Keni and Billy had great chemistry like sly and larry! Keni also set the stage for louis johnson and Billy! Freddie Stone's guitar work embellished the funk even more!
@adksaxplaya I Love Keni Burke As A Bass Player! I Remember learning This Bass line back In (1976) When I Was In high School I'm Not To Sure That He ( Set The Stage) For Louis Johnson . Louis Played bass On ,Billy Preston's' Will It Go Round In Circles in 1972)... Thunder Thumbs Was Already In Full Effect ' As We Use To Say back Then. Louis and George Johnson Blew Every body away in 1975 on Quincy Jones Mellow madness album. And Then Released There Debut album (Look out for #1 in 1976)
@blueman2bass I agree with you totally and all due respect to the "Power of Q's arrangements" but i was speaking in terms of the funkiness between bass and keys. What made will it go round in circles hot was Billy use of funky electric piano and clavinet , an ingredient that Larry and Sly had already established. Then you had to add Bro Freddie Stone's great guitar work to the funk. The Burke family started very early with Keni studying Larry. Master someone else style and have Quincy blow it up?
@adksaxplaya Here's the depth to Keni's ear and dexterity. Larry never showed Keni 1 lick. Keni developed that "double thump" on his own. I've known Keni since we were 15 and he introduced me to Larry in1977. He taught me how to play. He'd turn his back and play and say "If you can get it you can have it" He'd eventually show me but..you had 2 work for it. When I made the jump to radio, I interviewed Larry in DC. Larry said "When I hear Keni play.I can't tell sometime if it's him or me"
@blueman2bass Funny how Keni's bass reminds me of early Marcus even and so clean. Guitar and Bass funk was an east coast thing as in James Brown or Parliament but when i think of east coast i think of Sly and Larry, Hershall,Butch and Larry etc... Don't get me wrong i love the Brothers Johnson but it was always about who they teamed up with. George even played guitar for GCS at one time but Wilton Rabb is best i've seen yet because his style is clean and so much like Freddie Stone. The greats !
@blueman2bass Louis had LG down cold. Louis picked it up on his own. The difference between Keni's style of play from Louis's was...Like Larry, Keni rode his thumb on that bottom E and kept a rhythmic basis for the total sound. Larry foundation is a "1-3-5 blues style of play" Keni is hte same. If you listen to keni's bassline in Mary J Blige's "Be Happy" Keni's octave attack is what brings him closer to Larry's flavor of play and at the time they both used Rotosounds

I have not heard this in years. They used to play this at Reid Street in NYC. The place used to be an old egg warehouse that they tuned into a club that used to be rocking and this is one of those tune that stood out. Thanks for digging this one up. Some really good memories with this one.
Clarence Burke and family may be returning to performing! Man, will I be waiting for that reunion! I saw these pioneering family and brought their music when I was 11 years old and I am still a fan!
I lost this album when I moved to Houston from Chi-Town. I thought I would never hear this song again and whats worse is I couldn't get anybody to remember it.
Hats off to papa Burke & Mama Burke... Curtis Mayfield had the ball rolling 4 awhile... something happened ... This group was to b the top act in the world.. no damn promotion and whatever else... I loved this entire family...
Seriously funky song....one of my all-time favorites...definite Larry Graham influence...Keni Burke is one of the all time funkiest bass players in the music industry...God bless them all!
Heyroz27 you are my hero! I've been searching for this album for years! I can't wait to tell my sister. We were just talking about it the other day. You are the man/woman!
Kenny Burke did a remake of a instrumental version of this on his first solo album and it was slammin'--never heard this version before, but it rounds out the story. Thanks for posting.
Reminds me of those days at the Regal, when nobody new about those Stairsteps but us Chicagoans. The only thing the Jacksons had on the Burkes, is that mighty motown dollar<
Hey wazup heyroz27,how are you.Yes larry is my mentor on the bass, larry has a beautiful heart and soul, and his family.Love keni style on bass,i also understand he's on linda cliffords cut's also. Will keep in touch with you HEYROZ27
Thank you for this post. I remember this song getting spins on Philly radio back in '76, which was one of the most prolific years in R&B and Soul....Ever! This is a rare and precious find.

Hey what's happening heyroz27,that's keni burke on bass.Larry told me that keni used to come to his rehearsal with sly and the family, that's why he's so funky.Love you KENI BURKE and the stairsteps. OLDSCHOOLBASS.
Heyroz27, you are my hero! I can't tell you how long I've been searching for this. Can you also post "Lifting" from this album? If so, then you would be my superhero! ; )

oH MY GOODNESS....thank you for posting this!!! i had been looking for this ever since someone posted the tv show "Barbara McNair" when the Stairsteps were on, and I recalled this song!!! thanks again....
actually, the label they recorded on was Dark Horse-owned by George Harrison. I thought he liked to collect hitler gear. That's strange, because at the time- the stairsteps were in the nation of islam.
Thanx so much. You've made an old soldier very happy. Livin' for the weekend back in'76

Keni played bass on this song which he wrote. Great effort in retrospect..however at the time the many hooks of the song probably kept it from being as big a hit as it deserved to be. A true fan

They should have been much bigger.
This album came out before The Brothers Johnson...
They used to be on Billy Preston's band
You can hear the influence on Brothers Johnsons First 3 albums.
The J-5 had Berry Gordy.
Brothers Johnson had Quincy Jones.
The Stairsteps never got the credit they deserved.

This song held so much POWER for me as a teen. Now, to finally hear it again, after searching EVERYWHERE , it's even more POWERFUL!
"Find out what's so beautiful...cleanse your heart and soul...you'll be BEAUTIFUL!!"
Think about it..."soothe your blues away...before your only life has come and gone!" That's spiritually POWERFUL.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post.
