  • Basically the anti-gay folks are down to three arguments:

    1. Marriage is between a man and woman, because I said so!

    2. If gays can marry, my power to discriminate against them will be diminished!

    3. Gays are intolerant for not tolerating intolerance!

    Today they say there's a storm coming. Tomorrow they'll probably say gay marriage causes global warming.

    It's scary to think that these folks have had almost total control of our government including our nuclear codes for so long!

  • Homosexuals are not asking for special treatment. To deny them any right that a heterosexual is welcome to is an act of discrimination, plain and simple. Marriage is a legal contract between two people, and is not owned by any religion. It is practiced in many cultures and many religions. Denying it to someone of a different sexual orientation is nothing less than unconstitutional.

  • Oh and traditional marriage, has changed for centuries. You could marry off 13 year old girls (more than one) to old men in ancient times. Many cultures have arranged marriages that have nothing to do with love.Infertile people, athiests etc. can still get married in America. And these people are neither religious nor in it to start a family.

    So legal marriage in the modern sense has nothing to do with religion or morality. It's a choice.

  • The correct headline should be: "Gay Activists Defend Liberty." Evidently you don't know the difference between democracy and liberty. The courts have declared marriage a right; rights are guaranteed, and neither are they arbitrary.

    Democracy = tyranny of the majority

    Liberty = the rights of individuals

    Most of the Founding Fathers disdained democracy because they knew what it always leads to. That is why we have a Bill of Rights.

  • dayraderaz, do you understand the importance of freedom, equality and justice in the USA? These are the core values by which our Country was founded, and the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution clearly states that no state "shall deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Prop 8 is fundamentally unconstitutional, and you should be upset about this passing like the rest of us.

  • The Courts are bound by the Constitution, not the will of the people. The will of the people has often been taken to court because they were perceived to be unconstitutional. It seems to me that you understand the nature of democracy, but have little concept of the nature of individual liberty.

Therefore, when referring to us "queers" please TRY to make your plural and singular nouns agree with their modifiers. Its were not 'was' and do not 'does'.   • Rachel we all know you are a lesbian and your are strongly advocating for the rights of your community, but be fair when telling the truth. Proposition 8 came about a long time ago when the voters of California turned down the idea of gay marriage. Some activist judges on the state level decided that they didnt care and turned down the will of the people. They legislated from the bench. So those rigths were temporary. The people got mad and call them out on it.A referendum was called and viola!

  • I think the protest should not only focus on prop 8 but the other propositions as well. Like the most despicable prop passed in Arkansas banning adoption for singles, unmarried, and gay couples.

    I also think if these religious morons hold dear the word marriage, it should be taken out of the secular government and replace it with civil unions with equal rights given to homosexuals and heterosexuals. From there, anyone religious or not, gay or str8 can freely label their union as marriages.

  • Also, minority civil rights should be protected from majority vote. U.S.A is moreof a Constitutional Republic than a democracy because if the majority were the rule of law then slavery could still exist if the majority were the rule of law.

  • taking rights away from a specific group of individuals, specifically a minority group losing rights, is not a voter choice. interracial marriage was not a voter choice. ending slavery was not a voter choice. giving women the right to vote was not a voter choice.   • Civil rights are too important to be left up to popular vote. Civil rights in this country have ALWAYS been decided in the court. DEMOCRACY also has to protect the minority from the majority so NO it's not great, Democracy didn't occur bigotry did.

  • I take it you didn't have YOUR rights voted away. No, it's not great that people had their rights voted away and protesting is also democracy.

  • First, I did say that I voted NO on this prop.

    Second, a gay or lesbian are not considered a "minority" in the eyes of the law. In the eyes of the law, being gay or lesbian is a lifestyle. A minority refers to ethnic backround.You have the right to protest anything you want, and yes that is democracy. But I still think this would have had an impact had it been done PRIOR to the election. Just because someone doesn't agree with you, does not make them a "bigot". Let the courts decide.

  • I don't care what the eyes of the law view gay and lesbians as--there was a time in the eyes of the law that blacks were considered to be not full human beings. And whether these protests would have had more effect prior to the election is pretty much a moot point, they actually seem to be having an effect now. I happen to think that the people who voted for this bigoted law acted in bigoted ways whether they consider themselves bigots or not. WE'RE TALKING CIVIL RIGHTS.

  • Hey bud, remember I voted NO on this prop also and am obviously not as one sided as you are. I don't agree with throwing the word "bigot" around as a lot of others are. Those that voted for this law merely have a differing opinion than you and I. That does not make them "bigots". I just look at the other side of the coin. I hope you get what you want.   • I don't think you can be too one sided when it comes to civil rights, and yes it does make people bigots when they view them as less than deserving of civil rights. You keep saying you voted no--thank you--but you didn't have your rights voted away so I don't think you understand the anger over this. No, it's not democracy at its finest, its democracy at its worst.

    That may be true, but it can't be denied that bigots are on the bandwagon. Those who voted yes may not all be bigots, but they are, without exception, prejudiced. Bigotry and prejudice are two different things, albeit most people use them interchangeably.

  • You're silly. If homosexuals are not a minority, then it must be that there are more homosexuals than heterosexuals, right? Some of us see through this chicanery of denying gays as a minority. It's a tactic used by bigots in an attempt to lessen the impact of gay civil rights.

    As for bigotry, it's not disagreement that makes people into bigots; it's HOW they disagree. As Justice Holmes said, "The bigot is like the pupil of an eye; the more light you shed on it, the more it contracts."
