WOW!!! LMAO! I caught one out of Big Cormorant myself....back in 98-99..... I thought it was a freak until I caught another one out of a different lake ( Many Point Lake I think ).....LOL.... that is how I made up this name for an internet user-name...LOL... thanks for posting!
Aren't they a protected species now? Ether way, they're weird little guys. Can you imagine if they got as big here as their relatives in China and Japan?
@idledreameress Well some people think they should be killed, because they eat fish eggs in the spring. But it is an exaggeration to say that they have any affect on the fish population in MOST cases. Many aquatic animals attempt to eat fish eggs because they are a mountain of protein and vitamins. This is why many fish protect their nests. Over all Mud puppies are not a threat to any fish species in MOST cases, they are a native to a large part of the USA and are part of the Proteidae family.
@songpool5 Thanks songpool. They look harmless enough so I wondered if they were an introduced species that was killing of native species. The cane toad and mud gudgeon fish (both from Africa) are a nightmare here in Oz.
@songpool5 ya i mean the salmon's huge yearly migration back to their spawns when they lay their eggs everythings eating the eggs and the dead salmon its just their sheer immense numbers that keeps it going. nature cant easily endanger or kill off a species without mans help
I caught one ice fishing as well about 10 years ago....I thought it looked alien! We took it off and kept it in the shanty until it snuck back down the hole.
@zerw1pat you sir are a fuckin idiot. kill them for what? thay're not parasitic. . they're not invasive or imported. or a nuisance such as yourself. stop breathing my air.
@trickykid0011 lol ha you have no idea who your fucking with prick so dont talk shit to someone you dont no! the DNR dont want them put back you idiot I work for them!
@zerw1pat First off if you worked for the DNR as you claim you would probably know that the DNR doesn't have a "one pollicy for all the lakes" sort of a thing. There may be a "catch and kill" for some lakes where they are a problem, but generally speaking they are a healthy part of many lakes ecosystem and are prey for many different types of fish including, Walleye, Large mouth and smallmouth Bass, Pike, Muskies, Dogfish, snapping turtles, and more. Just so you know before you run your mouth.
@zerw1pat well we dont want mexicans here, shall we kill them? wait bad reference. and i wasnt fucking with you. just commenting with my opinion. and i agree with songpool5. the dnr.. lol
Back in the late 90's I went to cormorant lake and there was literally thousands of mudpuppies laying on the ice from anglers catching them and throwing them on the ice. That night my dad and I caught over twenty of them... and no walleyes.
He dont look like he's doing too good. On a side note Im guessing Wisconsins got them too then?
