  • Interesting Fact: In the early to mid Eighties, Japan was obsessed with Paul Newman. The blond hair, the blue eyes, and chiseled features were all considered very handsome. There was even a "Paul Newman" edition of the Nissan Skyline!

  • Double nostalgia! ç___ç As born on the early 80s and as been in tokyo long enough to leave my heart there ...

So weird not seen girls with coell phones attacched as decoration for cell straps, ehhhhhm, no cell phones decorated with cell straps, cough

Aaaawwww, can't wait to go back there ç____ç

  • Man, so much have changed from the 1980's in Tokyo.

  • No Suica cards back then! Not even automated ticket gates. Wow.

  • The JR ticket machines are EXACTLY the same. Wow.

Heading to Tokyo in a couple weeks. Been there before, as well as Hiroshima and Fukuoka. But it seems like it's a pale shade of what it was in the 80's. Wish I had a time machine!

  • I recognise this is underground of Shinjuku station.i had benn working there for a few years. wow...it makes me cry...a swich board or ticket vender machine? it is awesome. Switch is round shape...I know its ridicurous to get excited about. But i cant help it..

  • BTW, does anyone know what's the name of this song in the video?

  • "Hey DJ" by World's Famous Supreme Team

  • THX!! Sounds like a tune from the 80's

  • Great quality video to say it was made in the 80s

  • i had to subscribe, your videos are totally awesome!

  • This is SO totally sweet. I'm really into the Japan of the '80s, and didn't think someone'd have videos like this of their time there from back then! THANKS!

    also, this'd be the year Ranma was first released ^^;

  • Hey, I'm glad you liked the vids. I think I have enough footage to do a couple of more uploads. Stay tuned.

  • @Tenraiden

Also the anime City Hunter. ^^

    And many others ...

  • I was an 80's Kid.. in Tokyo..

    We may have crossed paths!!!

I wonder if I'm in these videos?

it was great meeting you the other day!

  • Thanks for entertaining us last week! It was fun and a pleasure to meet you.

BTW, I think you are much too young for us to have crossed paths back in the 80s!! But take a look, maybe you are in there somewhere... ;-)

  • Are there going to be anymore 80's Japan videos? It has been way too long and I need my fix. :)

  • sorry to keep you waiting. i think there will be a couple more, i just haven't had the opportunity to edit them up yet.... 'must have patience, Grasshopper'!

  • Sounds good! :)

  • like the 'risky business' get-up!!

  • I wasn't even born then but the music is hilariously great. the video is golden too.

  • Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the vids!

  • I was born in 80s so i really didn't enjoy that years but something inside me makes me love them! Thank you for posting these videos.

  • Yes, the 80s were good times for me - this time in Japan especially!

  • wow.... I was a kid when u originally shot this, but the musical selection is SO CHOICE! This brings back memories. Thanks so much for posting!

  • Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you so much for this seriously I was only born in 1987 but ive taken a liking to 80s era japan such as music from japan back then and animation from the 80s and i wish I had the chance to go back then.

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • Everything, but my images seem to miss. When I am eight years old. Japan Times headline "Soviet" nostalgic characters. And you seem like a cheerful beer in one hand while walking.

  • Thank you for watching and for the comment.

    見てくれてありがとございました!

  • dude, I wish I could dress like you used to...seriously.

  • It's only a matter of time when 80s fashions make a comeback! Thanks for watching.

  • WOW! were those *rubs eyes* PULL TABS!?!?!?!? As if the newspaper wasn't enough to date this vid...And did you notice the giant clunking desktop computer being advertised on the platform!? Wow, thanks for this stroll down memory lane, even though I was only a freshman in HS at the time...

  • You know, I hadn't paid attention to that PC ad. Nice catch!

  • Wow! You were Youtubing before there was a Youtube!

I spotted Santa strolling thru Ikebukuro Station last week

  • If only I could've predicted it...

    Boy, Santa's everywhere isn't he?!!

  • Wow this is awesome! 昭和の時代を感じますね。This film is definitely valuable! And it's deserving of extra credit that you keep this old film in good quality as well.

  • Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it!

  • Awesome. I was in Japan at that time too. It was a different world in many ways.

  • Yes, it was. And yet, many things in Japan haven't really changed at all.

  • Holy crap I was just in Ikebukuro station last week! XD Wow!!! I can't wait to watch all your other vids :D Cheers! ~misctube aka miscanime

  • Hey, thanks. Hopefully you'll enjoy the other too.

  • You guys were so cute! (You're still not so bad.) Thanks so much for such a fascinating video.

  • Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. More to come.

  • Once again, another great video. Can't wait to see pt. 2.

  • Thanks maverick. Give me some time to get part 2 up. It's hard for me to find time to edit these, although I enjoy doing it.

  • Wow, good and old ticket clippers. Did you notice some of them had as marvelous tricks with their scissors as fast shooter in the western movies.

  • Yes, I remember how some were very good and FAST. And you are right, some guys could twirl those clippers around like a 'six-shooter'!!

    Thanks for watching.

  • Another classic man ;)

    本当にありがとう先輩 ;)

  • Thanks Sam.

    How's life in the 'burbs?

  • Good, recently got a scooter and been exploring more and more of my city, really fcukin fun ;D

  • cool vid! I'm digging the Ray Bans! I miss my pair from the 80s. I graduated from HS in '87 and for graduation took a trip to England and had the BIG VHS camera - I need to look at that footage again. How did you get your 80s footage on your computer?

  • Jason, you need to find that tape and get it converted!

I had a friend convert it from VHS to DVD and he also gave it to me in a DV format which I loaded onto my computer. If you don't know anyone, there are still places here that'll convert vhs to dvd and you can transfer from dvd to your computer with some free online software. I would love to see the old video!

  • good work, you know Im lovin these retro vids. :)

  • Thanks Nozo!

    How's the family doing?

  • They are doing great. We've got a nice little routine going now so things are running (relatively) smoothly. :) How is your tribe doing?

  • Haha, the newspaper helped me place the time a bit, but then to see the ojisan clipping the tickets at the turnstyles.... HOLY CRAP! The mind boggles to think that this was how tickets were done for the whole yamanote line. Great vid, can't wait for more dude.

    Peace

  • Thank God for the electronic turnstyles. It really has speeded things up at the gates - another thing that has changed since then.

  • Whoah... back before automatic turnstiles. Trippy. Now it's all Suica(Toica in the Nagoya area) and Pasmo.

  • Can you imagine clipping tickets all day for a living?!

  • I can imagine it being more relaxing than a whole lot of other jobs out there. Wonder what all the old ticket clippers did after automatic turnstiles came into play?

  • WOW! Ikebukuro station back in the day. As that is my hood, that is a total trip for me. Love this series. The ticket machine /gates are the biggest difference. Some of the signage is different, but alot is the same. The news stand and the uniforms however havent changed a bit it seems. The headlines were really trippy for me as well. Awesome.

  • yeah, i spent a lot of time roaming around Ikebukuro because i was staying in Saitama back then and it was the terminus of the Tobu Tojo Line that I used. The Sunshine 60 building was a big deal back then.

  • I always love your background music! "Hey DJ" brought back some awesome memories. I must admit though that you don't look the type that would normally listen to that type of music. Shows how first impressions can be totally wrong. Thanks again for sharing! btw, LOL @ the 80's wear "Daisy Dukes!" You guys were stylin' and profilin' back in the day! :o) Take care!

  • Despite my 'whitebread' appearance, I went to a high school that was VERY diverse and therefore listened to everything from old school hip hop, to new wave, to hard rock. It was a great environment, and I still have very eclectic tastes because of it.

    Thanks for watching Jason.

  • I noticed that the news stand was selling copies of PlayBoy & Penthouse....LOL.

Also, since the video cameras where bigger back then, I'd assume the pedestrians around you would have really noticed that someone was filming.

I noticed that guy was punching everyone's tickets. Did someone also punch that same ticket again when exiting the station or was that handled by a machine with the flaps that opened when the train ticket was inserted?

    Thanks.

  • Hey Slick, yes our camera was BIG so there was no hiding the fact that we were filming!

And back then when you exited the station you left the ticket with the attendant, who then had to instantly recognize where you came from and whether you paid the proper fare (both written on the ticket)! Talk about a tough job!
