I noticed extreme frustration from my kids. Kids who were beginning to hate their teacher and hate math. Kids would call my son every nite to get him to explain it to them because they couldn't figure it out. (My son was able to figure it out on his own but he was the rare few who could)
He didn't benefit, his PSAT scores didn't reflect an advantage to learning this way.
My kids fell victim to this philosophy for a short time before I pulled them out of their prior school. The teacher used this approach. I saw this first hand.
Here is what she says that's important...it takes 5 weeks to do what could take 2 weeks if she just taught them.
THIS is a Theodore Sizer Coalition of Essential Schools philosophy of teaching, like Big Picture schools, and the 'investigation' method is an abject failure! This poor teacher, like many of, have been BRAINWASHED to dumbing down the kids....
I wonder if we asked med students to figure out how to become doctors, how long that would take. Absurd
