Every time I hear this song it makes me cry, cry, cry! Being an Acadian it's hard to listen with just my ears. Thank you to The Band for the heartfelt document. Vive L'Acadie!
Love This COOL Slide Show One Of The Best Bands ever guess that's why they were the BAND Vive L'Acadie thank you for your heritage and mostly for your music For you Americans This is where Cajun Music came from Accadia Nova Scotia New Buinswick Canda
@BluesBrothers823 It's an excellent lyric. Only rivaled by, "Then some returned to the motherland / The high command had them cast away / And some stayed on to finish what they started / They never parted / They're just built that way."
Man 0 Man what a sweet groove, with a little Canadian History thrown in to the mix. We Canucks should spend more time investing in our History instead of trying to bury it under the guise of "Political Correctness" Bravo to the Band. A True Classic. Play on, Lads!
The Expulsion is a black mark on the history of Nova Scotia. Good to see a Canadian band that made it as big as The Band by telling the stories of America telling the lesser known stories of Canada.
As a person with a solid Acadian linage (surname - Le Blanc) the song evokes sad feelings of what my ancestors went through. Just travel through Nova Scotia's "Acadia" heading north to the Annapolis Valley and you cant help but think of the "expulsion".
today was the 150th reunion of the proud acadian family the bourgeois held in st Albert i am proud to say i am part of that family for many generations they have been around i am 12th generation.
I am 80 yrs. old, live in NC and am hearing impaired. Would anyone be willing to send me the words? Also, I would like to know where I can access those great maps and pictures.
I think this is one of the songs that was primarily written by Robbie Robertson, as he wrote most of them or many of them. But I've read that Levon Helm argued that some of the other members did not receive proper writing credit.
I can say that hearing this song over the years and always coming back - I feel so proud to be an American because I can hear how proud these guys are to be Canadian. No matter how many miles you travel, no matter where you go you always know and remember home.
@xpat73 lol yeah but that war still affects whats going on right now fuckin dumbass, why do you think the french people in NB are still fighting for their french rights? coincidence?
We Acadians, are still waiting for an apology from the Queen. The canadian government is too afraid to ask her though. Glad the Band has greater respect for our culture than the canadian government.
The federal Parliament of Canada has recognized the Acadian deportation by a made-in-Canada Royal Proclamation. The thing is it's the British crown, not Canada since in 1755 they did not exist, that should apologize. The British crown is responsible for the deportation not the Canadian MP's. It's as if my father would punch me and my brother would apologize. Doesn't make sense does it? Vive l'Acadie
Great song, cool video. Although the video seems to focus on Nova Scotia, don't forget about the expulsion of the Acadians in New Bunswick and Prince Edward Island.
@DiscoSux87 -Look at the maps ! It is a myth that any Acadian was deported to Louisiana. They were deported elsewhere and some managed to get there by themselves;a pretty resilient people they are !! Vive L'Acadie !!!
i live 15 minutes from grand pre.if you get a chance visit the place.i used this song as a teaching tool with my children.beautiful but true song.thank you for posting the video.
With this masterpiece, The Band takes its place as a great historic troubadore."Acadian Driftwood" tells the story of the diaspora of the Acadians-called "Cajuns" in Louisiana.Rapid fire talk, unforgettable food, lightning quick minds....all of this was forged by the crucible of history as told so lyrically by The Band.Magnificent song.
This is such a beautiful song. I've loved The Band for ages, but I've never heard this one before - which is a travesty. Why doesn't every Canadian have this song burned into their collective awareness?
I was never a great Band fan. Like a lot of their songs and admired them more than enjoyed them. I think this is from Stage Fright and frightening good song too.
So I've lived in NS my whole life, and been a big fan of the bad for about 10 years, i never knew this gem existed until yesterday, awesome song about a terrible even in North American History. And if you ever wondered why there's "Cajun" people in the southern US, its because "Cajun" is a bastardization of the Word Acadian. hence why people in the south speak french, cause they were deported to whats now the deep south. Free history lesson of the day.
@moneywagon Oui, mais son Français n'est pas comprehensible pour des Francophones modernes.
Or in English, yes, there are descendants of Acadians living in Lousiana, Mississippi and Missouri nowadays, but their French is unintelligable for speakers of Modern French.
@Elphir I wouldn't say it is unintelligable, just a different dialect. It takes some getting used to. The same is true for Acadian french. Both are old french and different than modern french but I happen to like hearing both Acadian and Cajun french.
Great video to go along, I've always wanted to know what this song was about! One of my very fav's by The Band, that whistle part is always in my head.
@you1986tube Actually they were originally called The Hawks, when they were backing Ronnie Hawkins.. Had a few names after that. When the worked on Dylan's The Basement Tapes, they were always refered to as the band and by various other frontmen... Robbie Robertson & Levon Helm thought since they were refered to as the band, the should call themselved The Band... Dylan did not name them....
One voice for four lines and another for four lines and back and forth from first to third person and two parts to a verse and then not and a third voice and back to the other two and two lines each and three on the chorus and the double references with historical liberties and ambiguity and Garth's arragement all make for a fine pairing with a good Bourbon.
wow, this is great. Just like England. Gotta take everything. They did it to Ireland and Scotland, too.
