  • I agree with Frank, most people say cleat as they are starting or like he said within 2 seconds after saying it, which does no good anyway, so why waste the time?

  • "Corona traffic Bellanca 4201B is departing ruwnay 25 via right turn after departure direct Paradise, IFR."

Love how you use the mic thingys... it makes it seem that I'm in the plane with you!

  • he was probly just looking around to see if the prop was clear! Dude, my uncle does that all the time.

  • Why is it that people come on here and can not just enjoy the videos. Who cares if he yells clear prop or not. fholbert you have a great website and great videos!! Keep them coming please!! As a Student pilot, they give me inspiration to continue my training. And it is truly about the love and passion of aviation. Thank you

  • Thanks a lot.

  • "Corona Traffic Bellanca 4201B is departing runway 25 via right turn after departure direct Paradise IFR."

Corona Traffic Bellanca 4201B just departued runway 25

  • i didnt hear you clear the prop area

  • No you didn't. Is that an FAR?

  • Its Peculiar to UK training and operation where as well as looking round, the words "Clear Prop!" is shouted at the top of ones voice out the window before starting. Some think its good practice, others that it attracts unwanted attention of those not airfield aware and could encourage a "passer by" to walk towards to ask "hey what was that you said?" - just as you start it in their face.

  • Having been a pilot for 33 years here is what I see. The average GA pilot puts his hand on the starter, then his head goes low and he yells out the window clear prop. Within 1/2 a second, and before he raises his head, the starter engages. No one had time to get out of the way nor did the pilot ever look outside. So yelling clear prop is just a checklist item.

I look right, left, right again and then left again before I engage the starter. No I don't yell "Clear Prop"

  • Bellanca fly-in that day? Looks busier than I remember it. And a SoCal direct number is worth it's weight in gold.

  • Oh yea, that direct number works really good.

  • Nice! Did you do soft field take off as well?

  • I took off from the paved runway.

  • That what I thought!

  • How long did it take you to get someone on the phone? Last time I called them was a couple months ago. If I was on my cell phone I'd have lost at least a bar off the battery meter.

  • I call SoCal Approach direct and I do that all the time. It rings, they answer.
