Ya lychanking..... cheetahs are going extinct very quickly. So are several species of wild canine (wolves, jackels, etc) but not dogs. Several species of wild cat (leopards, jaguars, etc) but not house cats. Why? They each individually mean something to us. Like Ferdie does to his owner. I'm not saying they would be for most people. Any exotic is not for everyone and even most dogs or cats, but I bet if you were allowed to keep them as pets the extinction threat would very quickly go away.
The persians used to breed cheetahs and use them like hunting hounds. I wish someone could start up a program for them instead of foxes. I'd pay a few thousand for a king cheetah to go with my wolfhounds.
@poondnub A very famous ongoing research project has been the domestication of silver foxes in Russia. Starting in 1949, these foxes were bred for docile qualities. You can read more about them and order one for yourself at sibfox (dot) com.
@1994saphira Russian white/silver foxes have been in a domestication program since the 60s, the most recent litters are almost as domestic as a dog now, They even show signs (like wagging tail) when their owner comes near. Those are the best bet for a domestic fox, $3000 though :(
Dunno if you're still interested.. But there are some foxes available for sale now that have been domesticated through a Russian breeding program. If you were serious about buying one you'd have to look into your states exotic pet laws and do the work of tracking down someone in America who breed them unless you want to thousands of dollars for one from Russia.
@Icarus000000 "tracking down someone in America who breed them unless you want to thousands of dollars for one from Russia."
If you can't afford a few thousand dollars, DO NOT GET ONE.
Pets are expensive to begin with just to properly care for, exotics are very expensive. Don't even consider it without doing a lot of research either. It can be fun to have an exotic, but for MOST people, it's a nightmare. They are considerably more trouble than a cat.
Got my red fox from tiny tracks exotic animals. She is pretty awesome, but it takes a lot of time and effort to train proper. I picked her up when she was about 5 weeks old, and still training. (she is now 6 months old.) currently working on shake, and not to bite my face to wake me up between 4-5am.
It all depends on how they were raised as kits. My breeder takes them from mom when their eyes open and hand feeds them. His whole family does it so to the fox everyone is mom. Mine was the most lovable pet I ever had. She wouldn't bite anyone. To show people how friendly she was I would just hand her over to them. She would hold on like a baby and be a happy girl. When I played with her like you were doing in this vid, yes she would bite but it was play. If I got right in her face she wou
@babeslayer117 dogs have been bred for hundreds of years to be good pets. Animals that have not be bred to be pets typically don't make good pets. Luckily for you a domestication experiment in Russia actually domesticated the silver fox. See en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Domesticated_silver_fox
OMG Thats the fox that I want! But the odds of getting a fox in ILL are.... 1/to infinity and beyond -.-

@babeslayer117 Domesticated Silver Foxes. Over fifty years spent breeding out the wild. Idk how to get one.
But they are human friendly, and apparently act like dogs.
