  • Ever hear of the Maldives?

  • Nice example of a fairly typical coral atoll.

A volcano builds up an ash and cinder cone, then coral reefs form around its base.

Over time, the volcano dies, and the soft ash cone erodes away, leaving behind these circular coral reefs, which, over time, often break the surface, and form little islands.

The bigger ones often have an abandoned aircraft landing strip, and a few rusty buildings, left over from World War 2.

  • a youtube video with google earth? must be another "I found atlantis in my cornflakes" video.

They are beutiful but not strange. Do your homework. You should have learned about atolls in middle school high school at the latest.

  • It is an atoll, caused by large volcano retreating and leaving behind the fringing coral reef, which then continues to grow.

  • lol @boostedpsi99

  • es un atolon, no tiene nada de extraño.

  • cual es la extrañeza?

  • It's "strange" I agree, but they are quite common. These atolls exist in most of the warm oceans and several countries (including the US, France, the UK, etc.) have military installations on many of them. They have proved invaluable for near-equatorial rocket launches and for keeping sensitive equipment and tests far from the problems associated with installations on the mainlands, near the countries' citizen populations and cities.

  • "LOST"

  • I always wondered where the Lost island was...

  • Its so pretty :D

  • They are called Atoll's, there are thousands of them. They have been around for a billion years. I think it's time to go back to 7th grade science but this time open your text book.

  • ITS CALLED AN ATOLL

  • It is one of the Cook Islands... Its name is Palmerston and it is a medium sized, low-lying atoll formation of the Southern Cook Islands, It is located 500 km to the northwest of Rarotonga and 360 km west-northwest from Aitutaki. Although Palmerston is a member of the Southern group, it lies far to the west of the other members of the southern islands — physically it has more common with the islands to the north...

  • Honestly, at least the publisher shows curiosity in the world. I'm assuming that most of you are American. Have you seen your Republican candidates for president struggle to identify Lybia on a map? Sheesh! This person is educating themselves. And no, its not a sandbar or a sunken mountain - its a coral Atol. It's made out of the dead skeletons of millions od coral polyps that collect to form an island over millions of years...

  • @spankiespeedo Obama thinks there are 57 states in the USA. Everyone mess's up with all those camera's in ur face.

Quite a few of the Polynesian and Micronesian islands and nations are on atols. They make for great diving.
