I agree with what was said in the following episode: the movie was advertised as something other than it is. I mean I guess I don't even think the trailer hints at a heist film, but I never would've called it a heist film. It's a dramatic thriller: they show you what he does, set up a pleasant situation, and then build this tension as it starts to go wrong.
@wimpie25 LOL... +1 for your sneering condescension. -1000 for lack of originality (I mean.. being a pretentious douche is kind of a well-worn youtube cliche don't you think?). Here's the thing , "Drive" certainly wasn't a horrible film but it doesn't deserve all the plaudits it's getting imho. Stylistically it's pretty wonderful, the acting is also good.. but I didn't find the story all that engaging and I didn't particularly care about any of the characters. 92% on Rotten? Really?! REALLY?!!!
@wimpie25 That might be the case. Honestly I'm probably going to watch this movie again soon on DVD to gauge how I really feel about it. Sometimes a film like this grows on you during a second viewing. Also, apologies for the harsh response in my last post. I might have misjudged your tone/intention.
@Drluvmuffin The best part of your reaction is that you didn't feel the need to say something insulting about my particular credit, the movie title alone was enough. Genius. Could you post your resume so we can know exactly where you are coming from? Thanks for watching!
@ToddRobertAnderson I think the best part is that I actually own REPLI-KATE....and like it. So..... yep, this is the place we find ourselves..... kinda awkward.
@Drluvmuffin I like the comment you removed better, but I see the comic strength of the new one. Thanks for buying and enjoying Repli-Kate, and thanks for crediting me as the fourth lead even though I'm really the fifth or sixth, depending on whether or not you count the little dog that humps Eugene Levy's leg.
(cont.) Also, I thought the retro feel & soundtrack (not to mention the font) provided a cool and unique feel to the film. Being an LA citizen I also felt it made great use of the location. Anyways, that's what I liked. I can easily see people not enjoying this film, and that's okay. Like I said, I love you guys, keep bring videos. Any thoughts on this?
@JakeTropila Thoughtful answer. I'm confused by my reaction to this movie, actually, versus, like, everyone else's. I think I will wait for it to come onto the small screen in whatever method and try to watch it fresh. I suspect I will still feel the same way but one never knows. It's strange to be rooting for bombast when I'm so numbed by it in most of the genres movies we end up seeing as the Pigs. But I honestly think starting with such a dope/thoughtful car "chase" set up false expectations.
@steedoggydogg Thanks Steve, there have been time where I see films that have gotten near universal acclaim yet I fail to see what's so great about them. Two recent examples I can think of are Precious & Crash (the Paul Haggis one, not the porn one).
@JakeTropila That's a great point about the marketing. Given that our videos are instant reactions to movies we just came out of with no preperation whatsoever, we very well may have been guilty of not seeing the movie for the movie's sake, and only according to its trailers. I had a similar reaction to "The Town" because I was promised a heist movie, not a movie where Ben Affleck talks to a girl a lot. Still, isn't it fair to be disappointed when misled? Thanks for taking the time to write!
@JakeTropila One more thought. I'm also not a huge fan of "homage" pictures, which this certainly is. It's essentially an eighties Michael Mann movie, particularly "Thief" given that the two movies have such similar structure and pacing, but I didn't feel like "Drive" actually brought anything new to the table. For me it's not enough to simply do it again. In some way, the improvisational technique of "yes, and..." has to be employed. I don't feel this one added the "and" to its proceedings.
@ToddRobertAnderson I agree it definitely has that homage feel, but after struggling through a summer of superhero movies I liked the refreshment I found in Drive. To respond to your previous comment, I did like the Town, but I will agree that the love story overshadowed the bank robbing. Still, we did get three good heist scenes out of it. Also, I felt that Brooks' casting in Drive is inspired, particularly because he is not normally threatening in his other films.
@JakeTropila The misleading marketing affected my opinion, which is I think is valid. However, I've been surprised by movies with misleading marketing before. Not this time. For me, the movie failed in its attempt to be art house/homage/whatever because of the ham-fisted tricks it employed - light blooming when they kiss, receding into darkness after a kill, etc. It felt more like style for style's sake, which I'm not opposed to, but I don't think is enough to carry an entire movie. -Skelton
@stoneskely Hey Skelton, I agree that the "tricks" they used were of the utmost basic format, but they worked for me because they were more simple than any CGI nightmare I've watched this summer. As I said in response to Todd's comment I liked the film overall because it was a refreshing picture from an overall dull summer. The director certainly knew what he was doing. I liked Drive very much but I can easily see why some wouldn't like it. It could have been worse, it could been in 3D.
(cont.) western, where the characters stared at each other for several minutes before any violence happened. The slow first half made the grisly violence in the second half more horrifying, because we've been given the time know these characters. I actually liked the scenes of Gosling & Mulligan staring, rather than have them read off hackneyed romantic dialogue. For example, when she asks isn't stunt driving dangerous, his reaction of simply smiling would have been cheapened by any dialogue.
Hey Film Pigs, I'm a long time fan, I've seen & love all your videos, you guys are the best. Normally I agree with what you say, but with Drive, I disagree with your reasonings. I'm not trying to pick any fights here, I'm just explaining why I thought it was a good film, like you asked. First I'd like to say that, as a slow-burn arthouse picture, it was marketed horribly. The trailer did make it seem like an action-packed car chase bonanza, but it wasn't. It's best to compare it to a classic we
i think what happened is you were so excited and had such high expectations based on its high rating on rotten tomatoes that when you saw the movie and it wasn't what you expected, transformer car chases and action porn, for some reason couldn't move past it, so in your anger you completely missed everything good about this movie, like a bunch of monkeys on crack that couldn't enjoy a Chopin concert. I've lost all respect for your opinion after this review
@TheJONEStv Well, you may be right, but we didn't like Transformers either. What I would like to understand, is what exactly were the good things about the movie that we missed. We gave you a few specific reasons why it didn't work for us, and if you can see fit to forgive us for feeling differently from you in our subjective opinions, we would like to hear some specific examples of what worked for you. We're not above being convinced our opinions are sometimes confused. Thanks for watching.
@TheJONEStv well if you have the time listen to slashfilm's podcast ep. 161 its titled drive on iTunes. skip to one hour, thats when the drive review begins. they explain really well why i like the film so much more than i could write on here
@TheJONEStv I listen to those guys, enjoy it. Even when I don't agree with their opinions, they are always thoughtful and fun to hear. I will look forward to them telling me what your opinion is.
@TheJONEStv So, you start out explaining thoughtfully why we might have been mislead... and then say you've lost "all respect for [our] opinion" because of it? If your rigid belief in the absolute truth of your opinion above others' is so relentless yet fragile that one review you don't believe in makes you question that previously-trusted source, you might actually be too unformed a human to watch our one-sided, low-brow videos.
@steedoggydogg Alright fine that was a harsh over reaction. I'll still watch your reviews. We've agreed on pretty much everything else so far. I was angry and shocked that after so many reviews we agreed on and then you decide to hate this one. The cheesiest metaphor I can think of is getting dozens of loving hugs from daddy time after time then suddenly daddy slaps you and tells you he hates you. That's how it felt but it's just a movie right so I'm done with this nonsense.
@TheJONEStv Always bear in mind that our reactions are visceral, and we put them in the vlogs to voice our opinions on movies in an entertaining manner. We appreciate anybody who watches and enjoys us whether or not they agree with us. Some of the more interesting conversations we have are with people who engage in thoughtful debate. -Skelton

I thought the soundtrack and some of the mood elements were cool but overall this was a pretty disappointing flick.

Perhaps the movie appeals more to the European audiences since the story has a European vibe to it.

The reviews are in:
"The mood tricks were so fuckin obvious" (One of the writers of WEEDS after it started to suck)
"It was a really solid opening, then it falls apart" (the bald guy that made the worst MEDAL OF HONOR game in the series)
"It's flabergastingly dull" (The 4th lead in NATIONAL LAMPOONS: REPLI-KATE)
