@Resolutionx1 mine drinks tap water but that can be bad for them because of the chlorine in it. If you use tap water go to your pet store and get something that'll get rid of the chlorine. I forgot what they call it. ;_; But Purified water is fine. has no chlorine in it. :)

So much mis-information. I rarely give my hermit crabs hermit crab food (like the store bought she showed) I like to give them fresh fruit and veggies. They mostly eat that. I dont blame them. I wouldn't want to get sick from eatting cheap store brought hermit crab food.
if you use organic fruits and vegetables you also needs tons of other nutrients like freeze dried shrimp food for protein and some calcium you can use cuttlebone. If you research on the internet there is a list somewhere on all the foods you can feed it and which ones are toxic. pet store 'hermit crab food' is toxic! dont buy it
best hermit crab food: fruit. just buy organic fruit (either dried or not) and put it in the cage, replace it daily, and if you want calcium put in eggshells(sounds gross but it's what has kept my hermit crabs alive for 6 yrs.) Best water: spring water. i've been using Orzarka for 6 yrs. and dont bother with those "water purifiers", they are kinda expensive and complicated.
my crabs health is very important to me, i take him for a walk every day.... active little sucker, i can barely keep up. i also have this huge shell with a little water in it and it loves giving itself a bath.. no help from me needed

Debies kool! But its not fair!! Us ppl in QLD dont get all those kool stuff at the pet stores like Hermit crab cokies, or vacation food. We get nothing!! all we get is some hermie food and salt and some toys, but not anything kool!!! :-(
Never never never give them pet store food. You just need to give them a variety of foods, without a repeating dinner for at least two week intervals. That is, if I fed my crabs apples and carrots tonight, I won't feed them apples and carrots again before two weeks.

You can already tell that she is a bad hermit crab owner by what substrate she uses and how small her tank is. There are so many other things wrong with that tank I can't even name them all. Actually, surprisingly enough she IS right about food. But, I would suggest cutting the fruit and/or veggies in half or so, but hey that's just me. Congrats Debbie on getting something right!

ANYONE... will my hermit crab be ok? she is molting (her exoskelton is already off) and i picked her up not knowing that she was molting... will this hurt her at all? as soon as i noticed that she was molting i put her right back down to where she had been...
I've seen hermit crabs that have been disturbed while they were molting that survived, she's probably estreamly stressed and all you can do is not disturb her again, if she has tank mate's I'd put something to protect her from them because right now she probably smells like food to them and we don't want her getting eaten. A cut off coke bottle or a terra cotta flower pot will do the trick to devide her from them without stressing her out even more by moveing her to another tank to be held...
The same thing happened to my hermie Sherbert. Just put a coconut hut over her so she has some privacy. You can also put water in bottlecaps. In addition to her exo, honey, cuttlebone, crushed coral, peanut butter, and more chitin and calcium foods would be good. I sectioned off Sherbert from the other crabs with a couple of cds (her friends were visiting her in the coco hut quite often and I was scared it was stressing her out). Good luck! :)
Ive done that once and he turned out good i had to put him in a seperate cage away from my other crabs cause one was trying to pull him out just mist him EVERY day it should be over in 10 days if not already. Hope this helped :)

well i've been pinched by my hermit crab spike and he is the small crab, but his pinch hurts the worse. what i do is if i want to put him on the palm of my hand i hold my hand out flat so here are no little folds for him to pinch also, crabs pinch if they feel like they are going to fall so lay your hand on the floor if nessasery.

Watch out. Commercial foods with preservatives like copper sulfate and ethoxin (or something like that) can kill crabs. its much easier to feed them fruits ,veggies, and a variety of meats. Make sure everything you feed them is free of iodized salt, because that's bad for them.

the carrot can be raw, but i buy organic carrots for mine since pesticides are harmful. organic baby carrots can be bought cheaply at walmart. i only give them 1/2 of one per 24 hours.
I sincerely hope this woman doesn't own any hermit crabs... my god that tank looks like a death trap. GRAVEL?! What a nightmare! And was that supposed to be a water dish on the other side of the food? I can't imagine any hermits being able to survive in that kind of environment more than a couple weeks.
I just use regular play sand mixed with saltwater- it's cheap and clean and it works. The sand needs to be kept wet enough that you could build a sandcastle out of it, but not like sopping wet. The salt really helps prevent mold from growing.
You can definitely use the coconut bedding, but it's expensive. I've never tried it.
I don't know about health wise exactly but I would imagine natural REAL food is better, obviously if they sell the pellets and powder then the crabs can eat it but would you want to eat the same nasty smelling pellets everyday or would you rather have a piece of banana with some peanut butter on it? don't give them the same food everyday and they'll be less bored and much happier.
the wraith if your crab is molting put it in a seperate tank with a shell till its done molting and the reason your crabs died is because of the chlorine in the water it blister's there gills and slowly suffocates them never put them into tap water. periode. if you want them to let go put your hand on the floor or a desk some where clean and then just wait till they crawl off of you it wont take long and this will not damage the crab or you hope i helped singed a dedicated crab lover

for hermit crabs, it helps them a ton more when you provide something soft or crushed up in their bowl. the bigger claw is for having shell fights, not for crushing food.
it is so easy to feed hermit crabs from fresh food that you have in your house already that you shouldnt need to buy dried anyway. fresh fruit and veg everyday plus oats, wholemeal bread, peanut butter etc and they are happy, sometimes a little ham or chicken, plus a dish of salty water and one of fresh and they are happy. they dont each much and cos they are nocturnal its good to have an infra red heat lamp so that you can watch them in the dark. they have great personalities.

ive been bitten twice by mine and it does hurt. just pick it up by its shell and u should be ok. if u want to put it on the palm of ur hand becareful where u put its claw and how u r holding ur hand.

well i've been pinched by my hermit crab spike and he is the small crab, but his pinch hurts the worse. what i do is if i want to put him on the palm of my hand i hold my hand out flat so here are no little folds for him to pinch also, crabs pinch if they feel like they are going to fall so lay your hand on the floor if nessasery.

Watch out. Commercial foods with preservatives like copper sulfate and ethoxin (or something like that) can kill crabs. its much easier to feed them fruits ,veggies, and a variety of meats. Make sure everything you feed them is free of iodized salt, because that's bad for them.

my little crabbies LOVE coconut. they eat about the size of a olive jar lid...in about 48hrs.... yum... I myself eat coconut too...and as soon as my littlest crab ate the coconut, me molted!! today actually... =D Yay ernie!

the carrot can be raw, but i buy organic carrots for mine since pesticides are harmful. organic baby carrots can be bought cheaply at walmart. i only give them 1/2 of one per 24 hours.

And was that supposed to be a water dish on the other side of the food? I can't imagine any hermits being able to survive in that kind of environment more than a couple weeks.

I just use regular play sand mixed with saltwater- it's cheap and clean and it works. The sand needs to be kept wet enough that you could build a sandcastle out of it, but not like sopping wet. The salt really helps prevent mold from growing.
You can definitely use the coconut bedding, but it's expensive. I've never tried it.

I don't know about health wise exactly but I would imagine natural REAL food is better, obviously if they sell the pellets and powder then the crabs can eat it but would you want to eat the same nasty smelling pellets everyday or would you rather have a piece of banana with some peanut butter on it? don't give them the same food everyday and they'll be less bored and much happier.

the wraith if your crab is molting put it in a seperate tank with a shell till its done molting and the reason your crabs died is because of the chlorine in the water it blister's there gills and slowly suffocates them never put them into tap water. periode. if you want them to let go put your hand on the floor or a desk some where clean and then just wait till they crawl off of you it wont take long and this will not damage the crab or you hope i helped singed a dedicated crab lover

for hermit crabs, it helps them a ton more when you provide something soft or crushed up in their bowl. the bigger claw is for having shell fights, not for crushing food.

it is so easy to feed hermit crabs from fresh food that you have in your house already that you shouldnt need to buy dried anyway. fresh fruit and veg everyday plus oats, wholemeal bread, peanut butter etc and they are happy, sometimes a little ham or chicken, plus a dish of salty water and one of fresh and they are happy. they dont each much and cos they are nocturnal its good to have an infra red heat lamp so that you can watch them in the dark. they have great personalities.
