A volcano builds up an ash and cinder cone, then coral reefs form around its base.
Over time, the volcano dies, and the soft ash cone erodes away, leaving behind these circular coral reefs, which, over time, often break the surface, and form little islands.
The bigger ones often have an abandoned aircraft landing strip, and a few rusty buildings, left over from World War 2.
@skeez86 Atlantis has been found off the coast of Cuba. Paulina Zelinski found it. It fits the description of the city perfectly that Plato talked about. Discovery Channel had a whole big program done about it and it never aired. The powers that be don't want to admit that our civilization is much older than what mainstream archeologist and scientists agree on. There is a lot of proof of this. There is also a similar city off the coast of Japan, Yonaguni.
@mercanaries3 What? I never said that conspiracies didn't exist before youtube. You're just a fucking idiot, if you think that nukes don't exist. Lol.
its cool if you post something that is truley strange or that would never been seen by most except on google earth but this is a common and a well documented natural occurance. They are beutiful but not strange. Do your homework. You should have learned about atolls in middle school high school at the latest.
It's "strange" I agree, but they are quite common. These atolls exist in most of the warm oceans and several countries (including the US, France, the UK, etc.) have military installations on many of them. They have proved invaluable for near-equatorial rocket launches and for keeping sensitive equipment and tests far from the problems associated with installations on the mainlands, near the countries' citizen populations and cities.
They are called Atoll's, there are thousands of them. They have been around for a billion years. I think it's time to go back to 7th grade science but this time open your text book.
im 11 and i want to be a scientist... i know what is it,last time, the middle of it was a volcano, and erupted, and by some reasons(i forgot), the volcano sank, leaving the beach behind...so it is ring shaped.
It's a large vulcano or a mountain, which have been destroyed by time, when it was going down (Took 1000's of years) it pushed up the sand and dirt from the bottom
It is one of the Cook Islands... Its name is Palmerston and it is a medium sized, low-lying atoll formation of the Southern Cook Islands, It is located 500 km to the northwest of Rarotonga and 360 km west-northwest from Aitutaki. Although Palmerston is a member of the Southern group, it lies far to the west of the other members of the southern islands — physically it has more common with the islands to the north...
That is Palmerston Island, it is the outer edges of a dormant volcano , the inner "pool" is the mouth of the beast. and also if Googe Earths water layering system is correct, This island is submerged under the ocean except for a few points on it.
This guy, Barack Obama, he thinks there are 57 states in the USA.... Also, he's never had a real job in his entire life. NO management experience or anything. So, let's quit being political.
Honestly, at least the publisher shows curiosity in the world. I'm assuming that most of you are American. Have you seen your Republican candidates for president struggle to identify Lybia on a map? Sheesh! This person is educating themselves. And no, its not a sandbar or a sunken mountain - its a coral Atol. It's made out of the dead skeletons of millions od coral polyps that collect to form an island over millions of years...
it's an atol. They're basically coral reefs, and all of them look pretty much just like that, complete with the big lagoon in the middle. Go look at the Great Barrier Reef, there's tons of them. Quite a few of the Polynesian and Micronesian islands and nations are on atols. They make for great diving.
I remember someone telling me to search 'Christmas Island" on Google Earth and it came up as a Reindeer-shaped island. I don't know if it's real or not..
Dumbass haven´t you ever seen an atol? Next time go southwards from Hawaii and find Kiribati. It´s strange indeed man. BTW, this comment was sent from Scandinavia... Learn to use Google and do your homework, especially in geography. Oh yeah, Scandinavia is a suburb near LA.

Nice example of a fairly typical coral atoll.
