I do not speak this language but I understand its beauty and spirit.New to Maris' music and the plight of her people but I understand discrimination being of Native American descent. It is my wish that someday we will all realize that we are all 1 and that there is no place for hatred of someone simply because of their descent and culture. Practice Love and Awareness. And I love you Mari' for your efforts.Thankyou for your beautiful music and wisdom.
It's funny. Before, the "norwegians" tried to destroy the sami culture with christianity and violence. Now, the sami culture is loved because it's the only norwegian culture thats left. Mari Boine does a nice job bringing us the vibes from a melting -vidde-.
This happend because they thought that kindness and serinity is equal with stupidy. They tried to break us, not knowing that the spirit of our ancestors live within us, just because they had forgotten that everything is connected. If you are close to nature, you will not forget who you are or where you come from from. Your ancestors will make sure of it! That is true life and true love
Thank you so much because you keep u consert here in finland! I can´t speak sami language anymore, because i forgot that because I go to finnis school..., but next year I can speak that again :)
I´m Danish living in Norway and hey why always all that talk about politic...Why not just agree about this is a brilliant film with at beautifull song! :-)
Gentlest indeed! I moved to Norway 5 years ago and the Sami culture charmed me even though I have never been among them up in the North. One day though I dream to be standing by their side as they ask for their independence.
Independence is inevitable. It is the wish of most Samis if not all. Something beautiful that a dark hearted, cruel and racist person like you would never understand.
Why would they get independence? First of all they would lose out on all the money from the Norwegian government. Secondly, the Same people, great as they may be, have not been in Norway for nearly as long as ethnic Norwegians.
It is a proven fact that the Sami people have been living in Middle and Northern Scandinavia long before and nordic tribes got there. Do you really believe that if the barbarous Nordics were there first, they would have just permitted the Samis to settle in that area? When the Sami people get their independence, they will lay claim to the oil reserves in the Arctic sea which would lie in their territorial waters. I doubt they will be in much need of "norwegian government money"
How can Samene lay claim to "territorial waters" when they are an inland tribe of reindeer herders?
What is a proven fact is that Samene never had a nation state, but they are given much autonomy already, and are given a lot of funds, especially to preserve their culture.
You should make a trip there and talk to some real Samer. I think you will find that their living conditions is first class!
Not all samis are/were "inland reindeer herders". There are also sea samis; living and working by the coastal waters of Northern Scandinavia.
Saamis never had a traditional "nation state" because it was never necessary for them. They were nomads and lived in harmony with nature, and didn't know about minerals, territory wars and building armies and governments. Then the Swedish and Norwegian government laid claims to Lappland and Finnmark, and their natural resources.
In the 1700s southern Swedish and Norwegian farmers started migrating up north, up the rivers, in search of new ground and a place to carve out as their own. The Lutheran Governments started trading with and Christianize the Sami. To them the Sami were wild and needed to the word of God and to assimilate with the nation state. Churches were built. Sami children were put in Swedish schools. . . you know the drill.
(Similar to what have happened to other minority peoples, I'm sure. )
Fyi, nivdenhoj: i receive your replies in my email inbox. I do get your point. But seems like you should be directing your replies to "eilirudy". . . I added the comment on 'sea samis' and the governments historically wanting Samis to assimilate. /Thnx

I am not saying authorities didn't oppress Samene in the past.
I am saying that it is ridiculous for you, someone who has lived in Norway for 5 years and hasn't even been to Kautokeino or Karasjok, to claim independence on behalf of a tribe who did not ask for it, and is quite content.

Sami equates to Sissu.
Courage in the face of winter, Courage in the face of danger, Courage in fhe face of life.
The Laplander way of life consists entirely of courage.
This is my way as well.
(Hmm)
Though not among the reindeer.. I guess it has more to do with automobiles than reindeer.

If we were to begin redrawing the world map based on 300 year old borders
then Florida and Puerto Rico should become Spanish territories. Norway should regain suzerainty over Iceland and Greenland.
There are people out there who deserve their own nation state. People who are oppressed now. Look at the Palestine, West Sahara, Tibet.
But you choose to "stand up for" Samene, an exalted minority in the country with the number 1 standard of living. C'mon, you can do better than that!
