Jeffrey Steingarten is a rude, pompous, bigoted windbag. On tonight's episode of Iron Chef (07/14/2011,) he said made the following comment to Iron Chef Michael Symon (I quote) "Is it because you're Greek or because you're from Cleveland that your halibut is overcooked."

I watched this episode and I didn't think that comment was racist at all...if it was supposed to be, he would have said fried chicken or something. I think he meant it just to name a different type of meat and she just happened to be black, I'm sure he would have said the same thing to someone white.

In culinary competitions, I was always struck by the meats a cook would use? I asked a friend of mine why fish was so prevalent in gourmet cook offs? He said,"Burning a steak or oil frying pork?chicken isn't a challenge; Seafoods and organ cuts are items that show if you really know how to cook.' I was taken back with Jeffrey's comment... for 1.2 seconds. He could have easily said,"If it has a weaker flavor, it would have been a waste to choose Lamb?" The dreaded 'You people... is the 'N-word'.

As much as black people LOVE fried chicken**, this isn't racist, he's just saying lamb is a strong tasting meat, so don't expect it to have a mild flavour. Our culture is typically so hyper-sensitive to being politically correct that any off hand comment that even brushes against a racist idea (i.e. mentioning chicken to an African American) is immediately construed as racist.
