I am doing Paper Towns for my English Independent Study Unit, and I have to choose a significant passage with regards to the character, theme, plot action, or mood but I am not sure what to choose. Anyone have any idea??
Because my country has pretty low levels of awesome when it comes to books,I haven't read any of John's novels, because they don't exist here.I sure as hell want to,but I can't order them cause the stupid shipping would be pretty expensive.Last summer when I went to London,I hadn't discovered the Vlgobrothers yet so that I could buy John's books. So,the next one of my friends who's going abroad for vacation,is going to be forced to buy Paper Towns for me.
@JustABitUnlikely11 it's actually really hard to find johns books in england, I've looked, though I haven't checked lately so you never know. So instead I've just ordered them online, I've only ever seen one of johns books "in the wild" and that was in my local library. It was Looking for Alaska, I made sure to slip and nerdfighter note inside. So I think your best bet it to ask a friend that goes on holiday to america.
I hate audio books. They're always too slow, and invariable and boring. But if john voiced audio books, especially his books, I would have nary a complaint.
Why did the dead guy's last name change to Joyner after being Morris? And what's with John's books and profanities? Nothing personally against him, just look at my screen name, but I don't think those words are neccessary. I would totally tell my mom to read this if it weren't for those.
One of my friends read one of your books, and now I really want to go and read one too. And I definitely will when I finish the books I'm in the middle of right now! There's more than usual...
I never understood what was going on there; why she told him to close the window and why they kept looking at each other. Made me so confused. Although, I still have yet to read the book because all I've read was the first chapter in Barnes and Noble. Maybe it'll explain that? Or maybe not. Hm.
@TurnTheLightsOnXx - @TurnTheLightsOnXx - I finished the book several months ago, and I still don't completely understand this. It's up to personal interpretation, really, but my opinion of it so far is that the scene summarizes their later relationship, with the screen between them distancing Margo from Quentin, showing some distorted image that really isn't true. (continued)
@TurnTheLightsOnXx - It also shows how Margo is always trying to figure out some great distant mystery, while Quentin is just trying to figure out Margo, and yet neither of them can really see each other-- all of which also applies through pretty much the rest of the book.
Basically, I feel like there's a lot of symbolism there that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of. That's why it's so fun to think about.
I've been watching your guys for several months now. Decided to go back and watch all the vids I miss... man did I ever miss some things. I have to admit that I have never picked up your books John. However, the window and screen scene.... omg. That is what a real writing is all about. The ability to make people stop and laugh, cry, or cringe with the imagery that you create with not but words. Going to have to pick it up and read it now though it's not my general type of book.
The quote from the book "Howl" is also the first lyrics of the They Might Be Giants song 'I Should Be Allowed To Think', and also the book begins with 2 friends finding a dead guy, and John uses the phrase "crazier than a sh*thouse rat", which I recognize from the film "Stand By Me" which is about 4 friends finding a dead guy... Hmmm...
Wow that was freakin awesome...I was totally captivated. To be quite frank, I thought it was going to suck ass but was pleasantly surprised. Great stuff.
AAAAAAAAAAAH this makes me really really want the book so much i can't even wait but i don't have money AAAAAAAAAAAAH I hate book suspense when I don't have the book to find out more
I'll have to amazon it. I live in England and I've been looking all around town and bookshops near my town but I can't find it anywhere. I just got £20 though so now i can afford it easily : )
And John I love having you read to us :) I normally dislike having a book read to me because I have trouble paying attention and I find it annoying because I'd rather read the dang thing by myself, but you read really well and I didn't feel that way at all. To amazon I must go and buy that book!!!
ditto. She was probably thinking so hard, she could HAVE been staring at a serial killer and not have seen him. It's the oblivion of thought she was gazing at.
Plus, don't ask questions like that. Even if she was staring at someone/something (a Black Santa for instance!) I wouldn't spoil that for you!! Just finish reading and then we could debate! No worries!
John is, like, the only person that I can have read to me. Whenever people used to read stories to me as a kid, I'd get all annoyed because they'd go too slow, or they made stupid voices for all the characters. And then I listened to books on tape and I fell asleep. Literally.
But John reads at a perfect pace, and he doesn't do stupid voices, and he's just sort of nice to listen to. If I ever have to listen to a book on tape again (god forbid), I'd really like it if it were recorded by John.
If I may steal a lesson from The John Green Book of Making List-Filled Sentences, I'd like to tell you that 1. Paper towns was the best, most enthralling book I've read in years, although it must be said that 2. it's pretty much the only book (novel at least) I've read in it's entirety since I learned how to find enough key information in these paged creatures to ace the fug out of English tests;
3. even so, if I were to take the last 30 books I've completely read, partially read and enjoyed but got too sidetracked to finish, and/or BSed my way through for class, Paper Towns would still be my most favored. It may be the highest compliment I can give to a book when I say there wasn't a moment where I felt like I was wasting my time reading it when I could have been going on wikipedia binges, playing guitar, watching the Science Channel or drawing or something.
In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I started reading An Abundance of Katherines immediately after I finished (hence the "fug" There's no way I'd read the whole 872 page war novel to get that). I happen to be only 14 pages from finishing the Katherines now...don't know what I'm waiting for. Btw, Hassan=full, unbridled hilarity, but his "not interesting"s are total bullcrap. Thank God for footnotes.
Anyway, what I mean to say, is: Thanks for taking a crap on authors like Stephanie Meyer and Lisi Harrison and restoring the act of reading fiction (esp. that which is directed toward the youth) to my mental list of respectable hobbies.
I've just finished Paper Towns. Its nice but I think Looking for Alaska was deeper. But did you rushed the last part? because it seems there's loopholes but i can't place what it is.
i would really like to read this book. actually i have been looking for a book to read over break... maybe this is the one..hopefully the library has it. =P
1. i discovered Brotherhood 2.0 four days ago, and so far it's been very bad for my education. i haven't studied for my french final at all yet. it's tomorrow. yeah. BUT: i seriously wan't to be a nerdfighter!
2. i REALLY want to read this book now! and i can't find it anywhere here. Finnish book stores do not have a very good variety of books in English. and paper towns hasn't been translated yet. i think this fact really increases world suck.
lol, I'm ALMOST done with it, it'll be so sad to have to stop reading it and return it to the library... I wonder, do you John will mind if I just kidnap it forever?
That sounded really good. I've only just joined the vlogbrothers/nerdfighters thing, so I'm still working on getting copies of all your books, but this was amazing. I like the flow and intensity of the words. I'm looking forward to reading it soon. :)
I'm so interested in your thought process. Maybe it's not important or you just thought it flowed better, but I was wondering why the person who said "see you tomorrow" first in your reading changed to the second person in the final version.
O!M!G! I was already excited for Paper Towns to come out, but now I am super, super excited! I haven't seen the Brotherhood 2.0 videos since the beginning, so I came across this one randomly, and boy am I glad I did. John, you are totally awesome, and I am even more eagerly awaiting the release of Paper Towns!
I check for this book at my library and so far they have one on hold so now I have it on hold! My goodness your writing is good. But I think you already know that.
I just reserved a copy of "Paper Towns" at Borders over the weekend. And then I sat and read Maureen Johnson's "13 Little Blue Envelopes" for 3 hours.
for graduation i got a paper for a reserved copy when it comes out!!! even better i got a borders gift card w it in a puppy sized elephant gift card holder!
i'm super excited to say that i already have $100 set asside to buy multiple copies of your newest book to come 'paper towns'. A few of my friends and i are anxious for it to be published. We're counting down the days!!
Damn, I need to reread this book.

That sounded really good. I've only just joined the vlogbrothers/nerdfighters thing, so I'm still working on getting copies of all your books, but this was amazing. I like the flow and intensity of the words. I'm looking forward to reading it soon. :)

I wish we could discuss every part of your book. I haven't finished it yet, but I didn't go to class today, because I wanted to read it.
jenibo44 3 years ago
I'm so interested in your thought process. Maybe it's not important or you just thought it flowed better, but I was wondering why the person who said "see you tomorrow" first in your reading changed to the second person in the final version.

I love that there is a book behind you called "How We Die"
