I don't understand why bands like this and Cradle are popular when others like Wind of the Black Mountains, Ragnarok, Kob, Oath of Cirion, and Hades get very little attention.
@purefuckinghate666 Same goes for every major band in every genre. Why did Cannibal Corpse become so famous, while there are a lot better death metal bands. Why is Korpiklaani the most famous folk metal band, while there are so much better bands. It's just luck, I guess.
how about yall listen to old school BM? it seems here that the only thing that you have is COF AND HECATE. :) both bands are huge, unique , ect. hecate has been a huge part of my life for over ten years. i play black metal and respect true music. COF sold out when i was like 12 years old, and the fact that jons vocals are high doesnt mean he sounds like COF. look more into BM before you start saying bullshit like that. just because the dudes vocals are high doesnt mean hes trying to be like COF
@embersky998 exactly, this lot need to think of Burzum, Mayhem, Immortal, Emperor, all that kind
and @LeonJordison, i do vocals, and i dont disrespect Dani or you, but its pretty turdy of you or anyone else to say stuff about othher bands on here, just listen to the fucking music, please.
@JWickid3DarkChoco yeah they did and i used to be one of those people that thought that. honestly its not just the vocals that cof play off of. it was hecate enthoned's entire style that cof played off of and ultimately bastardized in the end.
Why the fuck is everyone bitching about Dani ripping off this guy?
He didn't rip off shit, everyone has influences first of all, and second of all I've never seen Dani say anything about his vocal influences in an interview, so shut the fuck up because he's never even had a chance to say what they were. As much as I like enthroned, Cradle/Dani Filth is better imo. IMO. Although Dani has a better vocal octave.. If you're a vocalist, you know what I mean. He has 5 ranges or so, this guy has 1 or2.
@LeonJordison i really really doubt he has 5 octave ranges. look for diamanda galas, and in comparison mariah carey. they both have a vocal range of 4 octaves and have a way higher range thendani
I was way off about this, I'll give you that, but Dani actually has a 6 or 7 octave range. This guy probably has 4 or 5. I had literally almost no idea about the ranges back then, now I'm actually pretty informed. Dani is my vocal influence, and I know alot about him. He has more than 5, that's for sure.
@LeonJordison dani filth`s range is ok im a vocalist but this guy has more of a range than dani if you listen 2 both singers live then you will understand me dont get me wrong i like cradle of filth but dani`s pitch and range has deteorated in the last couple of years
Oh yeah, I'll definitely give you that, Dani's range and voice has become total shit right around Thornography lol. But Everything they did in the 90's... Whew. Shit was crazy.
@LeonJordison Nooo this guy defineately has more than one or two, normal untrained singers have ONE or TWO. I think he should have at least 3 or 4? But I personally think Dani's better. But doesnt this guy shriek really high at all?
@LeonJordison Yeah Dani is!!! Hahaha. Freaking 5 octave range, how the fuck do you get that!?
I've only got like 4 :( But I can do dani's shrieks It's actually the same whistle voice thing mariah carey does, just you add a little rasp into it haha.
The vocals style is an evolution from the BBC Sessions and un-released stuff from Martin Walkyier in Sabbat, late 1980's. Sabbat being one of the biggest influences in CoF and UK extreme metal.
que carajo hablan aca no hay quien es mejor o no, simplemente esta canción es muy buena de las mejores en el género black instrumentalmente es de puta madre
I'm not sure but i think Jon's shriek is actually created in a way that is different from Dani's (although the resulting sound is very similar). Dani seems to close his throat and use what I think people refer to as the "false vocal cords" whereas i think Jon keeps his throat more open allowing for more air flow and a sort of reverberation in the upper and rear part of his mouth. his shriek sounds more raspy to me especially on the "upon promethean shores" album.

Jon did teach Dani Filth, it's in the leather bound version of The Gospel of Filth, under Dani's influences, he taught Dani in Secondary school how to do it, when he was around 18 to 20 years of age
i played a gig with these guys back in 96, i was in the unimportant band that went on first, but it was cool, and they let us use their amps too......good stuff
Is more likely that Hecate emulated Cradle, given how Cradle is 2 years older, and they released their first album 2 years earlier as well. However, i don't think it actually cares who's better. They only share the high pitched screams, and even then, there are buckets of bands who use them. Is more of a stylistic matter, and in that respect, is very hard to be objective: it rapidly devolves into a matter of taste. So, Hecate rules, Cradle rules, may the Underlords give both long lives. Period.
@spectralmerc first off I dont like cradle of filth.
@WantonWraith I heard that this vocalist is who taught Dani Filth what he knows. So technically they are based a lot off of Hecate Enthroned. Both are great in my opinion but I prefer Hecate Enthroned.
yeah i read that the singer from H.E. showed dani how to do that, but he does seem to pass it off as his own. not so much anymore because he cant do it as well but on cradles early albums like vempire danis voice was amazing!
Supposedly Jon from H.E. was in Cradle at one time, when they were still doing death metal demos. I guess he taught Dani how to do the high scream, introduced him to black metal, and then Dani kicked him out (probably!) and passed it off as his own! Hah.
Dani's voice was actually ruined by him doing low growls improperly, which means that he lost his high range. A lot of people have come up with various other rumours though, but this theory seems the most valid.
What I am unsure of is the period from which he helped Cradle during Dusk and Her Embrace, and when he left to reform his band, and rename it Hecate Enthroned.
@NicoFilthy Dani didn't start using that vocal style until Total Fucking Darkness in 93, though, and even then rarely. It's pretty widely acknowledged that Jon started doing it first.
@ska2808 not exactly seeing as cof came out first. hectate enthroned has only been around since 1993 cof since 1991. but yeah none the less dani is an egotist.
@kmfdm5 That doesn't make any difference. Cradle were around before, but using a completely different vocal (and musical) style to what they would develop post-1993. I think it was one of the Ryan brothers who credited Jon from Hecate Enthroned with the vocal style.
@ska2808 actually their vocals werent that different just under developed at the time. cof i mean. i think they were more refined at the release of dusk and her embrace
@kmfdm5 You've obviously never listened to their demos, which were almost entirely (poor) death grunts. By the end of Total Fucking Darkness and the release of TPOEMF (1994), Dani had adopted these shrieking vocals. From Jon =)
@kmfdm5 It's not an EP, it's a demo. And that explains why you're so confused XD
Listen to all their demos up until 1993 - most of them are on YouTube (Orgiastic Pleasures Foul, A Pungent And Sexual Miasma and Total Fucking Darkness). Dani pretty much always used death grunts until he learned the technique for high screams from Jon, which he then began to use in Total Fucking Darkness and, more prominently, in their first album, TPOEMF.
@ska2808 well damn you how am i supposed to find it god ive been trying to listen to that demo for several years now *shakes fist* YOU SON OF A BIIITCH!!! DAMN YOOOUUSSSS!!!
@ska2808 Not really. That'd be like saying all metal guitarists rip off Karry King because he was one of the first people to use dark, shredding riffs. Dani sings high, so does Hecate... they both happen to sing the same way, not like either of them had a patent on the idea of singing high, either.
The older cradle of filth albums come close. Infact these guys were somehow rediculed for to much resemblence of cradle back in the day's.( I'm a big fan btw.) Btw I think the cover pic of this album is shot at the same location as the midpage pic of the midian album booklet from cradle.

He did join for a short while as a bassist, or so I've heard. And apparently was involved with the production of Dusk and Her Embrace.

Dani Filth clearly owes a lot to them, yet he seems to be passing his vocal style off as his own!
ska2808 2 years ago 16
yeah i read that the singer from H.E. showed dani how to do that, but he does seem to pass it off as his own. not so much anymore because he cant do it as well but on cradles early albums like vempire danis voice was amazing!
goreXXXwhore 2 years ago

ASurrealEntity 2 years ago
@ska2808 Do research.
Cradle was around first, but there's a history between them and Hecate, and it shouldn't be a case of "oh that's a rip-off."
Both bands have their strong suits.
I like them both.

@ska2808 Cradle Of Filth started in 1991 and Hecate Enthroned started in 1993. Dani Filth's vocal was like that way before Jon..
NicoFilthy 1 year ago
@NicoFilthy Dani didn't start using that vocal style until Total Fucking Darkness in 93, though, and even then rarely. It's pretty widely acknowledged that Jon started doing it first.
ska2808 1 year ago
@ska2808 Listen to Chewing Your Guts from 1992, and you will find the roots of this particular style of vocal use.
NicoFilthy 1 year ago
@ska2808 not exactly seeing as cof came out first. hectate enthroned has only been around since 1993 cof since 1991. but yeah none the less dani is an egotist.
kmfdm5 1 year ago
@kmfdm5 That doesn't make any difference. Cradle were around before, but using a completely different vocal (and musical) style to what they would develop post-1993. I think it was one of the Ryan brothers who credited Jon from Hecate Enthroned with the vocal style.
ska2808 1 year ago
@ska2808 actually their vocals werent that different just under developed at the time. cof i mean. i think they were more refined at the release of dusk and her embrace
kmfdm5 1 year ago
@kmfdm5 You've obviously never listened to their demos, which were almost entirely (poor) death grunts. By the end of Total Fucking Darkness and the release of TPOEMF (1994), Dani had adopted these shrieking vocals. From Jon =)
ska2808 1 year ago
@ska2808 i know about that ep but ive never had the chance to listen to it figured id never find it...damn it.
kmfdm5 1 year ago

@ska2808 Dani Filth is the biggest faggot, I am not surprised people pre-emptively hate metal with that douchefag at the helm.

@VoidBeyondTheRift Implying metal in general isn't incredibly redicuous and gay. That's why we all listen to it!
TalesfromtheCradle 1 year ago
@ska2808 Not really. That'd be like saying all metal guitarists rip off Karry King because he was one of the first people to use dark, shredding riffs. Dani sings high, so does Hecate... they both happen to sing the same way, not like either of them had a patent on the idea of singing high, either.
MetallicStevie 1 year ago
@MetallicStevie "Singing high" and these kinds of vocals are not the same thing.
Plus, it's pretty well known among the scene that Jon from Hecate Enthroned was the bassist for Cradle and taught Dani how to do those vocals.

I like Dimmu Borgir and just discovered these guys. I love symphonic black metal, is there anything else that sounds similar to these guys?
Somethingreallycool 2 years ago
The older cradle of filth albums come close. Infact these guys were somehow rediculed for to much resemblence of cradle back in the day's.( I'm a big fan btw.) Btw I think the cover pic of this album is shot at the same location as the midpage pic of the midian album booklet from cradle.
acidinveins 2 years ago 2
Yeah, I used to be in love with them. I have a poster of Elizabeth Bathory from "Cruelty and the Beast" staring at me right now, hah hah.
Really? I didn't know that (about midian).
