Thats prolly because when you try to go on wifi in battle tower you fight the teams of real people but they are COMPUTER CONTROLLED! They are teams of the people who "conquered" the battle room as an npc in the game put it.

How do I know this took place in battle tower? Well the guy on the other end had 3 pokemon, which is the must have number in battle tower.
