Despite the host, I am so moved to see these wonderful men and their wives. Such gentle legends. Their memory will never die and future generations will always love and revere them.
that is how Stan looked when I seen him. He said he didn't know but they had to tell Oliver because he had a bad heart. He lived in a apt by the Beach in Calif.
Wow, I didn't know there was any 'reality' footage of this pair. I just want to hug them - aren't they adorable! (Yes, that guy should shut the hell up!)
Edwards was deplorable. His continued jabbing and hardy's weight was one of the most obnoxious things I have ever seen. It was mean spirited and totally uncalled for. It wasn't funny. Edwards was way over his head. And it certainly showed. Hardy drew more laughs during the show than Edwards could ever hope to draw his entire life. What a sniveling little rat fink of a man Edwards was.
That host just sucked all the life out of everyone he was in the same room as. What a pity we'll look back on this and remember the boring overbearing host
The host missed his beach trip on D-Day. He appeares so slimish Stan & Ollie had to watch every of their steps. Man I feel such a shame by standing the hosts attitude...

@TheKenney81 By today's standards, yes. I like to think that unmeasured directness and insensitivity to other's feelings is something that has changed over time. The cultural revolution in the late-60s, 70s changed how we perceive others. Political correctness may be derided, but it exists because we acknowledge that people who talk like this host are gob shite indeed. So, yes, this guy is an asshat, but he's also a product of his time and the audience of the time loved him.
Didn't realize the Yanks had their own This Is Your Life. That presenter is almost as cocky & rude as a modern day one, mind you some of them were complete assholes then, witness Elvis on the The Steve Allen show.

Should have put up the entire show. Some of the editing of this is lousy. Hey let's cut to another scene right when we get to some real interesting info. Nice try, but it is wanting.
Flying Dueces is actually a (somewhat) full length film and not a short. They re-enacted scenes from Beau Hunks in the movie - including the original dance sequence cut from the short (where they are picking up garbage). I will double check in case I'm wrong but I am almost certain about this. I'm still looking online for either scenes or full episodes for you.
I really don't want to go against the grain of comments, but I have to say that Ralph Edwards was doing what he did best. And it may be annoying by today's standards but it was his claim to fame before inventing dozens of famous game shows. The fat jokes were nothing more than a response to Oliver's own doings as he played on his weight as the source of comedy. And I know it sounded rude and harmful but I can only imagine that Oliver was fine with it. Ollie was sick then and had heart trouble...
@rockaz45 Beau Hunks was the 1931 short and The Flying Dueces was the 1939 film. They actually joined the Foreign Legion because Ollie's girl broke his heart - and then come to find out that all the guys were in the Legion because their girl broke their hearts and it was the same girl.
@rockaz45 I have the DVDs so I never looked online for these but I'm sure you can purchase the DVD sets at Amazon - they are an excellently remastered box-sets now and I watch them over and over. It seems like I need a L&H fix every so often or I begin to miss them. And I used to be a Stooges fan until I learned that L&H INVENTED the Three Stooges comedy (as evident by the short, Busy Bodies). I will look online for sources and respond here for you if I find them.
@rockaz45 I'm sorry but I cannot find episodes online. I have them all in AVI format but Beau Hunks is 237 Mb (Flying Dueces has not been ripped to my computer). If you can find a simple way for me to post Beau Hunks to you or send them to you, I'll be glad to do so.
You shouldn't be complaining about the presenter, you should be complaining about Laurel & Hardy's idiotic friends who set this up, which effectively ruined any chances of a further television appearance by the two. The presenter was just doing his best to try and get them to cheer up a bit.
What a shame that almost all of the 600 posts so far are about the dopy host and not about "Laurel & Hardy". They were clearly annoyed and would have had every right to walk off the show. Even for that era, the host was a jerk and seems to want to be the center of attention.
@Superbruv07 wikipedia: "Some celebrities were unpleasantly surprised. ... and Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy was angered by being "tricked" into what would be the team's only American television appearance, on December 1, 1954. The meticulous Laurel later said, "[Oliver Hardy] and I were always planning to do something on TV. But we never dreamed that we would make our television debut on an unrehearsed network program...I was damned if I was going to put on a free show for them."
You kids talking down the presenter are showing your ignorance. He was Ralph Edwards, a brilliant entrepreneur. He CREATED the show! He was a major figure in early US television.
@sobars1 No, I think it's you that's showing yours. Outside of the US I put it that most people will never even have heard of Ralph Edwards. Whereas with L&H all you'd have to do is show a couple of empty bowler hats. As presenter and host, the least you'd expect from him is a degree of respect towards guests, especially a couple of legends like Laurel and Hardy. As it stands he comes across as a complete tw@t. No excuse.
THE TWO GREATEST COMEDIANS THAT EVER LIVED!!!! I HONOR THE MEMORIES OF SUCH WONDERFUL COMEDIANS AND PEOPLE! THERE WILL NEVER BE ANYONE THAT CAN MATCH THEIR TALENTS!
Presenter ? What presenter ? That motor mouth there is not worth a mote of dust under the shoes of the Gems of Comedy. This man should have learnt a bit about the great personalities he was going to interact with, this way it would have taught him how he is just a nobody compared to the Ever Green Kings of Comedy. I am sure he would have been tongue-in-check and sense-in-head. Bloody Raplh Edwards.
I saw this program when it was 1st aired so many yrs ago - These 2 wonderful men were unbeliiveabley famous. Till this day I love these exceptional stars. I wish all of their films could be brought back for all to enjoy as much as I have over the years. They were friends to the very end of there lives - I would encourage everyone to see the clips that are posted here. God bless them.
This announcer is a nobody who owes his very job to actors like these gentlemen. What a dusche-bag ordering ollie to sit down, then a minute later to stand up. Early on, all three, I mean two of you comfortable. Hope you ran here, can't fit in the car....on & on. Hardy should have slugged that moron.
Allowing for the fact that Edwards won't shut up, don't they come across as modest? It's a vast difference to the sensitive egos behind the ones that entertain us these days.
Ralph Edwards gave orders that if anyone tried to make him the subject of This Is Your Life, they would be fired.
He hosted the very first show in the UK, ironically the subject was Eamonn Andrews! Andrews hosted the show for many years and was again the subject in 1974!
@davenight Ralph Edwards was the producer/creator of This Is Your Life. I agree he is one of the most tiresome, nauseating presenters/hosts in the history of television. Many of the "surprised" stars in fact were visibly angry when they appeared on this show even though it was a staple of American television for a couple of decades. I wish someone could find the show when newscaster Lowell Thomas when "surprised" walked out and left Edwards to conduct the show about his life in absentia.
The presenter is a patronsing a**hole making jibes about Ollie's weight too - embarrassing! :( Stan looks lost - "Tell us why you didnt answer the register Sy=tan, did you skip school?" Oh shut up! The host is horrible.
what an absolute bastard this man is! Arguably the greatest and gentlest double act ever to grace the silver screen and this prat just ridicules and patronizes them.
I almost want to cry as Oliver had had a number of serious strokes at this time and was later said by Stan to be dying with terminal cancer :'( so he can barely speak- the last thing he would have needed is this fuck nut making cheap jibes about his weight.
this man's descendants should be ashame of this cunt of a man insulting and patronising the 2 funniest men to breath air! They are also most comedian's favourites too.
@2HonestIam I don't think that twat has any descendants, nature generally recognizes its mistakes and knows where to stop.
Incidentally, when I was a kid back in Scotland I saw Laurel and Hardy live in Glasgow's Empire Theater. They were old men by that time, but seeing those legends in the flesh was wonderful.
Stan Laurel spent a lot of time as a teenager in Scotland working with his uncle who was the stage manager of the Metropole Theatre, also in Glasgow.
While this program was popular, it was sometimes embarassing for those so honored. This was such an uncomfortable time. I remember watching it and feeling sad for the way Ralph Edwards talked to them. Hardy made it through but Stan Lauren just looked lost. So glad you have it on here though just to know so much about them. What a great duo and what joy they brought to all of us.
@invader5000 - Well, both L&H and the Stooges (who were still relative unknowns working for Ted Healy at the time) appeared in "Hollywood Party" for MGM in 1934. I don't believe they had any shared scenes in the film, but it's possible they encountered each other on set, or perhaps at a premiere or something.

I find Stan and Ollie just adorable.
Ralph Edwards on the other hand, quite annoying. He talks way too much!

@jtmichaelson thanks man,, where can i watch them online?? i tried youtube and couldnt find anything
rockaz45 1 year ago

You shouldn't be complaining about the presenter, you should be complaining about Laurel & Hardy's idiotic friends who set this up, which effectively ruined any chances of a further television appearance by the two. The presenter was just doing his best to try and get them to cheer up a bit.
baker92 1 year ago
What a shame that almost all of the 600 posts so far are about the dopy host and not about "Laurel & Hardy". They were clearly annoyed and would have had every right to walk off the show. Even for that era, the host was a jerk and seems to want to be the center of attention.

That presenter was an arsewhole! You carnt talk to two of the greatest comic's like that! Its just plane rude.

I heard Stan Laurel was furious about this show, as they were planning to do their TV debut in another kind of venue.
fumetti 1 year ago 2
@fumetti Really? Where did you hear this?
Superbruv07 1 year ago
@Superbruv07 wikipedia: "Some celebrities were unpleasantly surprised. ... and Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy was angered by being "tricked" into what would be the team's only American television appearance, on December 1, 1954. The meticulous Laurel later said, "[Oliver Hardy] and I were always planning to do something on TV. But we never dreamed that we would make our television debut on an unrehearsed network program...I was damned if I was going to put on a free show for them."
fumetti 1 year ago
@fumetti Why their only appearance? Doesn't sound too bad.
Superbruv07 1 year ago
@Superbruv07 I think television was a new medium and they did not want their TV debut to be in such an inconspicuous way.
fumetti 1 year ago
@fumetti True, but what better way of debuting on a new age of medium than a celebration of your lifetime genious?
Superbruv07 1 year ago
@Superbruv07 I would agree, and I am sure Laurel's disdain of this appearance was soon forgotten.

You kids talking down the presenter are showing your ignorance. He was Ralph Edwards, a brilliant entrepreneur. He CREATED the show! He was a major figure in early US television.

alritehamilton 1 year ago
@sobars1 No, I think it's you that's showing yours. Outside of the US I put it that most people will never even have heard of Ralph Edwards. Whereas with L&H all you'd have to do is show a couple of empty bowler hats. As presenter and host, the least you'd expect from him is a degree of respect towards guests, especially a couple of legends like Laurel and Hardy. As it stands he comes across as a complete tw@t. No excuse.

Hardy should have slugged that moron.
goodkarma33 1 year ago 15
Allowing for the fact that Edwards won't shut up, don't they come across as modest? It's a vast difference to the sensitive egos behind the ones that entertain us these days.
cbak12sg 1 year ago
Ralph Edwards gave orders that if anyone tried to make him the subject of This Is Your Life, they would be fired.
He hosted the very first show in the UK, ironically the subject was Eamonn Andrews! Andrews hosted the show for many years and was again the subject in 1974!

xMASSxDx187x 1 year ago
@davenight Ralph Edwards was the producer/creator of This Is Your Life. I agree he is one of the most tiresome, nauseating presenters/hosts in the history of television. Many of the "surprised" stars in fact were visibly angry when they appeared on this show even though it was a staple of American television for a couple of decades. I wish someone could find the show when newscaster Lowell Thomas when "surprised" walked out and left Edwards to conduct the show about his life in absentia.

@davenight I agree, fancy getting some twat to host these 2 greats. a re-fried dung beetle could have done better !

I think that Stan was very pissed off. He doesn't speak much on purpose, but was too professional to tell the presenter to go f..ck himself.

The presenter is a patronsing a**hole making jibes about Ollie's weight too - embarrassing! :( Stan looks lost - "Tell us why you didnt answer the register Sy=tan, did you skip school?" Oh shut up! The host is horrible.
grimTales1 1 year ago
what an absolute bastard this man is!
RIP Stan and babe- we will always love you :) xx

this man's descendants should be ashame of this cunt of a man insulting and patronising the 2 funniest men to breath air! They are also most comedian's favourites too.
2HonestIam 1 year ago
@2HonestIam I don't think that twat has any descendants, nature generally recognizes its mistakes and knows where to stop.
Incidentally, when I was a kid back in Scotland I saw Laurel and Hardy live in Glasgow's Empire Theater. They were old men by that time, but seeing those legends in the flesh was wonderful.
Stan Laurel spent a lot of time as a teenager in Scotland working with his uncle who was the stage manager of the Metropole Theatre, also in Glasgow.

Stan and Ollie - such a gracious pair!
Feel soo emotional seeing the host speak to them like they are nothing and making jibes about ollie's weight all the time. I would've slapped him!

helterskelter1 1 year ago
