This is a set of COMMERCIALLY FABRICATED drums. Anyone can play these drums. They have absolutely no religious value whatsoever. They are good for practicing and learning licks. What is a set of FUNDAMENTO DE AÑÁ is something TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I am an OMO AÑÁ and do not have a problem with seeing a woman play LP batas. Lissette does well for herself. She plays and sings with great flow and I imagine she worked very hard for that... And she's also beautiful, but I digress....
A white woman or man is obviously not going to sound African but surely she has the right to her own interpretation which happens to be pretty impressive.
Well, MrTimothy I'm sorry to say but your a little miss informed.
There are Batas of course for ceremonies these are Sacred Drums or Baptized drums and although you may be correct in that the majority are men who play them. Women like Lisette and many other are only expanding it's voice and carrying on the traditions.
I recently performed in Nigeria, Africa. Where the land of Yoruba began and the origins of the Bata Drum are born.
You know how many Bata players I found and I was on a mission and had access.
ZERO.
The Bata drums LP sells and other companies sell are known as ABERIKULA, A non sacred drum, these drums are allowed to be played by anyone man or women and can be applied to all types of music. they are meant to enrich music and not to be excluded from a musician because of gender or race.
Did you even notice how beautifully Lisette sang? and her passion while playing those rhythms? I can tell you she did a beautiful job and played them correctly.
Instead of noticing the Gender MrTimothy you should of gained inspiration.
I recommend next time you search out a bit of knowledge and focus on expanding the mind and not creating barriers to keep it blind.
The beauty of music and why I became a musician. Music has no boundaries, it does not exclude, it can transend and inspire. Be +
@MrTimothy2347 in african tradition they are also not made by LP!! Women are able to touch the drums that do not posses the orisha anya because they are not sacred. sacrifices arent made to the set she is playing and they arent prayed too. they are just drums!!!
@MrTimothy2347 im awo orunmila irete meyi"IFA LADDE" the first thing i want to say is that im offended, for a simple question, who gives the right to the LP to fabricate a bata drum?. And especially why this company is called Latin percussion if all those percussion that produces are deeply afro-cuban,yoruba.Secondly, the bata drum is sacred is used only for religious ceremonies to pay homage to the gods or to call eggunggun and only those who make an oath to oshun aña (the tambolera)can be
used.the aleyos, much less the obinis are not suitable for use, and aberikula is a great lack of respect for and nothing more, because nobody ever asked the iworos cubans if such misfortune could commit.so is better try to understand something of the argument.
@Carlos Thanks for checking it out . I am not offended since I've heard much worse as a female bataléra. I guess playing 3 drums with 2 hands that are normally played by six can come off sounding less than genuine but I can assure you a lot went into transcribing so as to stay true to the rhythms. Re: trying "hard to sound African" I only strive to play music not make a political statement. Musically sound critique allows "grown-up" dialogue rather than subjective attacks on race and gender.
I would love to hear that Iya with more chaguoro on it other than that AWESOME!!!!

I know these drums are popular among the Afro-Caribe & Latin musicians but this
sounds like a white woman trying hard to sound African.Just doesn't cut the mustard
for me.You can't fake a "sound".You've either got it or you don't.No disrespect to her
playing.

@ElJibaroBravo. Actually women are allowed to play Bata drums. There are many Cuban women groups. Check Obini Bata.
The only Bata drums they are not allow to play are the Aña drums.
