboratory test results showing oil that was as black as night that was in fine shape. In diesel engines, new oil can turn black in a matter of minutes, but it's not dirty. If we cook a steak, it can gets darker in color, but it's not dirty. Engines have air and oil filters to filter out dirt. Take a look at the opening video on my channel, showing an engine that went 409k on one fill of oil.

  • Make sure to check that the old filter gasket came off with the old filter before spinning on the new one.Or you will spend the afternoon cleaning the driveway.

  • Wow, that oil filter is in a super accessible place. On my 2008 Civic SI, I have to reach behind, and around a bunch of stuff. It's a real pain. It's like they tried to put it in the most difficult spot possible. Some people even take their front wheel off on the passenger side to reach it easier.

    Consider yourself lucky!

  • atleast he is using good kind of oil thats what me and my dad use.

  • @SuperJuandude - It's a fine product, but it's not the appropriate oil for this vehicle.

  • @HiTechOilCo u are probably right this car has probably a special oil for it but we dont have one of these cars but good to know.

  • Thanks for the film as soon as my smart is out of warranty i guess i will be changing my own oil .

  • @1ADY - You can change your own oil whether your vehicle is in warranty or not. It's your car and you aren't forced to pay someone else to work on it. Your warranty will still be honored, as is required by law.

  • btw, youre pouring the oil wrong

  • real men use their hands to take off oil filters O.O :p

  • @RicerEater1978 - If, "real men", are determined by how they remove an oil filter, then they can't be men, as that's childish of course. :)

  • @HiTechOilCo XD real men arent determined by taking an oil filter off by hand, its just something they do naturally. there are 3 levels: boy, man, and chuck norris

  • Thanks man

  • My smart is 10 years old, done 81k on the clock and purs like a kitty, and its never had a single problem,

    ;-)

  • after all these years i hate that they havent placed the drain plug under the engine instead of on the side

  • ...oil doesn't meet those specifications. MB229.5 or MB229.51 is a European specification, ("MB", standing for Mercedes Benz). This grade of oil must be used in order to maintain the O.E. warranty. Using an oil not meeting these specifications can be cause for warranty denial. Make certain to use the proper recommended oil for long, trouble free engine life. I hope this has been of help.

  • ...fight this problem, always prime the oil filter with oil, (fill it with oil), to provide oil pressure to the engine as quickly as possible. By the way, it looked like the oil coming out of the engine was in pretty nice shape. 5,000 mile drain intervals might be tossing out perfectly good oil. Lastly and most importantly, Smart Inc. specifies only using a synthetic engine oil that is formulated to meet MB

Sheet 229.5 or MB Sheet 229.51. I went to the Mobil 1 web site and it appears this...

  • @Echeque5 I have never heard about priming the oil filter. But I will start doing it.

  • niinjoosum - To offer a couple of tips; first, it is always a wise idea to wear rubber gloves when doing an oil change. Used oil is very toxic and has many cancer causing agents in it. You an pick up a box of rubber gloves at an auto parts store for about $5 and potentially prevent cancer. Not a bad deal. :) When draining engine oil, the oiling system is devoid of oil pressure and the initial engine start can be a dry start, leading to greatly accelerated engine wear. To help...

  • you fill the filter about half full so you dont dry start your engine

  • Hey Vanslam, Im thinking on saving myself alot of money and just change my oil myself. Never done it before but this video makes it look very easy. Im worried that if I change it the oil, Do I still have to take it into a dealer just to have them reset the light?? It takes me a hour to get to the nearest dealer. Last time I went to get my oil changed and checked they charged me over $125.00. I was def pissed. So what should I do? Change it myself or just go to the dealer?

  • @KenDomenick5656 Change it yourself. Most cars owner's manuals will tell you how to reset the oil life system. And if not look around online to see how to reset the light.

  • @KenDomenick5656 - If you change your own oil make sure to use a synthetic oil meeting MB 229.5 or MB 229.51 oil specifications or engine damage not covered under warranty could result. This specification is per Smart Inc. Resetting the oil change light should be covered in the vehicles owners manual. It's a simply procedure. $125 for 3.5 quarts of oil and labor? (cringe). Always ask for a price quote before authorizing any repairs on your car so as to prevent being ripped off like this.

  • @houston7544 Maybe those people should think a little. I've seen my share of 'fender benders" and well this little car has done a great job at protecting occupants, contrary to what most thing about it based on its size. This book as a small cover and huge content inside.

  • thanks for helpful video, very clear instructions and easy to follow

  • Damn 3.5 qts my truck takes 15 qts

  • @MrBauer1992 3.5 qts and it lasts 10,000 miles. efficient well build little cars that don't waste valuable resources. I've driven my smart over 24,000 miles. Very reliable, never left me stranded anywhere. Check my channel if you want to see more. Please leave the negative remarks out. Thanks.

  • how come you have a mitsubishi engine on yours?? iv got a smart roadster and ive got a merceds engine on it..+ i have to pump the oil up from the dipstick (which suckcs)

  • @ganni003 mitsubishi is the engine supplier for the gas powered 451s sold in the US and I believe in Canada and Europe. They are a good engine.

  • Best Oil Change Video on the internet! I use Pennzoil or Castrol in my engine.

  • @dsouth01 - Make sure the oil you use in your smart engine meets Smart Inc. recommendations and is a synthetic oil meeting MB 229.5 or MB 229.51 or engine damage not covered under warranty could result.

  • 3.5 qts... that must be nice. My truck takes 10.5

  • @YamahaR62008Raven - With an engine oil sump capacity of only 3.5 quarts, when the engine burns off only 1 quart, almost 1/3 of the engines lubrication protection is gone. This is a common drawback with small cars.

  • @Echeque5 Im just saying from a price point, and if your car is burning a qt. or more before you need to change the oil then its done anyway.

  • @YamahaR62008Raven - I am seeing from the *cost point*, i.e. the cost of replacing an engine. Vehicle manufacturers consider 1,000 miles per quart to be normal oil consumption. It's just, personally, I don't find 3.5 quarts of oil much engine protection. There's not enough cushion there for my liking.

  • @Echeque5 Yes some companies say that is okay but really there wrong, they dont want to have to fix there cars . The only way that oil can be burned is past the valve seals or the rings. If your car burns any oil there is something that is not right.

  • @YamahaR62008Raven - All engines burn some oil. If they didn't, something would be very wrong with them. They burn oil by design.

  • @Echeque5 you really don't know what you are talking about. My vehicle has 170,000 miles and doesn't burn oil. Oil consumption is not "normal". Plus the amount of oil varies in accordance with the size of the engine. LOL!

  • @robison87 - An automotive engine is by design supposed to born some oil. If it didn't, the upper cylinder area wouldn't be lubricated and very rapid wear would occur. Some engines consume more or less oil than other engines do, but they all consume some oil. Some folks assume that since they don't need to add oil between oil changes that their engine isn't consuming oil and this isn't so.

  • @robison87 - If an engine didn't consume any oil, then the piston rings would be wearing out rapidly as they wouldn't have any lubrication in the upper cylinders. When the piston reaches top dead center in its stroke and then goes down, a thin film of oil is left on the cylinder wall to be burned in the combustion process. It can be a tiny amount of oil that doesn't show on the dipstick in-between short oil drain intervals, but all engines consume some amount of oil.

  • @robison87

Oil consumption is normal if meet manufacturer borders - this is related to design of the engine - some engines have "less tight" design - then they consume oil and this is clearly mentioned in manufacturer spec. BMW for example allow up to 0.8 liter of the oil to be consumed per 1000km.

  • great video! and by the way i drove my 2009 smart in the biggest snow storm of the season (so far) here in Buffalo ny ! it drives great with all season tires and would be a beast with four snows ! i manuvered a little less better than 4wd trucks with way more ground clearance and had a total blast doing doughnuts in unplowed parking lots ! Don't let the small size fool ya !

  • @smart9978 ya should have made videos... those of us in the deep south dont get to play in snow like that.

  • Dont just put any oil. Check your cars manual, it tells you exactly what to use.

  • I dont even have a smart car, but a few months ago I changed the oil in my Hyundai Excel.

This is a very good video tutorial, and covers everything!

  • I have a 2001 GMC Sonoma with a V6 and the drain plug is 15mm, but a 24mm Drain Plug for a Tiny Car, thats awfully Huge.

  • @EvilFingers i just cant beleive this guy is using a 1/2" drive ratchet on his drain plug... overkill?

  • @chancehall1

    I agree.

  • Great tutorial... pretty smart

  • I love it! Thanks for the easy tutorial. I'll be changing my own oil on our lil smart.

  • nice vid. though should definitely include to run the car for a bit before draining and should even run an engine flush.

  • 5w-30 same type as my car

  • An engine flush on a car with only 5000 miles? What are you smoking?

  • Many thanks I may even give it a try on my car in the future.

Watching it being done certainly gives me confidence in trying it for myself.

    Thank you

  • 24MM for a drainplug? WHAO!

  • WOW i thought the oil filter on my car was small....

  • @gecho82ss the stock one is small but there are a few alternative filters that are a bit bigger. this is only a 1 liter 3 cyl engine.

  • mpg?

  • @astroid911 36 city 42 highway.

  • you forgot to mention to fill the filter up with oil so you dont start the car up dry

  • @deathxe5 good point, rarely done, even in most shops they don't bother with this step.

  • lmao i saved a bunch of dollars. he sounds retarded

  • I am curious about how this car drives in snow or is it not recommended?

  • it drives like shit but its so much fun if you try to drift cus its so easy and the fact that it is real wheel drive doest help

  • I'm driving one in Canada in the winter right now, it's awesome in the snow, but like other vehicles its only as good as it's driver.

  • @cher8424

Its such a lite car being under 800Kg in weight that it can be a hand full in slippery conditions but its certainly safe to drive in Snow as long as you take care.

  • @cher8424 - How well a vehicle does in the snow or not is largely dependent on the winter performance capabilities of the tires.

  • good job man

    Tada!

  • just think your self lucky the europeon models dont have a sump plug you have to suck it out of the dipstick

  • Nice vid we took our 08 passion to the HBL dealer in Tysons for the first service .

    $388.00 for the SERVICE!!!!!!

    NEVER AGAIN

Next vid make one about how to reset the service interval

  • @compaq2441 if you have not found the answer to this yet there is a UK web site that is "evilution" point "UK" point "CO" they show how to reset the service indicator in both 450 and 451 models.

  • @compaq2441 - $388 for an oil change? Youch. Be sure to always ask for an price estimate before authorizing any repairs to your vehicle.

  • Great video! Thank you for putting this together. I viewed it several times before performing the "inaugural" oil change on my 2008 smart pure. Things went fairly well with no real surprises. One thing I learned: a 15/16 inch socket is the equivalent of a 24 mm socket; so I did not even need to buy a new metric socket for this oil change job.

On the plus side, Kragen/O'Reilly/CSK is stocking the replacement oil filter for $3.49 for their private label brand.

Hope this helps - and thanks again!

  • @TubeWrangler way to go! Makes a person feel good when they accomplish a task.

  • When you were at the store putting the box of oil/filter in the little car did the car have trouble hauling such a heavy load?

When you are driving the car and a bug hits the windshield does the car veer into the other lane?

When you fart in the car does the car float?

  • Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahaha.

good one. Wish I could rate the comments. 5/5

  • @kingmike40 Funny boy,

    NOT.

  • Pliers to take off the plug? Nice way to strip and destroy your oil drain plug. Do it the right way and use a wrench.

  • Thanks a lot, here in Hawaii I don't have a smart center or too many people who know about this car, so if I can do the basics myself it's will be great for my car and my wallet.

    Good job on that video.

  • is it impossibly difficult to take the drain plug off

  • @blahblah5492 - That is dependent on how impossibly tight the oil pan drain plug was tightened to, or not. :)

  • It is worth noting that warming the car up to full operational temperature allows the oil to drain more effectively and jacking up the front opposite side will help further.

Always refill the car on level ground.

Ideally you should replace the sump plug copper crush washer each time, the part number is SA018 997 44 45

The oil filter part number from smart is SA132 180 00 10

Doing this for your main first service will mean your service book isn't stamped, interim services are OK to do DIY.

  • Is there a small O-ring on the filter plug somewhere? I found a small (5/8") O-ring in my drain oil pan when I was done and don't remember a place where it was needed.

  • Yer - Thanks alot. I was gonna be charged £50.00 for an oil change/ filter but doing it myself was cheaper and I learnt something too. Thanks again :-)

  • My car has a little wrench synmbol on the dash read out. It came on at about 7,000 miles. We don't have a smart dealer here in LA. I have never changed the oil. I currenty have 38,200 miles on car. Do u think the light will go off if I change the oil?

  • I think the dealer has to reset the system to get rid of the wrench. But with 38,200 miles on the original oil I would say that is the least of your issues.

  • there is a smart car dealer in north hollywood on lankershim. although they charge $150 for an oil change. certain jiffy lubes, or quick lubes know how to do smart cars as well for around $60-$90. btw you desperately need an oil change given the milage and weather in LA

  • YIKES!!! Oil changes in Illinois are usually only $20. But economy is different there so...but wow...

  • @Neonspinnazz30 - $20 isn't a synthetic oil change though and synthetic oil is recommended by Smart Inc.

  • @Echeque5 True, the $20 is for conventional (don't like that stuff, but use it for the family SUV), forgot to price synthetic change...Still cheaper than the smart service center price...

  • What do you have to know to change the oil in a smart car? Seem straight forward to me. $150 for an oil change. Good profit margin.

  • @kingmike40 - An oil change is an oil change. It's basic. Do it yourself price should fall into the $40 price range.

  • @Echeque5 I get 6 quarts of fully syn moble 1 and a oil filter for 37 dollars. It really isn't that hard to change you're own oil. Get some one to show you and you should be able to do it you'r self. If you can loosen and tight and pour then you can change you're own oil. It only takes a couple of minute and saves $

  • @aqinthe - I've been in the auto repair industry over 25 years and have been changing my oil myself for even longer.

Smart Inc. specifies only using a synthetic engine oil that is formulated to meet MB

Sheet 229.5 or MB Sheet 229.51.and if you go to the Mobil 1 web site, you will discover this oil doesn't meet this specification. This grade of oil must be used in order to maintain the O.E. warranty. Make certain to use the proper recommended oil for long, trouble free engine life.

  • @Echeque5 So what oil would you recomend. Other than AMSoil? I looked at oil test and Mobile 1 tested #3 in almost all catagories. I just want to use whats best. I'm not set on Moblie 1. But I don't want to pay 10 dollars a quart.

  • @aqinthe - Paying $10 per quart is a lot cheaper than paying for a new engine that is *thousands*. :) I wouldn't recommend anything other than AMSOIL, as it is the best available and saves consumers so much money, especially at the wholesale prices I can get for you. Check my channel out and message me.

  • @FANADDICTSFIX - $60-$90 for a 3.5 quart oil change is very high. It should be about $50 with the proper meeting Smart specifications synthetic oil.

  • 38,200 on ORIGINAL oil? Ouch I feel bad for the smart. IDK if that's why the service engine light (wrench) is on. Dealer service should fix that

  • r @wmcs11 sweet god, you are as smart as to be expected from a smart car owner. Almost 40,000 miles on the original oil?!!?! If your engine is still running, you can consider it a miracle from God. Most likely the oil has hardened and destroyed your engine....

  • @logdon17 - A synthetic oil wont harden and destroy an engine, regardless of how many miles are on it. I use AMSOIL 0W-30 which has a recommended drain interval of up to 35,000 miles. I have 157,000 miles on my car now and it runs great and God doesn't care about my car. lol :)

  • @wmcs11 Wow,get an oil change. And no Smart dealer in L.A.?

  • @wmcs11

Jesus, 38,200 miles without oil changing is fuckin nuts. What the hell are you thinking?

  • @procaralho2 - 38,200 miles is easy when using the right oil and filters. Check out the, "409k Mile Oil Change", video on my channel. :) Using AMSOIL, I've been using 25,000 mile + oil changes for the past 25 + years with great results. Has saved me thousands of dollars too!

  • @HiTechOilCo where does the dirt go?

  • @amoswt - What dirt?

  • @wmcs11 you could have gotten to jiffy jube and had them do it. it is best to buy the oil filter and correct viscosity and give it to them...

  • @quackbeef - Not only the correct viscosity, but also the correct ratings. Not just any oil is acceptable for a Smart car. The oil has to meet MB Sheet 229.5 or MB Sheet 229.51 performance standards. Apparently, not many oils are good enough to meet this standard.

  • @wmcs11 yes, its saying it needs an oil change mate

  • good to gooow! lol

  • Do you have to use a dealer filter like in the video or have you found an aftermarket compatible like a fram?

  • mb-108

  • as you changing oil, oil filter u have to change air filter too.

  • dont really have to

  • @Revolutionlt - The air filter doesn't need changing with an oil change. Air filters are changed dependent upon visual inspection to see how dirty/plugged up they are or not.

  • Excellent vid! Thanks much! 5/5 stars

  • You'd be way better off running Amsoil instead of Mobil 1. You could use Amsoil 0W30 or 5W30 with an EAO12 oil filter and go 25,000 miles or 1 year (safely and reliably.) Amsoil beats Mobil 1 synthetic in all the head to head ASTM tests.

  • There are lots of oils better then mobil 1. Amsoil, Castrol EDGE, Valvoline syn, Penzoil syn, Enoes, red line, etc.

  • The issue is, nothing is better than Amsoil. That's a proven fact and can be verified with ASTM testing. Amsoil made the first synthetic oil before any of those countries. The other fact is, those companies don't have to make their oils as good as Amsoil. They all have short drain intervals and market to people who don't care or know any better.

  • I know Ams is the best but can't knock the others. I personally use castrol edge in my motor cuz its much easier to get. I have ams in the trans and rear end tho. Eneos is used in F1 so I won't say they suck. Lol

  • What do you mean "easier to get"? I make one phone call and ANYTHING from Amsoil is delivered to me the very next day. No driving all over town looking for oil and filters. I don't care who or what uses the oil. Unless that oil company can prove via ASTM testing that they are better than Amsoil, I am not using their oils. Amsoil pays an independent company to test their oils vs. many popular competitors. Amsoil is better than Edge. Stop using it and just use Amsoil. Order on-line.

  • Which Amzoil weight fof mild weather Los Angeles?

  • It's a nice video, but it misses one thing. The plug has a crush washer you should replace each time you change the plug. Skipping it once may not be a big issue, but more than that and you'll start to leak.

  • Good tutorial. I was the proud owner of a brand new smart car last October. It drove well and actually quite fun. In January I parked the car in a tight spot when I got back I was blocked in. The only way out was to go down a low roadside kerb (about 8" - no jokes please). The car has now been written off because the oil filter was damaged in this process and lost oil. Is the the oil filter in a vulnerable position or should we not go down a kerb of that size in a smart car?

  • curb not kerb

  • Comment removed

  • @SwingLeft "kerb" is common in the UK and it's Commonwealth countries, like AU, NZ, etc.

  • good thing to do is after you pour the new oil in the engine it would be smart to start the engine to make sure the new oil circulates through the filter and turn the engine off after you inspected the filter to see that it did not leak. double check the oil level to make sure it doesnt need anymore oil because some oil stays inside the oil filter.

  • Thanks for this video. It's now time to change the oil on my Smart and now I know how to do it.

  • Comment removed

  • great job.... I have the same car (color too) and will now change the oil myself as well !!!!! Quick question - did you buy the oil filter from smart for a specific reason? can you buy a generic filter? also at 5000 miles was this the first oil change?

  • Great how too video which will folks a heck of a lot of money and time. I read the comments and it looks like there are some real lowlife idiots like the modhammer dude that has a sever case of oral decay....bet his tongue falls out with the rest of the shit in his mouth. Good job my man!!

  • That looks like the easiest oil change in the world. This thing should be a breeze to maintain.

  • There shouldn't be a need to apply oil to the rubber ring considering that the mount on the car will be oily already.

  • ok so the dealership says to change at 5000 and the book says at 10000... what would you do? i have 13000 on the car and had one change s far.

  • I use "Mobile 1, Extended, 5W30" in a Dodge Neon at 10,000 intervals. It now has 210,000 miles on it starting at 1,200 miles when bought! Other words, use the "Mobile 1, Extended performance" for going the 10,000 - 15,000 intervals. The Smart engine should be a longer lasting engine.

  • @LittleBigNumber - If you go to the Mobil 1 web site, you may find that Mobil 1 doesn't meet the Smart Inc. recommended oil specification of MB 229.5 or MB 229.51.

  • @dnmolo - If the stealership is recommending oil change intervals at half the interval the vehicle manufacturer is, it might be wise to avoid patronizing that stealership any longer.

  • @Echeque5 "stealership" huh?? I very much approve of this term.

    :-)

  • Hey, good job. But can you tell me how to reset my maintenace warning symbol?

  • after u finish putting in the new oil, turn the ignition 1 notch, dont start the engine, the battery symbol should come on and then pump the gas pedal 3 times to the floor quickly, then the maintenance symbol should be reseted

  • Heck yea. Man thats easier than changing the vw oil. Thank you so much I am just reaching about 7 thousand miles and this video is going to help me big time.

  • Second you always fill the filter with oil unless it is in a position that makes it impractical.

  • ImYourCexyMan is one dumb cock sucker. First off loser, the fact that you work at a lube shop basically tells me you are a loser that can't hack it in a real shop.

  • did you get that oil filter from a mercedes dealer, mitsubishi dealer or from some where else?... btw it was a good video.

  • loser

  • Hey Muppet! Older 600 & 700cc Smart's didn't drain plugs unless the sump was changed. The newer Smart's do have a drain plug. I'm glad I don't have to go to your shop for work & it sounds like you don't have too many newer cars there anyway!

  • wow, I don't want you touching my car
