@afj007, Steve was "let go" after a power struggle with Neal Schon & amnagement ( mostly Schon ) Journey had been around since 1973 but only made the Big time with Perry as frontman 1977-83. While Schon has always been the lead guitarist he also thought he was god, and like all those who think this, turned the band back to crap, Journey still plays now and again but will NEVER have the sound they had with Perry even though they have tried to hire new frontmen that sound like him.

He wasn't happy in Journey, said he felt like a stranger among the band, and his solo career was just taking off. He decided after his brush with death, that his family was his priority. Steve Perry was at one point with Journey but had to have some major surgery and was likely to never sing again. By the grace of God, the surgery was successful and he went on to have an equally successful solo career. He is one of the many greats!
