  • ‎28 years ago from race day 2011, this remains an all-time favorite of mine when Tom Sneva, George Bignotti, Dan Cotter et al beat Uncle Roger's "Unfair Advantage" with their own old school styles, just wish Marco Andretti who came oh so close in 2006 could do that against Penske or Ganassi nowadays, it was also my first ABC TV exposure to The Greatest Spectacle, thanks Jim McKay and Sam Posey, best ever Indy 500 announcers!

  • This was a popular win by a very popular driver.

  • I remember feeling so good for Tom Sneva. In the 1981 Indy 500, Jackie Stewart called Sneva "a bridesmaid" also. I'm glad he finally won one.

  • I saw this live in May, 1983. I had to wait almost 27 years until tonight to see the ending again

    2002damatta6- Thank you so much!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I was a Sneva fan and was there for this great win, and have waited for years to see it again!

  • It was a popular win for a popular guy.

  • I was so happy for Sneva that year, finally winning the big one! I especially loved him getting by those cheating Unsers! Uncle Bobby was a cheater and so were Big and Little Al!

  • @SIGMAMAN69 i was a kid in the 80's and loved the unsers...the galles team that little al drove for was based in New Mexico were i lived...what did they do to be cheaters...i honestly dont know...not sure i want too lol...

  • @tonip420 Surely you remember Bobby passing 11 cars in 1981! USAC, who should have flagged him right then and there, screwed that up completely! Two years later, Little Al tries to block Sneva, in violation of the "move over" flag, to help his daddy out who, instead of chiding his son, actually praised him! True winners don't resort to that!

  • @SIGMAMAN69 yeah i was a little too young to remember that....but you have to admit little al's battle with emo in 89' and his 92' win were memorable and great days for indy!

  • @tonip420 That was a great race I must admit.

  • Sneva blew his doors off.

  • Al Jr was trying to hold up Sneva - Jr jumped the restart and placed himself between his father and Sneva to help his dad win by blocking Sneva. He was actually penalized for this move. But Sneva had the much better car and it was only a matter of time.
