Over a period of two days earlier in the year, i heard these three really loud pops in my lounge - first time i thought a fuse had blown somewhere, even tho nothing had gone off. Neither could i pinpoint where the pops were. Batteries when heated to combustion point can explode at any time if something happens, 1 second or 1 hour and it may explode. Lets say it doesn't explode immediately and you get next to it to check, then it explodes. First of all you could get a bad burn or toxic fumes from battery acid; you could inhale and die :s

umm, i bet if you sit it over a hot flame for a few minutes it will burst. If you happen to have a propane torch, that'd definately work; I really can't think of many ways to do this tho.

I did this with the same type a battery by charging them with a 9 volt battery in reverse polarity (positive to negative, negative to positive)

Yes, it would probably work with a dead battery. As long as the lithium and zinc powders are still inside, any battery will work.
