I've been selling roofs for for the family business 32 years...never crossed my mind to use Obama's name to help. :-) Selling to homeowners (voters), that might be a decent strategy, because as we now know, 53% of them are dumber'n a rock. But most business owners with flat roofs aren't nearly stupid enough to buy anything that has Obama's name attached to it.
@red Agreed.I would be leery to support any particular party through a business, since you are bound to offend half the population. This project was at my home however and I was trying to support and promote Steven Chu's white roof initiative. It would also be great if Americans could objectively review a president's policy on a case by case basis. Rather then just hating him because foxnews said so. Like the old saying goes, even a broken watch is right twice a day. Not that obama is broken.
@the43k Oh make no mistake, Obama is badly broken.
I'm fortunate in that 32 years in the roofing business has afforded me the opportunity to say what I think politically without it costing me. I think Obama is a highly destructive clown, and if that offends any of my customers, they can use someone else.
However, that is highly unlikely as we do only large strip centers and 90% of owners smart enough to own a strip shopping center, also know that Obama is an anti-business clown.
My guess is that you're a Walmart republican who spends 2 much time watching foxnews. Obama is so moderate its unfortunate. How do I know this?Well, the right wing nut jobs hate him and the liberal left is pissed he's not doing enough.I only wish you and your "smart owners", understood that GWB destroyed this nation in so many ways its going 2 take decades 2 put the pieces back together. But if it helps u go 2 sleep at night that its somehow Obamas fault and that he's bad for business.Good 4 U.
@the43k Scary that you actually believe any of that. You're a shining example of what is wrong with this country.
You're obviously pretty much a rookie at the roofing business - trust me, it shows in so many ways. Once you have managed to stay in business for a length of time (doubtful) you will learn that Obama'a socialist idealism is contrary to the free enterprise spirit that built this country.
I'd be shocked if you last long enough in business to learn that lesson.
Even though I am not sure our HOA would react to a white roof, if the only goal of this is to lower the attic temperatures, then getting 2 - 3 solar powered vents on the roof might get the job done too. Except the decent ones cost around $500 and that doesn't include installation.
@whitesites not as effective. The point being, its always better to prevent the heat gain rather than to mediate it afterwards. Plus mediating it, take far longer. But the truth be said, this is a far better application for commercial flat roofs.
Great Video. I would love to do that to my house in Texas, but I am a little worried about having a white roof hurt my home's resale value, plus the HOA might not be too happy about my roof being white while the rest of the neghboorhood being asphalt shingles.
I think the better alternative to painting your house's roof white would just be easier to plant a few fast growing trees in the right area's because trees provide natural cooling and shade without the major expense.
@Jkirk3279 That"s what I want. I don't plan on mounting solar anything on my home. Solar stuff can be put on poles outside the back of the property. Painting house roofs white looks too dated looking plus its a big negitive on your homes value to add something that is unattractive looking. Geothermal can solve the heat issues if you can afford to do it.
Has anyone thought about painting their house with this? My house is ready for a new paint job, I live in AZ, thinking of painting my house with this. Wonder if it will have an effect.
When I had a townhouse in Scotsdale I thought about painting the whole house with a reflective paint. I found that most paints can only be used on a flat surface or one with a gentle slope. CoolnCoat is one that can be used on a flat, sloped or vertical surface. There may be others. Good luck.
This can be achieved using a powered attic exaust fan either solar to replace your roof vents or it can be thermostat controlled with far more dramatic results and without the use of a clearly unsightly product that I guarantee will not hold up over time as well as the contributing pollution and chemicals used in its manuacture. Your attic is a good candidate, simply ensure that the attic insulation is cleared from the sophit areas, the sofit has enough vents in it and power vent the roof.
@techhidotnet The solar panels defeat the purpose of this material because the panal will preven all of the suns lighfrom contacting the roof surface where they are installed.

Was considering a re-roof, but this looks like a cheap n dirty alternative. Also expect it to work well here in the deep south where A/C cost is a lot more than heating. Check out "cool-coat" elastomeric roof coat.
Oh, I'll bet the neighbors in Princeton Junction are thrilled with the white monstrosity on the block. Good thing you can roof over this stuff.
All in all a good video if you're trying to do an inexpensive roof fix, but I don't think any HOAs would like this roof.
hate to P*** on every ones fireworks. did any one notice only onehalf of the roof is painted. and that the thermal image showed both sides of the roof to be at the same temperature!?!?!?!? and in the last roof measurement the room was at 80 and the roof was only 74 !?!?!? i thought heat rises.
I agree with your Ideas with this product. However when all said and done this is no more than a coating over shingles. Even with the Base coat first to fill in all the nooks and carnies, the shingles are just not a solid base surface to coat over with out a membrane to separate the two. Such as a Polyester mat. Shingles just have too much expansion and contraction through out the year. A coating like this works great on metal roofs and such.
I painted my roof last week with hydrated lime mixed with water. a 50 pound bag costs about 7 dollars.(available hardw.store). I bought 2 bags to cover my 1000 square foot house plus carport. my attic temperatures went down from about 140 degrees down to below 100 degrees. my house stays below 82 degrees all day and all night long now. I think what i used might wash off after a summer or 2... but it only costed me less than 15 bucks!!! My house used to be 10 degrees hotter (with AC off)
@johnnecron Yes it is called WHITEWASH. It is a cheap grade of paint made from lime and water. I once painted my inside basement walls with it. It worked superbly and repels bugs too. It dries a BRILLIANT WHITE even though it looks gray-ish when first painted. You can find my article on "builditsolar-dot-com" under the title "davids white roof experiment".
@1framistan...no, it's not White Wash. It's dries more like a latex paint but thicker. It really works. I helped a guy do his roof and it made a huge difference in temp on the inside.
@1framistan yes the old ways are the best ways :-) by adding small amounts natural curd cheese(smooth) you can make it weather resistant. the kasein protine causes waterproofing. no joke no it doesnt smell
If you don't want to put it on your roof don't. But you're wrong. The energy savings in the summer can be massive. It also has insulative properties so it will prevent heat loss in the winter (heat trying to escape out thru roof). Lastly, the sun is at a far lower angle in the winter and out for a shorter period of time. You are not getting significant heat gain thru your roof during winter. Japan has used this produce for decades with millions of hours of data to prove it works.
43k - You are catching a lot of heat on this, but I just wanted to say I appreciate the info on this - very helpful. Did the video say this covering will last for 20 years? Seems much longer than standard shigles would last. How has it held up since you painted it on? JK
@BLUCKY217 In the winter - in the northern states of North America - Your home - which sits on the earth is "angled" differently from the summer - hence the sun's rays do not hit the surface of your home / earth as direct. A home in the northern states does not benefit from a darker roof in the winter. If you don't believe me go up into your attic in a couple months - if it is warm it is because your insulation is poor / not from the sun rays warming up your attic via the roof tiles / shingles
@BLUCKY217 Dude, I don't know where YOU live, but in NJ I suspect roofs are covered in snow most of the Winter and the dark roof doesn't absorb any heat covered in snow.
This guy talks an impressive amount of crap. It's obvious that this solution will work, for the same reason that all Greek people paint their houses white, it DOES make the inside cooler. However, these claims about the space shuttle and such are just crap. It's white paint people, that's all! In fact I reckon cladding your entire house with mirrors would have much greater effect, AND they'd be removable in winter. You heard it here first!
@clickradiouk It is somewhat bizarre that in the same paragraph you state that the product works but on the other hand I'm full of crap. I spent a lot of time using science and math to prove and document the capabilities of this product. Which mind you, I don't work for them. I'm a homeowner who found this product and applied it to my house. BTW, its not regular paint. It has four ceramics in it. It acts and behaves differently then your 15 dollar can of paint.
I also recanted my comment about its connection with the space shuttle right on the video!!! Although the science behind it is the same. So I guess and apology doesn't even count anymore??? This product is different than most because it reflects away heat but also acts as an insulator. I suggest anyone go onto SPI Coatings website and review it for yourself. As for the mirror idea, I suggest you get down to the patent office ASAP.
@the43k As commenters are trying to point out, the effect is almost entirely due to the reflectivity of the paint, which has nothing to due with the insulative value of that the ceramic material does (or doesn't!) supply. The folks that make this kind of paint do a clever sleight-of-hand trick regarding the "technology" they use. At the thicknesses of paint, only an aerogel would work (tho expensive and damn hard to work with). Good idea, but save the premium cost of this paint for elsewhere.
Yes, this coating, made for this type of application has ceramics that are "designed" for lack of a better word for mostly reflective purposes. However, I've also used their HSC (hot surface coating) against the sheathing between studs. This product uses different ceramics to prevent heat absorption. For instance, I hit it with a torch for over 20 seconds and could immediately touch it with my hand. I don't work SPI coatings, but i suggest going on their website and reading about it.
Great, Where did you purchase this? and what is the exact spelling of the product. I've googled SUPERTHERM, and there appears to be many different types. I want to buy it but i'm not sure which one is the best..... or the one you bought...........
Great, Where did you purchase this? and what is the exact spelling of the product. I've googled SUPERTHERM, and there appears to be many different types. I want to buy it but i'm not sure which one is the best..... or the one you bought...........
This is a scam. Make sure you google until you are satisfied that a product like this is a san or not. In fact this and many others like this one touting the same thing are scams.
@motorchicked It would be great if you provided some facts or concerns, rather then some unsubstantiated opinion. I thought I spent a serious amount of time collecting data and providing evidence that the product greatly prevented thermal transfer. This is my house, I don't work for Supertherm and I benefit from the effects it provides everyday. Are you suggesting I lied or modified my temperature readings?
This product has thermal properties, so its not bad in the winter. It will resist heat leaving thru the roof. Winter BTU's into house are limited anyway. Regardless, your savings is so great during the summer it would out weigh the loss in the winter.. But there isn't any.
this sound perfect for the summer time. now my question is how is it on the winter time when the tempetures are bellow 0 degrees? does it absorb heat to help reduce the use of the furnace or will the house be colder than usual?
I don't know, this seems like a scam as far as cost goes. What was the price of this product before Secretary Chu brought white roofs up? When it rains umbrella prices go up sort of thing. Also, how old are the patents? When they expire I'm sure the price will drop considerably making it affordable for anyone. Does anyone have information on the patents that make up this product?
@exodous02 Scam no, is the cost overinflated? I don't know. But as stated, its not paint, it has 4 different ceramics and is non-toxic. High quality house paint is 50 dollars a gallon. Supertherm is twice the price, don't think that is out of the realm of possibility.
@the43k Yes, for Americans, but this doesn't help the third world much. I lived in Brazil for two years and I did notice that white roofs is popular. I was a missionary there so I moved every 12 weeks to a new area and in the summer months white roofs helped a lot. Do you have a link to what ceramics are used and what processes are used and what exactly the patents are? I would like to know if it's possible for other companies to make a similar product at a cheaper cost. I can't find info.
@Umaxen Yes, but SPI makes a coating that is better for thermal transfer, rather than supertherm that is combination of reflect-ability and insulative coating.
I coated my shingle roof last year to make the roof last longer.
After I was done I realized that it had sealed the lower edge of the shingles.
Any rain going down between the shingles could get trapped under the shingle and since the bottom of the shingle was sealed, the water could build up under the shingle up to the nails or staple and cause a leak.
I had to go over the whole roof and fill up the gap between the shingles.
When you spray this materials over shingles, what happens the shingles stay cool and the adhesive in the back of the shingles used to hold them together dose not work. This results in the shingles to curl and during a wind storm the shingles rip off.
First of all, you can apply this product after the shingles have been subjected to warm temperatures in order to warm the adhesive. Second, even if you somehow applied the super therm immediately to the shingles, the roof will still warm to about 5 to 15 degrees above ambient temperature, so I suspect this would be warm enough to make them stick.
It will vary with application, 1 gallon does about 100 Sq feet. Gallon price is about 90 to 100 dollars. Per gallon price will be better with larger quantity. Again, many variables, I would speak to supplier.
@the43k Wow, that's pretty expensive. My roof's 20 yrs old and was hoping to prolong its life with this system. The website says you need to put down a special base coat, 2 layers of super therm and a protective coat on top. Did you use these other coats? And if so, how much did they cost?
Actually it was falsely advertised and compared to NASA by others, I was misinformed, so out of my desire to be truthful and honest, I added the correction.
If you really want to help the environment, get rid of your air conditioner all together and live like our grand parents did.
Now that would change things, wouldn't it?
PS. I admire products like this, but because a white or silver roof looks odd on most naturally stained homes we simply increased all of our soffits sizes by 6 inches, and got the exact same result. Most builders make the soffits too small. Grampa's trick. Year round comfort - Savana style
This product can be used underneath the roof below the shingles prior to shingle installation or sprayed from the attic on the sheathing and rafters. As for larger size soffits, yes that would help, but not nearly like the supertherm. I don't care how big your soffits are, they are not venting a massive shingle area thats 170 degrees.
Better yet, contact David Cross of SG Blocks. who builds homes out of steel shipping containers in places like Florida. These metal boxes would be literal ovens without the Supertherm that they use. It is not the same as the elastomeric products you are comparing it to. Do your research.
lazarow01, you appear to know - and be interested in knowing - little or nothing about this specific product. So why do you keep posting? Buscate un novio, compay, y relajate.
I stated several times that it is the R value equivalent. Regardless, it provides excellent protection against heat infiltration. It is not misleading whatsoever. I think the data shows very convincingly that it is a fantastic product. Do you dispute the temperatures I provided? It also is not venerable to moisture. As everyone knows, once fiberglass gets wet, its about useless. I suggest you start providing facts with your opinions if we want to have a serious discussion.
I own a insulation company and cool roof company in CA and when you lead someone to think there getting r-19 for what you have is a glorafied elastomeric coating that is a complete fabrication even if you put it on an inch thick -you need to check YOUR facts
For one, the angle of the sun in the winter is far lower and the amount of heat gain is greatly reduced. 2nd this is not paint, it's a insulative coating. It will keep the heat inside the house from escaping thru the roof.
i have been applying white roof coatings for 10 years. its a great biz to be in. to apply on shingles is great for the reflectance bit i would be hard pressed to put any water proofed warrenty . most of our applications are on com buildings .
I just went to the CRRC website the 3-year results have not been posted yet. If this is not the Super therm, can you please direct me to the correct place?
I'm don't deny your testing isn't accurate; however, the only one I'm interested in is the CRRC 3-year weathering test. If your drop in reflectance is only 1-5% then you have a winner. If not, then you're the same as everyone else.
The EPA Energy Star is the only test which is seriously flawed. Manufacturers rate their own products. The CRRC test is 3rd party which provides more accurate results.
Yes, the SUPER THERM has been tested under the CRRC. The initial testing was on Solar only which is the Visual Light or short wave testing and the number was 83%. In the three year retest, the drop in reflectivity was 0.6%.
Interestingly, after 10 years, there was no drop in performance as tested by a Japanese architectural firm. Later, the same firm tested a 15 year old roof and found it only lost 8% of the initial reflectivity performance for solar.
The ceramic make up of SUPER THERM is not dependent on reflectivity alone. The ceramic blend does not absorb heat which is the main purpose of the coating. Reflecting heat off the surface is important, but more important is the ability of the coating to resist the loading of heat to block the heat load to the surface or envelope of the building. If one blocks initial "heat load", the true insulation effect has been met.
The "R" rating is purely a measurement of the rate the heat is transferring through a material such as fiber, foam or other R rated materials. Would one rather have a material that measures how fast heat transfers to the interior of a home "or" would you rather have a 95% initial heat block that only allowed a 5% heat load all day. Air currents in attics could easily carry any heat transfer during the day at such a low rate.
I'm not questioning your data. However, just about all other cool roof manufacturers also have those same qualifications.
My question to you is this: what is your drop in solar reflectance after three-years? If it's 1-5% I agree that you have a great system. If it's 10-30% it's in the normal range of most systems.
I appreciate the complement where applicable, but I will let the data I collected and the certifications below speak for themselves... Super Therm® is UL, FM, DNV, ABS, IMO, USDA, Energy Star, ICC, California Home Furnishings, and U.S. Coast Guard and CRRC approved to meet criteria. This product has also been applied to over 70,000,000 sq/ft of roofing in japan and all of the 70 million sq ft has been field tested and data logged. I can and will provide anyone who requests to see all data.
Cool roofs work but not because of ceramics. Only glass has a solar reflectance of 95 not coatings. Arcylic coatings with high levels of TiO2 can maybe get to 90.
The intent is good but I'm not sure about the coating.
I've been selling roofs for for the family business 32 years...never crossed my mind to use Obama's name to help. :-) Selling to homeowners (voters), that might be a decent strategy, because as we now know, 53% of them are dumber'n a rock. @1framistan...no, it's not White Wash. It's dries more like a latex paint but thicker. It really works. I helped a guy do his roof and it made a huge difference in temp on the inside.
wetweasel56 1 year ago
@1framistan yes the old ways are the best ways :-) by adding small amounts natural curd cheese(smooth) you can make it weather resistant. the kasein protine causes waterproofing. no joke no it doesnt smell

NJ has more cold months and the dark roof would save u more money in the long run. So what's your point?
I only need to run at AC 2.5 months vs running the heating system the rest of the year...
BLUCKY217 1 year ago
If you don't want to put it on your roof don't. But you're wrong. The energy savings in the summer can be massive. It also has insulative properties so it will prevent heat loss in the winter (heat trying to escape out thru roof). Lastly, the sun is at a far lower angle in the winter and out for a shorter period of time. You are not getting significant heat gain thru your roof during winter. Japan has used this produce for decades with millions of hours of data to prove it works.
the43k 1 year ago 7
43k - You are catching a lot of heat on this, but I just wanted to say I appreciate the info on this - very helpful. Did the video say this covering will last for 20 years? Seems much longer than standard shigles would last. How has it held up since you painted it on? JK

@the43k And don't forget, in wintertime, roofs are often white anyway (snow, right?)
esandeen 11 months ago
@the43k your crazy your attic has eve vents to the outside, all your heat escapes.
lucy327rss 10 months ago
@BLUCKY217 In the winter - in the northern states of North America - Your home - which sits on the earth is "angled" differently from the summer - hence the sun's rays do not hit the surface of your home / earth as direct. A home in the northern states does not benefit from a darker roof in the winter. If you don't believe me go up into your attic in a couple months - if it is warm it is because your insulation is poor / not from the sun rays warming up your attic via the roof tiles / shingles
dieselplow 1 year ago
@BLUCKY217 Dude, I don't know where YOU live, but in NJ I suspect roofs are covered in snow most of the Winter and the dark roof doesn't absorb any heat covered in snow.

This guy talks an impressive amount of crap. It's obvious that this solution will work, for the same reason that all Greek people paint their houses white, it DOES make the inside cooler. However, these claims about the space shuttle and such are just crap. It's white paint people, that's all! In fact I reckon cladding your entire house with mirrors would have much greater effect, AND they'd be removable in winter. You heard it here first!
clickradiouk 1 year ago
@clickradiouk It is somewhat bizarre that in the same paragraph you state that the product works but on the other hand I'm full of crap. I spent a lot of time using science and math to prove and document the capabilities of this product. Which mind you, I don't work for them. I'm a homeowner who found this product and applied it to my house. BTW, its not regular paint. It has four ceramics in it. It acts and behaves differently then your 15 dollar can of paint.
the43k 1 year ago
I also recanted my comment about its connection with the space shuttle right on the video!!! Although the science behind it is the same. So I guess and apology doesn't even count anymore??? This product is different than most because it reflects away heat but also acts as an insulator. I suggest anyone go onto SPI Coatings website and review it for yourself. As for the mirror idea, I suggest you get down to the patent office ASAP.

@the43k I plan on using old cd discs to reflect all that sunlight.
i am taking donations for all unplayable dvds and cds
johnnecron 1 year ago
@the43k As commenters are trying to point out, the effect is almost entirely due to the reflectivity of the paint, which has nothing to due with the insulative value of that the ceramic material does (or doesn't!) supply. The folks that make this kind of paint do a clever sleight-of-hand trick regarding the "technology" they use. At the thicknesses of paint, only an aerogel would work (tho expensive and damn hard to work with). Good idea, but save the premium cost of this paint for elsewhere.
ceramicsociety 1 year ago
Yes, this coating, made for this type of application has ceramics that are "designed" for lack of a better word for mostly reflective purposes. However, I've also used their HSC (hot surface coating) against the sheathing between studs. This product uses different ceramics to prevent heat absorption. For instance, I hit it with a torch for over 20 seconds and could immediately touch it with my hand. I don't work SPI coatings, but i suggest going on their website and reading about it.

This is a scam. Make sure you google until you are satisfied that a product like this is a san or not. In fact this and many others like this one touting the same thing are scams.
motorchicked 1 year ago
@motorchicked It would be great if you provided some facts or concerns, rather then some unsubstantiated opinion. I thought I spent a serious amount of time collecting data and providing evidence that the product greatly prevented thermal transfer. This is my house, I don't work for Supertherm and I benefit from the effects it provides everyday. Are you suggesting I lied or modified my temperature readings?

@the43k What we want to know is how much is this miracle whip per gallon.
I dont see you braggin on the price. Carpet bagger LOL
johnnecron 1 year ago
This product has thermal properties, so its not bad in the winter. It will resist heat leaving thru the roof. Winter BTU's into house are limited anyway. Regardless, your savings is so great during the summer it would out weigh the loss in the winter.. But there isn't any.
the43k 1 year ago
this sound perfect for the summer time. now my question is how is it on the winter time when the tempetures are bellow 0 degrees? does it absorb heat to help reduce the use of the furnace or will the house be colder than usual?
miguelduque 1 year ago
I don't know, this seems like a scam as far as cost goes. What was the price of this product before Secretary Chu brought white roofs up? When it rains umbrella prices go up sort of thing. Also, how old are the patents? When they expire I'm sure the price will drop considerably making it affordable for anyone. Does anyone have information on the patents that make up this product?
exodous02 1 year ago
@exodous02 Scam no, is the cost overinflated? I don't know. But as stated, its not paint, it has 4 different ceramics and is non-toxic. High quality house paint is 50 dollars a gallon. Supertherm is twice the price, don't think that is out of the realm of possibility.
the43k 1 year ago
@the43k Yes, for Americans, but this doesn't help the third world much. I lived in Brazil for two years and I did notice that white roofs is popular. I was a missionary there so I moved every 12 weeks to a new area and in the summer months white roofs helped a lot. Do you have a link to what ceramics are used and what processes are used and what exactly the patents are? I would like to know if it's possible for other companies to make a similar product at a cheaper cost. I can't find info.
exodous02 1 year ago
@exodous02 Go to SPICoatings website... that is the producer of this product.

Murphy's Law.
artman102 1 year ago
thanks
heroknaderi 1 year ago
When you spray this materials over shingles, what happens the shingles stay cool and the adhesive in the back of the shingles used to hold them together dose not work. This results in the shingles to curl and during a wind storm the shingles rip off.
Great idea on flat surfaces but not on shingles
shabhast 1 year ago
First of all, you can apply this product after the shingles have been subjected to warm temperatures in order to warm the adhesive. Second, even if you somehow applied the super therm immediately to the shingles, the roof will still warm to about 5 to 15 degrees above ambient temperature, so I suspect this would be warm enough to make them stick.

Cost per sq ft?
macrumpton 2 years ago
I would contact supplier for exact figures....
It will vary with application, 1 gallon does about 100 Sq feet. Gallon price is about 90 to 100 dollars. Per gallon price will be better with larger quantity. Again, many variables, I would speak to supplier.
the43k 2 years ago
@the43k Wow, that's pretty expensive. My roof's 20 yrs old and was hoping to prolong its life with this system. The website says you need to put down a special base coat, 2 layers of super therm and a protective coat on top. Did you use these other coats? And if so, how much did they cost?
Thanks

One More Thing..........
Year round comfort - Savana style
iproxi 2 years ago
This product can be used underneath the roof below the shingles prior to shingle installation or sprayed from the attic on the sheathing and rafters. As for larger size soffits, yes that would help, but not nearly like the supertherm. I don't care how big your soffits are, they are not venting a massive shingle area thats 170 degrees.
the43k 2 years ago
Better yet, contact David Cross of SG Blocks. who builds homes out of steel shipping containers in places like Florida. These metal boxes would be literal ovens without the Supertherm that they use. It is not the same as the elastomeric products you are comparing it to. Do your research.

the r value is completly false r-19 for that amount of mils?
lazarow01 2 years ago
I stated several times that it is the R value equivalent. Regardless, it provides excellent protection against heat infiltration. It is not misleading whatsoever. I think the data shows very convincingly that it is a fantastic product. Do you dispute the temperatures I provided? It also is not venerable to moisture. As everyone knows, once fiberglass gets wet, its about useless. I suggest you start providing facts with your opinions if we want to have a serious discussion.
the43k 2 years ago
I own a insulation company and cool roof company in CA and when you lead someone to think there getting r-19 for what you have is a glorafied elastomeric coating that is a complete fabrication even if you put it on an inch thick -you need to check YOUR facts

It is sold thru distributers/installers. Where do you live?
the43k 2 years ago
I live in Chico California, but maybe I am not at the correct website. Is it from Eagle Coatings?
Olga3939 2 years ago
For one, the angle of the sun in the winter is far lower and the amount of heat gain is greatly reduced. 2nd this is not paint, it's a insulative coating. It will keep the heat inside the house from escaping thru the roof.
the43k 2 years ago
the roof will reflect light in the winter when you want a warm roof. What do you think?
wyattlisadana 2 years ago
i have been applying white roof coatings for 10 years. its a great biz to be in. to apply on shingles is great for the reflectance bit i would be hard pressed to put any water proofed warrenty . most of our applications are on com buildings .
tizan455 2 years ago
I just went to the CRRC website the 3-year results have not been posted yet. If this is not the Super therm, can you please direct me to the correct place?
Thank you.
Tomahawk11 2 years ago
I'm don't deny your testing isn't accurate; however, the only one I'm interested in is the CRRC 3-year weathering test. If your drop in reflectance is only 1-5% then you have a winner. If not, then you're the same as everyone else.
The EPA Energy Star is the only test which is seriously flawed. Manufacturers rate their own products. The CRRC test is 3rd party which provides more accurate results.
Tomahawk11 2 years ago
Yes, the SUPER THERM has been tested under the CRRC. The initial testing was on Solar only which is the Visual Light or short wave testing and the number was 83%. In the three year retest, the drop in reflectivity was 0.6%.
Interestingly, after 10 years, there was no drop in performance as tested by a Japanese architectural firm. Later, the same firm tested a 15 year old roof and found it only lost 8% of the initial reflectivity performance for solar.
the43k 2 years ago
The ceramic make up of SUPER THERM is not dependent on reflectivity alone. The ceramic blend does not absorb heat which is the main purpose of the coating. Reflecting heat off the surface is important, but more important is the ability of the coating to resist the loading of heat to block the heat load to the surface or envelope of the building. If one blocks initial "heat load", the true insulation effect has been met.
the43k 2 years ago
The "R" rating is purely a measurement of the rate the heat is transferring through a material such as fiber, foam or other R rated materials. Would one rather have a material that measures how fast heat transfers to the interior of a home "or" would you rather have a 95% initial heat block that only allowed a 5% heat load all day. Air currents in attics could easily carry any heat transfer during the day at such a low rate.

r-value is false you shouldnt tell that its misleading
lazarow01 2 years ago
I'm not questioning your data. However, just about all other cool roof manufacturers also have those same qualifications.
My question to you is this: what is your drop in solar reflectance after three-years? If it's 1-5% I agree that you have a great system. If it's 10-30% it's in the normal range of most systems.
Good luck....
Tomahawk11 2 years ago
FYI..I don't sell or work for Supertherm. Here is 1/8 of the data they provide on their site.
Mitsubishi Material- 26 degrees C (47 degrees F) reduction in roof surface temperature
Panasonic - Matsushita Electric- 24 degrees C (43 degrees F) reduction in surface temperature
Architectural review on 10-year aged roof and found no loss of reflectivity
15-year test of roof and found it was still 76% of reflectivity when new
the43k 2 years ago
4. Energy Star Program Approved Partner/ Approved Product
a. Only 0.6% drop in reflectivity over a 3 year roof test period (2% over 10 years).
5. ICC (International Code Council) BOCA Legacy Report.
6. USDA (United States Dept. of Agriculture)
a. USDA approved product for use inside food facilities.
the43k 2 years ago
There are only about six quality cool roof products within the USA and unfortunately this isn't one of them.
Ceramic additives have been disputed by the DOE.
Having said this, you're right in just about everything you say on your video. And, we do need to have more cool roofs out there.
Tomahawk11 2 years ago
I appreciate the complement where applicable, but I will let the data I collected and the certifications below speak for themselves... Super Therm® is UL, FM, DNV, ABS, IMO, USDA, Energy Star, ICC, California Home Furnishings, and U.S. Coast Guard and CRRC approved to meet criteria. This product has also been applied to over 70,000,000 sq/ft of roofing in japan and all of the 70 million sq ft has been field tested and data logged. I can and will provide anyone who requests to see all data.
the43k 2 years ago
Cool roofs work but not because of ceramics. Only glass has a solar reflectance of 95 not coatings. Arcylic coatings with high levels of TiO2 can maybe get to 90.
The intent is good but I'm not sure about the coating.
Tomahawk11 2 years ago
I would ask that you investigate this product first. If you like, I can provide you with all the data.
